St. Louis Cardinals press release
The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to tonight’s games that they have recalled right-handed pitcher John Gant from Memphis (AAA) and optioned right-handed pitcher Mike Mayers to the triple-A Redbirds. Gant is scheduled to start tonight’s game for the Cardinals.
Gant, 25, will be making his first start of the season for St. Louis tonight and his second appearance. He gained a win in his lone 2018 appearance for the Cardinals with 3.0 perfect innings of relief on April 26 against the New York Mets in a 13-inning win.
Gant, who has made 28 career appearances in the majors, including nine starts, was 4-0 with a 2.40 ERA in five starts for Memphis, ranking 7th in the Pacific Coast League in ERA while co-leading the league in wins. Gant’s last start for the Redbirds came on May 1 vs. Oklahoma City when he worked 6.0 innings, allowing two runs.
Mayers was recalled yesterday from Memphis and gained the win with 3.0 innings of relief vs. the Cubs in the 14-inning affair. Mayers is 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA and one save in his five relief appearances (9.2 IP) for the Cardinals this season.
Brian Walton’s take
Gant’s start had been previously announced so no surprise there. Any suspense that Mayers was not going to be the reliever to go down was spoiled when he was needed to go multiple innings on Sunday.
The reliever roulette wheel continues to spin!
