The St. Louis Cardinals announced today (Wednesday, August 29) they have placed veteran infielder Jedd Gyorko (JERK-oh) on the 10-day disabled list with a left groin strain. Rookie outfielder Adolis García (ah-DOLE-lees) was recalled from Memphis (AAA).
Gyorko, 29, was removed from Tuesday night’s game following a double in the eighth inning. The right-handed hitting infielder, who has started 20 games at third base in August, is batting .267 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI this season. In 24 games in August, Gyorko is batting .325 with 3 HR and 12 RBI, posting monthly highs in hits (25), runs (16) and doubles (6).
García, 25, has played in 112 games at Memphis, batting .256 with 22 home runs, 71 RBI, 25 doubles and stole 10 bases. He made his Major League debut on August 8 in Miami and played in five games for St. Louis going 1-for-11 with two outfield starts.
García will be in St. Louis and active for tonight’s game against the Pirates. Gyorko will be eligible to return from the disabled list on September 8.
Brian Walton’s take
First, Kolten Wong goes down on Tuesday and now Gyorko on Wednesday. Needless to say, St. Louis’ infield has taken a big hit this week.
The Cardinals have to hope that Gyorko’s DL stint will not be prolonged or his season could conclude as it started. Well, not technically. Gyorko suffered a hamstring injury in St. Louis’ fourth game of the season, and was out from April 3-16.
Garcia joins Patrick Wisdom (and reportedly Daniel Poncedeleon this weekend) as three core members of the division-champion Memphis Redbirds recalled to St. Louis early. While it is most important for St. Louis to have injury replacements, the moves could have a negative effect on the Redbirds’ quest for a repeat Pacific Coast League title.
While Wisdom could get some starts at third base, this could mean that Matt Carpenter will return to third and Jose Martinez or Matt Adams to first base more often than in recent weeks.
