Cardinals Minor League Notebook – April 14, 2023

On Thursday, the St. Louis Cardinals system went 4-0, all on the road. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Michael McGreevy, threw 7 2/3 innings and yielded only one run on 84 pitches. Other standouts include Dakota Hudson, Victor Scott and Edwin Nunez.

Memphis 3 at Gwinnett 0

The Memphis Redbirds (7-5) defeated the Gwinnett Stripers (ATL, 2-9) on Thursday night at Coolray Field.

Starter Dakota Hudson pitched six scoreless innings with eight hits given up. The right-hander fanned seven and earned his first 2023 win.

The Redbirds struck in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Masyn Winn doubled and Paul DeJong drove him in in his continuing rehab assignment.

Kyle Leahy and JoJo Romero were lights out from the bullpen. Leahy pitched two innings with two strikeouts. Romero earned the save in the ninth with two strikeouts.

Memphis added two insurance runs in the eighth. Juniel Querecuto doubled to score DeJong and Oscar Mercado to increase the lead to 3-0.

Batting second, second baseman Winn had two of the six Redbirds hits. Cleanup hitter DeJong recorded a hit, one walk, an RBI and a run scored as shortstop. Justin Toerner walked three times. The lineup left 10 runners on base but the pitching blanked the Stripers.

Toerner stole his first Triple-A bag of the year and Winn took his fifth.

Mercado recorded an outfield assist in center field.

Friday’s game: at Gwinnett, LHP Connor Thomas (0-1, 12.27) vs. LHP Jared Shuster (0-1, 8.31 in MLB) 6:05 CT

Springfield 7 at Arkansas 4

The Springfield Cardinals (2-4) topped the Arkansas Travelers (SEA, 5-1) at Dickey-Stephens Park on Thursday.

Michael McGreevy earned the win after he tossed 7 2/3 innings with only one run surrendered on four hits. TCN’s no. 5 prospect has only given up one earned run in 11 2/3 innings for a 0.77 ERA this season.

The Cardinals scored first after Jacob Buchberger plated one in the third. In the sixth inning, Matt Koperniak recorded an RBI single and Chandler Redmond blasted a two-run homer, his third of the season. Buchberger hit a solo homer in the eighth and Lars Nootbaar drove in a run in the first game of his St. Louis rehab assignment.

The Travelers mounted a rally with four runs in the eighth inning. Andre Granillo yielded three runs on two hits, a walk and three strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings.

Springfield added an insurance run in the ninth after Arquimedes Gamboa scored Jose Alvarez via a single.

Redmond and Buchberger each singled and homered. Gamboa, Pedro Pagés and Mike Antico doubled. At DH, Nootbaar went 0-for-5 with an RBI groundout. The lineup went 4-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Alvarez had an outfield assist from right field.

Friday’s game: at Arkansas, RHP Connor Lunn (0-1, 4.50) vs. RHP Emerson Hancock (1-0, 0.00) 7:05 CT

Peoria 4 at Wisconsin 3

The Peoria Chiefs (2-4) edged the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (MIL, 2-4) on Thursday at Fox Cities Stadium.

Starter Tink Hence threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings and yielded four hits, a walk and two strikeouts. However, he suffered an injury and was removed after making an awkward wild pitch for his 69th offering of the evening. TCN’s no. 3 prospect is scoreless through 7 2/3 innings in High-A this season, but we will have to monitor his health status.

In the second, Noah Mendlinger tripled to score a run. Victor Scott II doubled to plate Mendlinger and make the score 2-0. Scott added another run in the fourth via a sacrifice fly.

Alex Cornwell stepped in for Hence and tossed 4 1/3 innings of relief. He yielded two runs, one earned, on two hits, a walk and six strikeouts. The left-hander earned his first High-A win. Matt Hickey surrendered a run in the ninth but earned his first career save.

The Chiefs added an important insurance run after Scott drove in his third run of the game with a single.

Scott, Osvaldo Tovalin and Luis Rodriguez all recorded two hits. Scott, TCN’s no. 29 prospect, is slashing .483/.545/1.028 so far this season. The Chiefs lineup had seven hits, six walks and left 10 runners on base.

Scott went 3-for-4 in stolen base attempts to add to his team-leading seven stolen bags. Mendlinger also took a base.

Friday’s game: at Wisconsin, LHP Cooper Hjerpe (0-0, 8.10) vs. RHP Cameron Wagoner (0-1, 4.50) 6:40 CT

Palm Beach 6 at Daytona 4

The Palm Beach Cardinals (2-4) beat the Daytona Tortugas (CIN, 5-1) at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Thursday.

Starter Brycen Mautz pitched four innings and was charged with two runs on four hits, one walk and a strikeout. TCN’s no. 13 prospect has a 3.00 ERA in his first two professional starts.

The Beach Birds scored first after Tre Fletcher brought in a run via sacrifice fly in the second inning. The Tortugas responded with two runs in the third.

Edwin Nuñez

Edwin Nuñez tossed three perfect innings with four strikeouts. The right-hander threw 20 out of 33 pitches for strikes and earned his first 2023 win.

In the seventh, Lizandro Espinoza drove in a run. Chris Rotondo came across and Carlos Linarez plated two with a single in the eighth. Fletcher came home after a passed ball to make the score 6-2.

Gustavo Rodriguez pitched the final two innings and surrendered two runs on four hits and four strikeouts.

Won-Bin Cho

The Cardinals had five hits and six walks. TCN’s no. 21 prospect, Won-Bin Cho, walked three times and came across twice. The lineup went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position but still scored six runs.

Alex ladisernia and Linarez both took a bag. Cho stole two.
