Lane Thomas (Springfield Cardinals)

The Saguaros defeated the Mesa Solar Sox on Friday night, with three St. Louis Cardinals minor leaguers seeing action.

Lane Thomas hit second and played left field.  In the initial inning, Thomas popped out to second base, then drew a walk in the fourth and later scored on a sac fly by Saguaro teammate Cavan Biggio, son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio and a Toronto Blue Jays prospect.   In his final two plate appearances, Thomas struck out swinging in the sixth, and hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth to drive in Surprise’s third and final run.

Jeremy Martinez (Palm Beach Cardinals)

The starting catcher for the Saguaros was Jeremy Martinez, who hit sixth.  The catcher singled in the second but was called out on a catcher interference with Saguaro teammate Julio Martinez at the plate.  The Cardinals’ Martinez lined out in the fourth and grounded into a double play in the seventh.  Martinez drew a walk in his final plate appearance in the ninth.

The final Cardinals minor leaguer to make an appearance was pitcher Conner Greene. Greene relieved Surprise starter Shawn Morimando of Toronto, and pitched 2 1/3 scoreless relief innings, striking out three and walking two, while allowing one hit.

The Saguaros’ AFL record stands at 5-4, and they are in second place in the AFL West behind the Peoria Javelinas.

Saturday’s game:  vs. Scottsdale, TBA 2:35 CT.
