The St. Louis Cardinals activated outfielder Tyler O’Neill from the 10-day injured list and optioned first baseman John Nogowski to Triple-A Memphis.
O’Neill, who suffered a left middle finger fracture in the May 16 game at San Diego, went on the 10-day Injured List effective the next day. It was the starting left fielder’s second time on the IL this season, as he was also out from April 11-22 with a right groin strain.
The slugger is batting .250 (25-for-100) this season with eight home runs and 18 RBI in 30 games. Three of O’Neill’s home runs had come in his last six games prior to his latest injury.
To make room for O’Neill, first baseman John Nogowski was returned to Triple-A Memphis. The first baseman was only up two days, added on Tuesday when Harrison Bader was placed on the IL, and did not appear in any games.
For the season in three stints with St. Louis, Nogowski is 1-for-14 (.071) with one walk, one strikeout, one hit by pitch and two runs scored.
Other news
Palm Beach outfielder Matt Koperniak has been placed on the Temporarily Inactive List. The 23-year-old, a free agent signee last June, is slashing a power-short .240/.339/.340/.679 in 16 Class-A games.
The TI list is used for an excused leave of absence of at least three days. The reason can arise from one of a number of personal situations including paternity, bereavement or a family medical emergency.
