In the only game on Sunday’s very light holiday schedule across the St. Louis Cardinals system, Memphis came out on top behind Player of the Day Jake Woodford’s strong mound effort and Edmundo Sosa’s timely hitting.
Results from games played Sunday, April 21st.

Memphis 5 vs. Round Rock 3 (10)
Edmundo Sosa’s home run handed the Redbirds a 6-5 walk-off victory over the Express in 10 innings. Memphis (9-8) holds a two-games-to-one series lead with one remaining. The Redbirds are tied for second with Omaha (KC), two games behind Iowa (CHC).
Sosa’s second long ball of 2019 came with Max Schrock aboard after the latter began the frame at second and was his second hit in four at bats to go with three RBI. The only other Memphis player with more than one of the team’s six hits was Andrew Knizner, who also went 2-for-4. The catcher touched home once and knocked in one.
Sosa’s bomb made a winner out of Jesus Cruz (W, 1-0) who faced the minimum in the top of the 10th. The Mexico native recorded a pop out and caught looking K before taking a comebacker off his back. But Cruz recovered in time to record the out.

Player of the Day Jake Woodford tossed a gem during his seven innings on the bump, holding the Southern Division’s top team to just one run on three hits and three walks. The solo tally charged to the righty resulted from a solo shot. Woodford fanned four with two ground- to nine fly- ball outs.
But the 3-1 lead he handed over to the bullpen did not survive the next frame. Chris Ellis (BS, 1) served up a solo bomb of his own, one of three hits and two runs given up in just 2/3 of an inning.
Hunter Cervenka retired his only batter on a pop up in foul ground, stranding the potential go ahead run at second. Luke Gregerson worked around a lead-off single for a clean ninth, his eighth appearance during his current rehab stint, and he has not been scored upon since his initial outing on April 4th.
