With Major League active rosters expanding from 26 to 28 players on Wednesday, September 1, the St. Louis Cardinals are expected to promote right-handed pitcher Brandon Dickson and catcher Ali Sanchez.
Sanchez, 24, a former Mets prospect who was acquired for cash in March, has been on the 40-man roster and appeared with St. Louis earlier this season.
His inclusion among available players during the final month means reserve catcher Andrew Knizner can be used more frequently without concern of having no backup on the bench. With the Redbirds, Sanchez slashed .268/.313/.366/.679 in 240 plate appearances over 62 games.
Dickson, 36, will find his way back onto the roster after nine years, most of which was spent in Japan. The right-hander was re-signed this year and stepped into a Team USA assignment for the Olympics when teammate Matthew Liberatore bowed out. In 11 appearances with Memphis this season, Dickson has a 9.58 ERA.
His role with St. Louis will likely be long relief and/or mop-up duty. It would not be surprising if the Cardinals re-use Dickson’s 40-man roster spot after the season.
Speaking of which, on Wednesday, the Cardinals will also need to announce an immediate roster move to the 40-man to make room for Dickson. Rather than remove a player, the organization could instead shift a player deemed unable to return this season from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list. Candidates such as Ryan Helsley and Wade LeBlanc come to mind.
The return of Dakota Hudson (likely as a reliever) later this month will require other roster gyrations prior to his activation by St. Louis.
Wednesday morning update
Prior to their Wednesday doubleheader in Cincinnati, the Cardinals confirmed the two promotions, adding the shift of right-handed pitcher Helsley (right elbow stress reaction) to the 60-day IL.
