Cardinals Minor League Notebook – April 28, 2025

The St. Louis Cardinals minor league system was 1-3 on Sunday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Springfield shortstop Jeremy Rivas, was 3-for-5, including a double, a home run, three runs scored, and four RBI. Other standouts include Miguel Ugueto, Leonel Sequera, Darlin Saladin and Ramon Mendoza.

Memphis Redbirds 4 at Norfolk Tides 6

The Triple-A Memphis Redbirds lost a close Sunday series finale to the Tides in Norfolk.

Michael McGreevy started for Memphis. The right-hander pitched 3 ⅔ innings and allowed three runs on four hits, three walks, and four strikeouts.

Michael Gomez tossed 1 ⅓ innings of scoreless ball in relief of McGreevy. The 28-year-old has thrown 10 ⅔ consecutive scoreless innings across his first seven appearances as a member of the Redbirds. Nick Anderson yielded two runs following Gomez and was charged with a blown save and the loss. Roddery Muñoz allowed one Norfolk insurance run in the eighth inning.

The Redbirds were down 3-0 early but plated a run to narrow the gap in the top of the fifth inning. Matt Lloyd led off the frame with a walk, and moved to second base on a Brody Moore single. Bryan Torres advanced Moore and Lloyd on a sacrifice bunt. Lloyd crossed home plate on a Mike Antico groundout.

Memphis took the lead with three runs in the sixth inning. Jose Barrero and Jimmy Crooks began the frame via back-to-back singles. César Prieto lined a single to right field to score Barrero and trim the deficit to one run.

Matt Lloyd singled in Crooks for the second consecutive RBI single of the inning to tie the game at three.

Moore walked to load the bases. Antico drew a two-out bases-loaded walk to give Memphis a 4-3 lead.

Norfolk scored one in the seventh and two in the eighth to take a 6-4 lead. Memphis failed to answer.

The Redbirds scored four runs on eight hits. Lloyd was 1-for-3, plus two walks, one run scored, and one RBI. Antico tallied a walk and two RBI. Every hitter in the lineup except for Antico tallied a hit. Michael Siani recorded the lone extra-base hit for the Redbirds, a double.

On the bases, Torres was caught stealing and picked off at first base.

Defensively, catcher Crooks recorded a passed ball.

Memphis is 15-10 for the season after taking five out of six at Norfolk. They lead the International League West Division by a half-game.

The Redbirds will head home to begin a six-game set with the Louisville Bats starting Tuesday.

Tuesday’s game: vs. Louisville (CIN), LHP Alex Cornwell (1-1, 10.24) vs. RHP Chase Petty (0-2, 3.52) 6:45 PM CT.

Springfield Cardinals 12 at Wichita Wind Surge 4

The Double-A Springfield Cardinals crushed the Wichita Wind Surge in the road series finale on Sunday.

Brycen Mautz made his fourth start for Springfield. The left-hander threw three innings and allowed three runs on four hits, three walks, and three strikeouts.

Right-hander Andrew Marrero surrendered one run and fanned four over two innings in relief of Mautz. Jack Ralston followed with two scoreless frames. Nick Raquet struck out four across two scoreless innings to finish the game. Marrero earned his first win of 2025.

The Cardinals’ offense was hot early, plating three runs in the top of the first inning. Noah Mendlinger singled and stole second base with two out. R.J. Yeager walked to bring up Jeremy Rivas, who cashed in with a three-run blast, his fourth home run of 2025.

Wichita tied the game at three in the third inning but Springfield quickly regained the lead. Ramon Mendoza and Miguel Ugueto hit back-to-back singles to begin the fourth inning. Carlos Linarez lined the third straight single of the frame to score Mendoza. Ugueto crossed home plate on a Darlin Moquete sacrifice fly to give the Cardinals a 5-3 lead.

The Wind Surge made it a one-run game heading into the sixth inning. Springfield extended the lead with a pair of runs. Mendoza led off the top of the sixth with a blast for his second home run of the season.

Ugueto reached second base via a fielding error. Following a Moquete strikeout, Ugueto stole third and scored on a throwing error to extend the Cardinals’ lead to 7-4.

