Results from games played Friday, June 30th.
The Redbirds got their homestand off on the right foot, scoring four in the first inning on the way to a Friday night win. The big blow was Harrison Bader’s two-run triple.
To put a cherry on top, in the eighth, red-hot Patrick Wisdom hit his third long ball in the last two days and 16th of the season. The third baseman finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, and a stolen base but also committed an error, his 13th. Carson Kelly (two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI) and Rangel Rovelo (two singles and a run scored) also got into the act.
Starter Josh Zeid went four innings, with New Orleans’ lone run scoring in the top of the first. Kevin Herget performed well in long relief, going three scoreless innings on two hits. He fanned four and picked up the win. Ryan Sherriff handled a clean ninth.
Saturday’s game: vs. New Orleans (MIA), 6:35 pm CT, Zac Gallen (0-1, 5.40)
The Cards came back from a rough Thursday night when the bullpen coughed up a four-run lead to pull away at Midland for an 8-2 Friday win.
Springfield scored in six of the nine innings, opening with a run in the second and two more in the third, the latter due to Texas League all-star outfielder Anthony Garcia’s 10th home run. The outfielder drove in three on the night. Jacob Wilson and newcomer John Nogowski doubled twice, with the former plating two and the latter scoring twice.
Matt Pearce delivered a quality start, allowing two runs on nine hits and no walks over six innings for the win. Pedro Echemendia (two innings) and Corey Baker (one) finished the job.
Saturday’s game: at Midland (OAK), 7:05 pm CT, Dakota Hudson (6-3, 2.66)
Palm Beach at Charlotte (rain)
The Beach Birds’ opener at Charlotte was postponed due to rain with the two clubs playing a Saturday double-header, weather permitting.
Saturday’s games: at fourth-place Charlotte (TB), 4:00 pm ET, Jake Woodford (5-3, 2.89)/Derian Gonzalez (3-7, 4.46)
The Chiefs edged Kane County on Friday due to excellent pitching by starter Mike O’Reilly. The right-hander threw eight scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while fanning nine and walking none. O’Reilly earned his sixth win of the season. Eric Carter added a scoreless ninth to earn his seventh save of the season.
The lone run came in the seventh inning. Brian O’Keefe doubled, then stole third base and scored on a wild pitch. The offense managed only three hits for the evening, oddly all were doubles, with others by Stefan Trosclair and Danny Hudzina.
Trosclair and O’Keefe each stole a base. Trosclair swiped second and third for his 9th and 10th stolen bases of the season in 12 attempts. O’Keefe stole his fifth base in as many tries.
Hudzina made a fielding error, his sixth error of the season.
The Chiefs are 36-42 overall and 6-3 in the second half to put them tied for first place in the Midwest League West for the second half.
Saturday’s game: at Kane County, Ian Oxnevad (2-7, 3.93) 6:30 CT
The Spikes squeaked past the Doubledays on Friday night. After falling behind, the Spikes took the lead with a four-run sixth inning. Auburn responded by tying the score in the top of the sixth. State College roared back with three more in the bottom frame to take the lead back. The Doubledays rallied with two runs in the eighth but fell short.
The Spikes’ offense scored seven runs on eight hits. Evan Mendoza hit a solo home run in the sixth inning and was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Tyler Lancaster plated two on a sixth inning single. Erik Garcia followed with an RBI single to score another run. Two runs came home in the seventh on an Auburn throwing error.
Starter Sam Tewes pitched six innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on 13 hits. Tewes fanned six and walked one. Steven Farinaro followed, surrendering two runs, one earned, on three hits in 1 2/3 innings, for both a blown save and the win. Colton Thomson got the last out of the eighth inning in relief of Farinaro. Noel Gonzalez pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save.
The Spikes are 7-4 and tied for first place in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division.
Saturday’s game: vs. Batavia, Daniel Castano (2-0, 1.93) 6:05 CT.
The Cardinals defeated the Astros on Friday night with the help of two three-run innings.
The first inning began with two consecutive hit by pitches of Chase Pinder and J.D Murders, followed by walks by Brady Whalen and Julio Rodriguez. Pinder scored on the Rodriguez walk. Jonathan Rivera hit a sac fly to score Murders. Luis Bandes singled to score Whalen. In the seventh, a double by Rivera and a singles from Bandes and Irving Wilson plated three. Carlos Talavera hit an RBI single in the sixth. Bandes and Talavera were both 2-for-4.
Cardinals starter Alvaro Seijas pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on five hits while fanning six and walking one. Seijas earned his first win of the season. Fabian Blanco followed with 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits. Evan Guillory pitched a scoreless ninth.
The Cardinals are 6-3 and are tied for first place in the Appalachian League West.
Saturday’s game: vs. Pulaski, Johan Oveido (1-0, 0.00) 6:00 CT.
GCL Cardinals 2 at GCL Marlins 8
The Cardinals fell behind early and failed to catch up, going down in defeat to the Marlins on Friday. The Cards were held scoreless until the seventh, when they managed to send two runs home, on a sac fly by Luis Flores, and an RBI triple by Andrew Brodbeck, but it was not enough. Brodbeck was 2-for-4 on the day.
The rehabbing Brodbeck (from Palm Beach) committed a fielding error. Newly-drafted center fielder Terry Fuller stole the first base of his career in his first attempt. Fuller also had an outfield assist at home plate
Injured and rehabbing St. Louis reliever Zach Duke pitched the first inning, a scoreless frame with one hit and one strikeout. Following Duke was regular starter Brian Pirela, who pitched four innings and gave up two runs on three hits. Pirela took the loss. Enrique Perez took the sixth and surrendered two additional runs. Chris Hunt added a scoreless seventh. Kevin Hamann started the eighth and relinquished four runs, three earned on three hits while only recording one out. Patrick Dayton relieved Hamann and got the final two outs.
Saturday’s game: at Astros, Winston Nicacio 10:30 am ET
DSL Cardinals 5, DSL Phillies Red 3
The Cardinals defeated the Phillies Red on Friday taking the early lead with a four run first inning. It began with two walks and a stolen base, followed by an RBI double by Ivan Herrera that plated one. Freddy De Jesus doubled next to score two. De Jesus later scored the fourth run on a throwing error. A fifth run came home in the fourth inning on a William Jimenez triple followed by a Franklin Soto single. Jimenez was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Soto was also 3-for-4, as was De Jesus.
Francis Ventura was the starter and the winning pitcher. Ventura threw five innings, giving up one run on two hits. Anthony Trompiz surrendered two runs in 1 2/3 frames. Christoffer Zapata and Dionis Zamora combined for the final 2 1/3 scoreless innings with Zamora earning his third save.
