Cardinals Arizona Fall League Notebook – October 23, 2021

The Glendale Desert Dogs defeated the Surprise Saguaros by a 9-2 score at Camelback Ranch on Friday. Three Cardinals saw action, two in the starting lineup and one pitcher out of the bullpen.  Lars Nootbaar and Juan Yepez drove in seven runs between them.

The Glendale Desert Dogs blew past the Surprise Saguaros by the score of 9-2 on Friday at Camelback Ranch.  Lars Nootbaar and Juan Yepez were in the starting lineup and Zack Thompson finished the game out of the bullpen.

Right fielder Nootbaar hit leadoff for Glendale and first baseman Yepez batted second in the lineup.

The Desert Dogs scored first with one run in the first inning.  Nootbaar led off the game with a double, and later scored on a single by the Angels’ Orlando Martinez.

Glendale added to its lead with four runs in the fourth inning.  Dodgers’ prospect James Outman hit a solo home run.  The Angels’ Jeremiah Jackson and the Dodgers’ Jacob Amaya singled.  Nootbaar drew a walk to load the bases.  Yepez followed with a bases clearing double to center field. The first sacker leads the AFL with 11 RBI.

The Desert Dogs went up 6-0 in the seventh on a solo home run by Yepez.  The Saguaros finally got on the board with two runs in the eighth.  Glendale answered in the home half of the frame with three more runs.  Outman doubled, and Amaya singled.  Nootbaar followed with a three-run home run to right field, his league-leading fourth.

Nootbaar went 2-for-4 with a walk, three RBI and three runs scored.  Yepez was 2-for-5 with a run scored and four RBI.

Zack Thompson took the mound in the ninth inning.  The left hander logged a scoreless frame, but it took 23 pitches and it was busy on the bases with one hit and two walks allowed along with one strikeout. With the bases loaded and one out, Thompson induced two infield pop outs to escape unscathed.

Saturday’s game:  vs. Solar Sox, Chad Donato RHP (1-0, 9.00) vs. Jeff Criswell RHP (1-0, 4.91) 8:35 CT.
