Glendale Desert Dogs 10, Salt River Rafters 4
The Glendale Desert Dogs bested the Salt River Rafters on Sunday, ending their losing streak at six games.
Two St. Louis Cardinals prospects participated. Miguel Ugueto started in right field and batted ninth. D.J. Carpenter pitched in relief.
Ugueto went 3-for-4 with a stolen base, two runs scored, and two RBI. Ugueto took his first trip to the plate in the bottom of the second inning with a runner at third with nobody out and lined an RBI single. He was then picked off at first base.
Ugueto stepped into the right-handed hitter’s box in the fourth with a man on third base and one out and legged out an infield single for his second RBI. He advanced to second on a walk, stole third, and came home on a wild pitch.
The 23-year-old flied out to right field in the sixth and led off the home eighth with a single, his third hit. Ugueto advanced to second via a wild pitch, moved to third on a flyout, and came home for Glendale’s 10th run on a sacrifice fly. Ugueto raised his batting average in the AFL to .341 and has 10 RBI in the AFL after the strong performance.
Carpenter took the mound in the top of the fifth inning with runners at second and third base, looking for one out to strand both. The right-hander notched a strikeout with five fastballs to neutralize the threat and was lifted for a new arm in the sixth. Carpenter recorded one out without a run allowed on no hits, no walks, and a strikeout. He threw five pitches, four for strikes, lowering his AFL ERA to 6.00.
Glendale tallied five hits with runners in scoring position, two from Ugueto, in the victory.
Glendale is 4-11 on the season. They are off Monday and will play a road contest with the Mesa Solar Sox on Tuesday.
