Cardinals Arizona Fall League Notebook – October 9, 2024

In their season opener on Tuesday, the Glendale Desert Dogs outslugged the Peoria Javelinas. Three Cardinals saw action in the later innings. Leonardo Bernal entered as a defensive replacement in the sixth, followed by Nathan Church in the eighth and Alex Cornwell pitched a scoreless eighth in relief.

Glendale Desert Dogs 15, Peoria Javelinas 13

The Desert Dogs prevailed over the Javelinas in a 15-13 slugfest on Tuesday at Camelback Ranch. Three Cardinals participated in the season opener. Leonardo Bernal and Nathan Church entered as defensive replacements and Alex Cornwell pitched out of the bullpen.

Leonardo Bernal

Bernal replaced starting catcher Michael Turner in the top of the sixth inning in the ninth spot in the lineup. The catcher had one at bat and popped out to first base in the home seventh.

Nathan Church

Nathan Church replaced starting center fielder Zyhir Hope in the top of the eighth. Church did not make a plate appearance, nor did he make a putout.

Alex Cornwell

Alex Cornwell pitched the eighth inning. The lefty retired all three batters he faced on two groundouts and a strikeout swinging.

No other Cardinals saw action.

The Desert Dogs are 1-0 in the first week of AFL action.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Salt River Rafters, Connor Phillips RHP (0-0, 0.00) vs. Yu-Min Lin LHP (0-0, 0.00) 3:30 CT.
