The Glendale Desert Dogs were shut out by the Surprise Saguaros on Wednesday. Two Cardinals pitchers appeared in relief. Matt Svanson threw two scoreless innings on two hits, no walks and three strikeouts. Brycen Mautz was charged with no runs but three inherited runners scored.

Glendale Desert Dogs 0, Surprise Saguaros 5
The Desert Dogs fell to the Saguaros in a 5-0 shutout on Wednesday. Two Cardinals participated with Brycen Mautz and Matt Svanson pitching in relief.
Mautz entered during the fifth inning in a tough situation, with no outs and the bases loaded. Surprise led 2-0, but the lefty couldn’t work through the trouble without more damage.
To the first batter he faced, Mautz gave up a single as an inherited run scored. He next allowed a single, with the other two inherited runners crossing the plate. Mautz retired the next three batters on a ground out, a line out and a pop out.
Mautz returned to pitch the sixth and retired all three hitters via two fly outs and a pop out.
Svanson followed, taking over to begin the seventh inning. He retired the first batter on a ground out, then gave up a single. Svanson struck out the final two hitters to end the inning.
Svanson returned to pitch the eighth. He struck out the first hitter and retired the next on a fly out to left field. Svanson gave up a double to right then retired the final batter on a fly out to left field.
Mautz and Svanson each faced eight batters and threw 30 pitches, with 18 strikes by Mautz and 20 by Svanson.
No other Cardinal appeared on Wednesday.
Glendale is 13-12 for the AFL season. After losing three straight, the Desert Dogs have fallen to four games behind Surprise (16-7).
Thursday’s game: at Surprise Saguaros, Grant Taylor RHP (2-0, 9.39) vs. Josh Stephan RHP (1-1, 0.54) 8:30 CT.
