St. Louis Cardinals press release
The St. Louis Cardinals announced that they have activated right-handed pitcher Tyson Ross today (Tuesday) and that they had optioned right-handed pitcher John Brebbia to Memphis (AAA) following last night’s game.
Ross, 31, who was claimed off waivers from San Diego on Sunday, is expected to join the St. Louis bullpen.

Overall this season, the former 2014 National League All-Star and nine-year veteran right-hander has gone 6-9 with a 4.45 ERA (123.1 IP) and 107 strikeouts in 22 starts with the Padres. Ross has limited opposing batters to a .240 average against (112-466), including a .177 mark (38-215) against right-handed hitters that ranks as the 4th-lowest among all qualified Major League pitchers.
Brebbia is 1-3 with a 3.83 ERA (40.0 IP), two saves, and 45 strikeouts in 33 games across five stints for St. Louis this season. In six games since his most recent recall on July 21, the 28-year-old has logged a 2.45 ERA and struck out nine over 7.1 innings.
Ross has been assigned uniform no. 33.
Brian Walton’s take
The only even small surprise is the news shared on Monday – that Ross will not be joining the rotation – at least right away. With all of the team’s young starters, I support the apparent decision to give them the priority to open games instead.
Coming into Tuesday, Memphis was down one player so does not need to make an additional roster move to accommodate the return of Brebbia.
