St. Louis Cardinals press release
The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to today’s (Wednesday, April 24) series finale that they have activated outfielder Harrison Bader (right hamstring strain) from the 10-day Injured List and optioned right-handed pitcher Daniel Ponce de Leon to Memphis (AAA).
Bader, whose injury was back-dated to April 14, was batting .179 (7-for-39) with 2 HR’s and 5 RBI in his 13 games played to begin the season. Ponce de Leon fanned seven in 5.0 innings pitched last night in his start against Milwaukee.
Brian Walton’s take
Not much to say here. The Cards would rather have an extra hitter for the next four or five games and let Ponce de Leon get in his in-between start work back with Memphis.
The current assumption is that Michael Wacha will be ready to return to the rotation after the 10-day minimum stint on the IL. That would seem to line him up for next Tuesday’s game in Washington. Wacha was placed on the IL retroactive to April 19.
Perhaps in part due to the wet field conditions, Bader is not in manager Mike Shildt’s Wednesday afternoon lineup. Instead, rookie Lane Thomas is making his first-ever MLB start, batting eighth and playing in center field. Bader will likely be back in his regular spot after Thursday’s off day.
