The St. Louis Cardinals system was 1-0 on Monday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, DSL RF Brayan Amoroso, was on base six times, including via a double and home run, with three runs scored and four RBI. Also standing out: Daniel Rojas.

Memphis – off
Memphis (19-20) hosted Gwinnett (18-21) (ATL) last week, going 4-2 against the seventh-place Stripers. The Redbirds remain 7 ½ games behind first-place Columbus (CLE) in the International League West Division standings but have moved from eighth to a three-way tie for fourth with Toledo (DET) and Indianapolis (PIT).
The Triple-A team is on the road this week, facing East Division opponent Jacksonville (MIA).

Springfield – off
Springfield (23-16) managed just a split with South Division rival San Antonio (18-20) (SD) at home last week, their second consecutive series split. The first-place S-Cards’ lead in the Texas League North Division standings shrank from two-and-a-half to one game over Arkansas (SEA).
Up next for the S-Cards is a trip to take on Frisco (TEX) of the South Division.

Peoria – off
Peoria (21-21) split their six-game home series versus Cedar Rapids (21-21) (MIN) last week, keeping them tied for second place in the Midwest League West Division standings with the Kernels and Quad Cities (KC). All three teams trail first-place Wisconsin (MIL) by 4 ½ games in the standings.
The Chiefs head to Wisconsin next week for a six-game road set.

Palm Beach – off
Palm Beach (29-11) had an excellent road series at Dunedin (19-21) last week, claiming five of six contests. The first-place Beach Birds opened the gap to second-place Daytona (CIN) from five to six-and-a-half games in the Florida State League East Division standings.
The Beach Birds are at home this week, hosting roommate and third-place Jupiter (MIA), a team they lead by nine games.

DSL Cardinals 9 vs. DSL Tigers 1 6 (7 innings)
Brayan Amoroso’s big day at the plate led the DSL Cardinals (25-22) over the DSL Tigers 1 (27-22), 9-6, in seven home innings.
Amoroso accounted for six tallies, reaching base every time he came to the plate. The rookie right fielder went 2-for-2 with four walks, a double and home run that was part of his three runs scored and four RBI. Amoroso, batting fifth, has hit safely in four of his last five games.
The Venezuelan, who turned 17 in early July, launched his long ball with catcher Rainiel Rodriguez (walk) and center fielder Facundo Velasquez (double) aboard in the first, giving his team a 3-1 lead. Rodriguez’ base-on-balls was one of three for him on the day and one of 11 free passes issued by Tigers 1 pitchers.
The Dominican Birds added a run in the third via a bases-loaded sac fly by second baseman Cristofer Lebron. The score was unearned due to a throwing error by the Tigers 1’s starter that allowed designated hitter Juan Pablo Cabrera to reach first and jammed the sacks full.
The squad greeted the new Tigers 1’s pitcher with two more tallies in the bottom of the fourth, extending their lead to 6-1. Rodriguez and left fielder Andru Arthur both worked a free pass with one away and advanced a base on a balk. Both runners touched home plate, Rodriguez on a fielding error and Arthur via Amoroso’s double.
With ace Keiverson Ramirez on the mound and a five-run lead, it appeared the win was a foregone conclusion. But Ramirez did not pitch to his usual standard on Monday, allowing base runners in the first three frames and not retiring a batter in the fifth. The right-hander loaded the bases on a single and two walks before giving way to reliever Giovanni Vargas.
Vargas recorded four outs but not before allowing all three of Ramirez’ runners to score on a double and walk, giving Ramirez a final line of four runs allowed on four hits and four walks in four-plus frames. Vargas got the hook after sandwiching two walks around a strikeout in the sixth.
Enter Jose Suriel (W, 2-1) (BS,1). A passed ball charged to Rodriguez put two runners in scoring position. The lead runner scored on a sac fly but Suriel poured gas on the proverbial fire by hitting a batter then issuing two free passes. The latter walk forced Vargas’ final base runner across home plate, knotting the game at six all. Suriel ended the threat with a swinging K.
The game was 6-6 going into the home sixth when the offense got back to work. The fourth Tigers 1 pitcher immediately walked Velasquez and Amoroso. The runners advanced when the reliever threw one away on an attempted pick off move. Cabrera singled up the middle with one away, knocking in Velasquez. Another free pass, this one issued to Lebron, brought the fifth Tigers 1 hurler into the game.
Daniel Rojas greeted hurler #5 with a double to left, bringing in Amoroso and Cabrera. The score was 9-6 but the excitement was not over. Suriel got the first two seventh-inning outs but was replaced after issuing a walk. Lefty Bernard Mack walked his initial batter but induced a 5-3 ground out, ending the threat and recording his third save.
Tuesday’s game: at second place (tie) DSL Angels (34-17), 11:00 am ET/10:00 am CT, Andrew Bolivar (0-0, 4.11)