The red-hot Springfield bats padded their lead with four more runs in the seventh inning. Yeager hit a one-out double, and advanced to third base on a passed ball. Rivas doubled to bring in Yeager. Mendoza followed with a single to score Rivas. Ugueto broke the game open with his first career Double-A home run, with Mendoza also scoring on the blast.

Springfield plated another run in the top of the ninth inning. Rivas singled to start the frame and moved to second base via a wild pitch. Linarez hit a two-out single to score Rivas for a 12-4 Cardinal lead.

Springfield scored double-digit runs for the fifth time this season in the victory. The Cardinals scored their 12 runs on 13 hits. Rivas was 3-for-5, including a double, a three-run home run, three runs scored, and four RBI. Mendoza went 3-for-5, including a home run, three runs scored, and two RBI. Ugueto was 3-for-5, including a two-run home run, three runs scored, and three RBI. Linarez singled twice and drove in two runs. Yeager doubled, scored twice, and drew a walk.

In his first action since April 18, top prospect JJ Wetherholt took a walk in five plate appearances from the designated hitter spot.

On the basepaths, Mendlinger stole his second base of 2025. Moquete swiped his fifth bag. Ugueto snagged his second base.

Defensively, Moquete nailed a runner at third base from left field. The Cardinals’ infield turned three double plays in the game.

Springfield is 10-11 on the season. They will head home to Hammons Field to begin a six-game series with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, starting Tuesday.

Tuesday’s game: vs. NW Arkansas (KC). LHP Ixan Henderson (2-0, 1.76) vs. TBA. First pitch is scheduled for 11:15 AM CT.

Peoria Chiefs 1 at Quad Cities River Bandits 2

The High-A Peoria Chiefs fell to the Quad Cities River Bandits in the series finale on Sunday.

Darlin Saladin started for the Chiefs. The right-hander pitched four scoreless innings and allowed one run on four hits, two walks, and a season-high six strikeouts.

Hunter Hayes fanned four across two scoreless innings in relief of Saladin. In the seventh, Tanner Jacobson allowed his first earned run this season following Hayes. Jawilme Ramirez fired a scoreless eighth frame with a strikeout. Jacobson took the loss.

The River Bandits struck first with a run in the third inning. Peoria tied the game in the sixth inning. Trey Paige doubled and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Paige came in to score on a Ryan Campos single.

The River Bandits retook the lead in the seventh inning. The Chiefs failed to answer in the one-run loss.

Peoria scored one run on three hits. Campos was 2-for-4, with one RBI. Paige tallied the Chiefs’ only extra-base hit, a double. Tre Richardson, Joshua Baez, Zach Levenson, and Bryce Madron each drew a walk.

On the bases, Richardson was caught stealing second base. Madron was picked off at second.

Defensively, right fielder Won-Bin Cho made a fielding error. Cho also threw a runner out at home.

Peoria is 6-14 on the season. They will head to Dozer Park to begin a six-game home set with the Beloit Sky Carp, starting Tuesday.

Tuesday’s game: vs. Beloit (MIA). RHP Gerardo Salas (0-2, 7.36) vs. TBA. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 AM CT.

Palm Beach Cardinals 2 at Jupiter Hammerheads 3

The Low-A Palm Beach Cardinals lost a close series finale to the Jupiter Hammerheads on Sunday but still took four of six games in the set.

Leonel Sequera made his fifth start for Palm Beach. The right-hander pitched five innings and allowed one run on three hits, one walk, and three strikeouts. Sequera took the hard luck loss.

Angel Cuenca surrendered two runs across two innings in relief of Sequera. Christian Worley struck out a pair of Hammerheads in a scoreless eighth frame.

The Hammerheads held a 3-0 lead and a no-hitter heading into the ninth inning before Palm Beach finally broke through. Jonathan Mejia walked before Travis Honeyman lined a single for the Cardinals’ first hit. Cade McGee walked to load the bases with no outs. Josh Kross scored Mejia on a bases-loaded walk. Christian Martin brought Honeyman home on a sacrifice fly. Palm Beach was unable to respond further in the one-run loss.

The Cardinals scored two runs on the one hit. Honeyman singled and scored a run. McGee and Kross each walked twice. Martin and Kross tallied one RBI apiece. Kross leads the team with 25 RBI.

The Palm Beach defense did not commit any errors.

The Cardinals are 13-8 on the season. They begin their next home series on Tuesday with the St. Lucie Mets.
