The Glendale Desert Dogs fell to the Scottsdale Scorpions in Thursday’s AFL action. Right-hander Chen-Wei Lin started his fourth game on the mound. D.J. Carpenter pitched the eighth inning in his sixth relief outing.

Glendale Desert Dogs 5 at Scottsdale Scorpions 10
The Glendale Desert Dogs fell to the Scottsdale Scorpions in a road contest on Thursday.
Two St. Louis Cardinals prospects participated. Chen-Wei Lin started his fourth game on the mound for the Desert Dogs. D.J. Carpenter made his sixth relief appearance.
Lin started for Glendale. He issued a lead-off walk and back-to-back singles to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first inning. The right-hander recorded his first out via a sacrifice fly to allow a run to score. Lin yielded his third single of the inning before inducing a flyout and a strikeout with the bags full to limit the damage.
Lin was greeted roughly in the second inning, as he allowed a home run to the first batter of the frame. The next hitter reached on an infield single. The 23-year-old recorded his second backwards K of the game and a flyout. Looking to secure the final out of the inning, Lin threw a wild pitch and the catcher committed an error to allow a runner to advance from first base to third base. Lin hit a batter to put runners at the corners. The right-hander surrendered a triple to bring both runners home and a wild pitch brought Scottsdale’s fifth run home. Lin recorded a swinging strikeout to end the frame and was lifted for a fresh arm in the third. The right-hander pitched two innings and allowed five runs on six hits, one walk, and three strikeouts, as his ERA rose to 8.68. He threw 47 pitches, 27 for strikes.
With Glendale down 7-5 in the bottom of the eighth, Carpenter took the mound in relief as he looked to keep the game close.
The right-hander gave up a lead-off double. He retired the next batter via a groundout, with the runner moving to third base on the play. Carpenter allowed a single for a run to come home and followed with a walk and another single for a second runner to cross home plate. Carpenter secured the second out of the frame via a strikeout. Carpenter yielded another single to bring a third runner home in the frame. He recorded a backwards K to end the inning. Carpenter pitched one inning and allowed three earned runs on four hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. He threw 25 pitches, 17 for strikes.
No other Cardinals saw action in the game.
Glendale is 5-13 on the season and will play a home contest with the Peoria Javelinas on Friday. Darlin Saladin is slated to make his first start of his Arizona Fall League season.
