Cardinals Arizona Fall League Notebook – October 20, 2018

Three St. Louis Cardinals were in the starting lineup in the Surprise Saguaros’ extra-innings loss on Saturday. Andy Young hit his first AFL home run and walked twice, Tommy Edman doubled, walked, stole a base and plated one and Lane Thomas stole a base, drove in one and scored another.

Results for the game played on Saturday, October 20.

Surprise Saguaros 7, Scottsdale Scorpions 9 (11 innings)

The Saguaros fell in extra innings to the Scottsdale Scorpions on Saturday.  Three Cardinals were in the starting lineup for Surprise.

Tommy Edman was the leadoff hitter for the Saguaros and played third base.  Edman doubled to right in the first inning and later scored on a double by Surprise teammate Cole Tucker, from the Pirates organization.  Edman grounded out in the third and the fifth. He drew a walk and stole second base in the seventh.  The third sacker grounded out a third time in the eighth, then hit a sac fly to plate Memphis teammate Lane Thomas in the 10th.

Andy Young started at second base and hit sixth.  He grounded out in his first at bat in the first inning and drew a walk in the fourth.  Then in the sixth, Young blasted a solo home run to left field, for his first home run of the AFL.  Young popped out in the in the eighth and was intentionally walked in the ninth.

Lane Thomas (Springfield Cardinals)

Thomas was the eighth hitter in the lineup and played right field.  Thomas flied out in the second inning and struck out looking in the fourth.  In the sixth, Thomas grounded into a force out, but stole a base.  The right fielder drove in a run on a sac fly in the eighth but struck out swinging in the ninth.  Thomas began the 10th on second base and scored on Edman’s sac fly.

No other Cardinals saw action in the game, in which four of six Saguaros pitchers were scored upon. Surprise has a record of 5-5 and is in second place in the AFL West.

Sunday’s game:  No game scheduled.
