Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 14, 2023

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 1-3 on Sunday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Jimmy Crooks, singled, doubled, drove in one and scored in Peoria’s win. Other standouts include Kramer Robertson, José Alvarez, Trent Baker and Kade Kretzschmar.

Memphis 1 at Durham 5

The Memphis Redbirds (17-21) fell to the Durham Bulls (TB, 22-16) at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Sunday night.

Michael McGreevy pitched five innings and yielded three runs on seven hits, one walk and three strikeouts. TCN’s no. 3 prospect took his fourth Triple-A loss.

The only Memphis run came in the fifth inning. Matt Koperniak walked and stole second and Kramer Robertson brought him home with a single to make the score 3-1.

Out of the bullpen, Dalton Roach was touched for two solo home runs in three innings. The 27-year-old struck out eight batters, however.

Robertson singled and doubled and drove in the lone run. Richie Palacios recorded a single and two walks. The lineup left eight runners on base.

Koperniak and Palacios both stole a bag. Palacios was also caught stealing.

After a 2-4 week against the Bulls, the Redbirds are seven games out of first place in the International League West.

Springfield 4, San Antonio 5

The Springfield Cardinals (20-19) were topped by the San Antonio Missions (SD, 19-20) on Sunday night at Hammons Field.

In his rehab assignment from St. Louis, Jake Woodford was the opener and he fared better than in first outing. The right-hander tossed two innings and was charged with one run on three hits and no walks. Woodford fanned three. In the third one-inning outing of his rehab stint, Ryan Helsley walked one and struck out one in a scoreless third inning.

The Cardinals took a 2-1 lead in the second inning as Jacob Buchberger blasted a two-run homer, his 15th of the season. In the fourth, Victor Scott grounded into a double play and one run came across. Breaking a tie game in the seventh, Chandler Redmond singled to make the score 4-3.

Regular starter Logan Gragg pitched the remaining six innings and gave up four runs with four hits and one walk. The 25-year-old struck out five and took his fifth loss. The Missions went ahead for good with two-run blast in the eighth inning.

José Alvarez recorded three hits. Thomas Saggese and Pedro Pagés had two apiece. Buchberger had the only extra-base hit. The lineup went 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base.

In the field, Buchberger committed his 12th error of the year at third base.

Springfield went 3-3 at home against San Antonio this week. They sit in first place in the Texas League North by half a game.

Peoria 4 at Beloit 3

The Peoria Chiefs (25-17) edged the Beloit Sky Carp (MIA, 20-22) at ABC Supply Stadium on Sunday.

Zane Mills surrendered three runs in five innings on five hits and one walk. The right-hander struck out three and earned his fifth win of the season.

In the third inning, Jimmy Crooks doubled to bring one run across and Brody Moore walked with the bases loaded. Alex Iadisernia singled to plate two and make the score 4-0.

After being scratched from his Saturday start, Trent Baker made his first relief appearance of the year with 3 1/3 scoreless frames. Andrew Marrero saved his 11th game of the year with a strikeout in 2/3 of an inning.

The lineup recorded six hits and seven walks. R.J. Yeager and Crooks both had two hits. Every starter was on base at least once except Jeremy Rivas.

Peoria stole four bags on Sunday. Yeager, Iadisernia, Moore and Nathan Church all took one. Iadisernia was also caught stealing. Crooks had a passed ball.

After a 4-2 week in Beloit, the Chiefs are one game back of the first-place Cedar Rapids Kernels in the Midwest League West.

Palm Beach 3 at St. Lucie 7

The Palm Beach Cardinals (19-21) were defeated by the St. Lucie Mets (NYM, 13-29) on Sunday afternoon at Clover Park.

In his first Single-A start, Chen-Wei Lin surrendered a run in two innings on three hits and three walks. The 21-year-old struck out four and took the loss. Augusto Calderon yielded four runs in 1 1/3 frames.

The Beach Birds got on the board in the sixth inning as Zach Levenson blasted a two-run home run, his fourth of the season. In the ninth, Trey Paige brought in a run via sacrifice fly.

Hunter Hayes gave up one run in 3 2/3 innings with three strikeouts. Tyler Bradt was touched for a run in the eighth inning.

Kade Kretzschmar went 3-for-4 with a walk and one run scored. Graysen Tarlow and Tre Richardson recorded two hits apiece. The lineup went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners on base.

Palm Beach was 4-2 at Port St. Lucie this week. They are tied with Jupiter for first place in the Florida State League East.

The Florida Complex League Cardinals (17-27) are eliminated from playoff contention in the FCL East.

In the DSL South, the Dominican Summer League Cardinals (14-32) are eliminated from playoff contention.
