St. Louis Cardinals press release

Chasen Shreve (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to tonight’s (Monday) series opener with Colorado that they have activated right-handed pitcher Carlos Martínez (right oblique strain) from the 10-day disabled list and added newly-acquired left-handed reliever Chasen Shreve to the team’s 25-man active roster.

The team also announced today that right-handed pitcher Luke Gregerson (right shoulder impingement) has been placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to July 26, and the option of left-handed pitcher Tyler Webb to Memphis following last night’s game.

Martinez (6-6, 3.39) is slated to make tonight’s start for St.  Louis.  He last pitched on July 19 at Chicago.

Shreve, acquired late Saturday night from the New York Yankees along with right-handed reliever Giovanny Gallegos, brings a 2-2 mark, one save, and a 4.26 ERA in 40 games pitched to the Redbirds.

Shreve has been assigned uniform no. 40.

Brian Walton’s take

The additions were expected, but the subtractions remained unknown until Monday afternoon.

This is Gregerson’s third DL stint this season, with his most recent time out from May 16 until July 12 with – you guessed it – a right shoulder impingement.

Poor Webb did not even merit mention of his two scoreless innings debut for St. Louis on Sunday night against the Cubs, but hey, at least I noted it here. The lefty yielded three hits, walked none and fanned one.
