Cardinals Arizona Fall League Notebook – October 27, 2018

Surprise’s Saturday 4-0 shutout over Scottsdale featured five scoreless innings from Evan Kruczynski and three more combiined from Conner Greene and Will Latcham. Lane Thomas singled, but Tommy Edman went 0-for-4.

Surprise Saguaros 4, Scottsdale Scorpions 0

The Saguaros blanked the Scorpions on Saturday with five St. Louis Cardinals seeing action.  In the starting batting order were Lane Thomas, playing left field and batting sixth, and Tommy Edman, playing second base and batting eighth.

Thomas led off the second inning for his first at bat and struck out swinging.  The left fielder grounded out in the fourth, flied out in the sixth, and singled to right in the eighth.

Edman came to the plate for the first time in the second and struck out looking.  He led off the fifth and struck out swinging, grounded out in the sixth, and flied out in the eighth.

Surprise’s starting pitcher was Cardinals lefty Evan Kruczynski.  Kruczynski hurled five scoreless innings, allowing three hits, striking out five and walking two.  The left hander is 2-1 in the AFL with an ERA of 1.72.

Two Cardinals relievers followed Kruczynski. Conner Greene gave up one hit in his scoreless inning of relief, fanned one, walked one and threw a wild pitch.  Will Latcham tossed two scoreless innings, with one hit allowed, one strikeout and one free pass.

Houston’s top prospect, Forrest Whitley, took the loss for Scottsdale.

The Saguaros stand at 7-9, three games behind first-place Peoria in the AFL West.

Sunday’s game:  No game scheduled.
