Three Cardinals played for the Glendale Desert Dogs as they beat the Surprise Saguaros on Wednesday. Lefty reliever Brycen Mautz tossed 1 2/3 hitless, scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Right-fielder Nathan Church and lefty reliever Alex Cornwell also appeared.

Glendale Desert Dogs 8 at Surprise Saguaros 7
At Surprise, the Desert Dogs defeated the Saguaros by the score of 8-7 on Wednesday. Three Cardinals participated. Nathan Church was in the starting lineup at leadoff and playing right field. Alex Cornwell and Brycen Mautz both pitched in relief.
Church went 0-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. To open the game, Church grounded out to first base.
In the third inning, Church lined out to third base. He flied out to right field in the fifth.
Church drew a walk in the seventh and scored on a three-run home run by Tim Elko of the Chicago White Sox.
In his final at bat, Church popped out to third base for the final out of the eighth inning.
Church picked up an outfield assist as he threw a runner out at home to close the fourth inning.
Alex Cornwell came in to pitch in relief in the bottom of the sixth inning with Glendale up 4-2. He allowed a single and retired three batters on a strikeout, pop out to third, and a ground out to second.
Cornwell returned to start the seventh with the Dogs’ lead having grown to 8-2, but he ran into trouble. He gave up two runs on a single and two doubles. He retired one hitter on a ground out to second but was then replaced by Mautz.
Mautz walked the first batter he faced to put two on, then buckled down and retired the next two on a strikeout and a lineout to third.
Mautz returned and had a 1-2-3 eighth inning on two punchouts and a ground out to first to protect the 8-4 Dogs lead.
No other Cardinals saw action on Wednesday.
Glendale is 11-8 for the AFL season.
