Brian Walton’s take

As club officials had explained earlier in the week, catcher Matt Wieters would be activated in Chicago. So it was on Friday, prior to Game 1 of the Cubs series. The 32-year old had been on the injured list since August 20 with a bruised toe and was traveling with the club at the first stop in Cincinnati. Wieters had been on the five-man taxi squad as the designated catcher. He now trades places with Andrew Knizner.

In his role as the rarely-used primary reserve to Yadier Molina, Wieters has no hits and one walk in 13 plate appearances this season. Knizner is 4-for-16, .250, in 2020.

I had already disclosed the Cruz news Friday morning. The reliever is off the 40-man roster, but remains in the 60-man player pool for 2020.

What is next

To continue the team’s string of transactions, on Saturday, the club is expected to activate left-handed relief pitcher Andrew Miller. The Cardinals will also add a 29th man to the roster for the day’s doubleheader, almost certainly a pitcher.

However, candidates do not include Daniel Ponce de Leon, who threw a side session on Friday or Carlos Martinez, who is written in manager Mike Shildt’s “dark pencil” to start one of the two double-header games ahead on Tuesday.
