Cardinals Minor League Notebook – April 27, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 2-3 on Friday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Palm Beach’s Quinn Mathews, pitched a gem of six scoreless innings on three hits with 13 strikeouts. Other standouts include Sem Robberse, Nick Dunn, R.J. Yeager, Leonardo Bernal and Trey Paige.

Memphis 4, Jacksonville 3

The Memphis Redbirds edged the Jumbo Shrimp by a 4-3 score at AutoZone Park on Friday, breaking a three-game losing skid.

Starter Sem Robberse pitched seven innings, gave up two runs on six hits and struck out six. Through five starts, the 22-year-old right-hander has a 1.82 ERA.

Connor Thomas relieved Robberse and surrendered one run in the eighth. Ryan Loutos tossed a scoreless ninth and earned the win, his first of the season.

Memphis took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Jared Young singled and later scored on a single by Thomas Saggese. Jacksonville tied it in the top of the fourth.

The Redbirds broke the tie in the home half of the fourth to lead 2-1. Alfonso Rivas doubled and scored on a single by Matt Koperniak. Memphis made it 3-1 in the fifth. César Prieto singled. Luken Baker singled. Prieto came home on a single by Jeremy Rivas.

The Jumbo Shrimp came back with single runs in the seventh and eighth to tie the game. Memphis ended the game in the bottom of the ninth on a solo home run by Nick Dunn.

The Redbirds scored four runs on 12 hits. Rivas and Dunn were each 2-for-4 with an RBI. Prieto was 2-for-4. Young was 3-for-4.

On the base paths, Young stole his fourth base of the season. Koperniak was caught stealing.

Memphis is 11-13 on the season.

Saturday’s game:  vs. Jacksonville, RHP Andre Pallante (2024 Memphis debut) vs. RHP Max Meyer 3:05 CT. 

Springfield 5, Arkansas 8 (Game 1)

In the completion of Thursday’s suspended game at Hammons Field, the Springfield Cardinals fell to the Travelers by an 8-5 score.

Prior to play being stopped, starter Tekoah Roby pitched four innings, gave up two runs on four hits and struck out eight.

Edwin Nuñez relieved Roby and surrendered three runs in 2 1/3 innings. Ryan Shreve threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Matt Svanson yielded three unearned runs in the ninth to take the loss.

Arkansas scored twice in the top of the second inning to take the early lead. Springfield tied the game in the home second. Matt Lloyd doubled and Aaron McKeithan singled. Lloyd came home on a ground out by Jacob Buchberger. Jeremy Rivas plated McKeithan on a single.

The Cardinals pulled ahead again in the third on a two-run home run by R.J. Yeager. Springfield made it 5-2 in the fifth. McKeithan singled and later scored on a single by Chandler Redmond.

The Travelers tied the game with three in the sixth. In the ninth, Arkansas scored three more runs to lead 8-5. The Cardinals could not answer.

Springfield scored five runs on nine hits. McKeithan was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Yeager had two RBI.

On the base paths, Rivas and Bryan Torres each stole a base. In the field, Buchberger made a fielding error. McKeithan had a passed ball.

Springfield 1, Arkansas 3 (seven innings, Game 2)

The Cardinals fell to the Travelers in the second game of the twin bill at Hammons Field on Friday. In his first start of 2024, Trent Baker pitched 4 1/3 innings, gave up three runs on four hits, struck out three and walked three. Baker took the loss.

Leonardo Taveras threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Andre Granillo tossed a scoreless seventh.

Arkansas went up 2-0 in the second inning. The Travelers added a third run in the third. Springfield scored their only run in the sixth. Bryan Torres doubled and came home on a double by Nathan Church.

Torres was 2-for-3 as the only Cardinal with multiple hits. The offense was 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position and left two men on base.

Springfield is 14-5 on the season.

Saturday’s game:  vs. Arkansas, Max Rajcic RHP (2-1, 7.11) vs. Raul Alcantara LHP (2-0, 2.03) 6:05 CT.

Peoria 4, Wisconsin 9

The Peoria Chiefs fell to the Timber Rattlers by a 9-4 score at Dozer Park on Friday. Starter Hancel Rincon pitched five innings, gave up six runs on nine hits and struck out one. Rincon took the loss.

Benito Garcia relieved Rincon and surrendered one unearned run in the sixth. After a one-hour rain delay, Dionys Rodriguez yielded two runs, one earned, in the final three innings.

Wisconsin went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Peoria went up in the home half on a two-run home run by Leonardo Bernal.

The Timber Rattlers retook the lead in the second at 3-2. They added one run in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the top of the eighth to widen the lead to 8-2.

The Chiefs cut the lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run home run by Dakota Harris, his second in two nights. Wisconsin added one more run in the ninth to win 9-4.

The Chiefs scored four runs on seven hits. Moquete was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Harris and Bernal each had two RBI.

On the base paths, Joshua Baez stole his third base of the season. In the field, Harris made a throwing error and Osvaldo Tovalin had a fielding miscue.

Peoria has lost three in a row at home to Wisconsin and is 7-12 on the season.

Saturday’s game:  vs. Wisconsin, Pete Hansen LHP (0-2, 7.24) vs. Alexander Cornielle RHP (1-1, 7.11) 7:05 CT.

Palm Beach 5 at Fort Myers 3

The Palm Beach Cardinals edged the Mighty Mussels by two runs on Friday.

Starter Quinn Mathews pitched six scoreless innings, allowed three hits and struck out 13 to earn his second win of the season and his career. Through four professional starts, the lefty has a minuscule 0.50 ERA.

Angel Cuenca relieved Mathews and surrendered one run in 1 1/3 innings. Gustavo Rodriguez yielded two runs in the final 1 2/3 innings but still received his second save.

The Beach Birds took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Trey Paige and Miguel Villarroel singled. Jose Cordoba reached on an error and Paige scored. Villarroel came home on a sac fly by Kade Kretzschmar.

Palm Beach added two in the sixth to lead 4-0. Kretzschmar walked. Chase Davis reached on an error. Kretzschmar and Davis scored on a single by Paige.

Fort Myers finally got on the board with one run in the eighth. The Cardinals added a fifth run in the top of the ninth. Paige singled, stole second base and scored on a single by Cordoba.

The Mighty Mussels cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth.

Palm Beach scored five runs on 10 hits. Paige was 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Cordoba was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Villarroel was 2-for-5.

Cordoba and Paige each stole a base.

Palm Beach is 13-6 on the season.

Saturday’s game:  at Fort Myers, RHP José Dávila (1-0, 0.00) vs. Paulshawn Pasqualotto RHP (0-1, 2.57) 5:05 CT.
