Cardinals Arizona Fall League Notebook – October 15, 2023

To close out Week 2 of the 2023 AFL, the Scottsdale Scorpions defeated the Peoria Javelinas. Two Cardinals appeared in the seven-inning contest. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Andre Granillo, recorded his first save of the AFL season. Jeremy Rivas started at shortstop.

Scottsdale 3 at Peoria 2 (7 innings)

The Scottsdale Scorpions (7-4) topped the first-place Peoria Javelinas (8-3) in a seven-inning contest. It was Game 2 of a Saturday AFL triple-header at Goodyear Ballpark.

Jeremy Rivas started at shortstop and went 0-for-3 in the contest. In the AFL this season, Rivas is slashing .353/.389/.481/.860 through nine games. He has the third highest batting average on the team.

Out of the bullpen, Andre Granillo pitched the seventh and final inning for Scottsdale. TCN’s no. 37 prospect yielded two hits with one punchout to record his first save. Granillo has appeared in three games this season with seven strikeouts in four innings. His ERA through four innings is 4.50 with eight hits and one walk allowed.

The Scorpions went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stole five bases in the seven-inning contest. Angels prospect Davis Daniel tossed six innings with 10 strikeouts for Scottsdale. The Scorpions are in third place in the AFL with a four-game winning streak. The AFL is off on Sunday to end Week 2.

Cardinals through Week 2

To date, Victor Scott is 10-for-32 with one double. TCN’s no. 11 prospect has walked six times with nine stolen bases, the most in the AFL. Jimmy Crooks has only one hit in 12 plate appearances for the Scorpions. With four catchers on the roster, Crooks has primarily been coming off the bench as a pinch hitter.

Cooper Hjerpe has appeared in three games in relief for the Scorpions with one run surrendered in 3 2/3 innings. Hjerpe has eight strikeouts with only two walks given up. Edwin Nunez has a 4.15 ERA through two weeks of the season. In 4 1/3 innings, Nunez is 1-for-2 in save opportunities.

Inohan Paniagua surrendered five runs and three home runs. He also has struck out five in two appearances with a 9.00 ERA. Tekoah Roby started two games for Scottsdale. He has a 7.36 ERA with five strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.
