The Glendale Desert Dogs bested the Scottsdale Scorpions at Camelback Ranch on Thursday. Their first home game was also their first win in three games in the young season.

Due to impending inclement weather in the area, this previously scheduled evening contest was moved to an afternoon game.

Five St. Louis Cardinals participated in the win. Chen-Wei Lin started on the mound for Glendale before Darlin Saladin and Tyler Bradt pitched in relief. Miguel Ugueto started in left field and batted second. Graysen Tarlow hit eighth as the catcher.

Miguel Ugueto

Ugueto singled, walked, scored twice and hit a three-run home run in his first game of the AFL season. In the first inning, Ugueto struck out swinging. In the second frame, Ugueto crushed a three-run home run to widen Glendale’s lead to 6-0.

Ugueto singled in the fourth inning to bring home a run but was not credited with an RBI. The left fielder walked in the fifth, popped out on the infield fly rule in the sixth, and flied out in the eighth.

Graysen Tarlow

Tarlow was 1-for-3 with an RBI. The catcher began his outing by throwing the first baserunner of the game out at second base from behind the dish on a steal attempt. He lined a one-out single in the second inning and was thrown out at home. Tarlow struck out in his second trip to the plate (in the third) and was hit by a pitch to load the bases in the fourth, but did not cross home plate. The right-handed hitter popped out in foul territory in the sixth and drove in a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly in his final plate appearance.

Chen-Wei Lin

Starting pitcher Lin walked the first batter he faced, but it was neutralized by Tarlow’s caught stealing. The right-hander issued a second consecutive walk and allowed a double to put two in scoring position with one out. Lin struck out the next two hitters to escape the jam.

In the second inning, Lin began with his third strikeout, but then issued his third walk. Lin followed with another strikeout and induced a groundout to end his outing. The right-hander threw 57 pitches, 29 for strikes.

Darlin Saladin

Darlin Saladin entered the contest in the fourth inning. He secured two quick groundouts before issuing a walk, a wild pitch, and a second walk to put two on base with two outs. Saladin evaded the threat with the third groundout of the frame.

In the fifth, Saladin once more retired his first two batters, via a groundout and a strikeout before getting into trouble again. He allowed a single and threw a wild pitch to put the runner in scoring position before escaping the threat with his second strikeout.

The right-hander threw two scoreless innings on one hit, two walks, and two strikeouts. He threw 52 pitches, 28 for strikes.

Tyler Bradt

Tyler Bradt entered in relief of Saladin in the sixth inning. He struck out the first batter but then issued three consecutive walks to load the bags. The right-hander secured a swinging strikeout for the second out and induced a groundout to escape the jam.

Bradt threw one scoreless frame on no hits, three walks, and two strikeouts. He threw 30 pitches, 13 for strikes.

Glendale jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning and never trailed, as the lineup drew 11 walks and was 8-for-16 (.500) with runners in scoring position. The Desert Dogs’ pitching staff recorded 13 strikeouts collectively.

Glendale is 1-2 on the season and will play the Surprise Saguaros at home on Friday.

Friday’s game: vs. Surprise (3-0) RHP Luke Sinnard (0-0, 0.00) vs. Jesus Broca (0-0, 0.00) 3:30 PM CT.
