On the 4-4 Tuesday across the St. Louis Cardinals system, Player of the Day Kyle Leahy had a dominant six-inning scoreless start with 10 strikeouts for Peoria, but his pen couldn’t hold the lead. State College and Johnson City won behind double-digit scoring.

Results from games played Tuesday, June 25th.

Nashville 10 at Memphis 4

Junior Fernandez (USA TODAY Sports Images)

The Redbirds began a nine-game homestand with a 10-4 loss to Nashville.

Starter Anthony Shew lasted just two frames, giving up three runs on five hits including a two-run home run and left with what appeared to be an injury. The five-run third off Seth Elledge in his Triple-A debut broke a 3-3 tie.  Elledge permitted six hits and two base-on-balls with two outs recorded.

Also in his first game with the Redbirds, Junior Fernandez fanned five over 3 1/3 frames with two hits yielded.  Chris Beck tossed two shutout frames before Tommy Layne was charged with two unearned tallies in the ninth.

Memphis (33-45) managed 10 hits with designated hitter Adolis Garcia going 3-for-4 with a stolen base while batting fifth.  Edmundo Sosa and Irving Lopez posted identical marks, each going 2-for-4 with a walk and solo bomb.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Nashville (32-45) (TEX), 6:35 pm CT, Harold Arauz (3-1, 5.58)

Springfield – off

Dylan Carlson (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The 2019 Texas League All-Star Game took place Tuesday evening at ONEOK Field, home of the Tulsa Drillers (LAD) with the South squad prevailing over the North, 5-1.

Dylan Carlson started in center for the North team and singled once with a stolen base in four at bats with two strikeouts and two left on base.  Carlson eventually played all three outfield positions after participating in the Home Run Derby.

Springfield’s only pitching representative was Austin Warner who inherited a scoreless contest to begin the third.   The southpaw fanned the South’s number nine hitter before giving up a groundball single to second.  Warner finished his inning with two fly outs, to right and center, respectively.

Wednesday’s game:   Off

Palm Beach 4 at Florida 2

Scott Hurst (Memphis Redbirds)

Palm Beach (2-5) made an early lead hold up at they topped the Fire Frogs, 4-2, in the road series opener.

The visitors struck in the first when Scott Hurst went yard with Lars Nootbaar (single) aboard.  The second featured a lead-off home run by Nolan Gorman, his initial class A-Advanced bomb.  Dennis Ortega followed with an infield single and eventually scored on Nootbaar’s double with two gone.

The Beach Birds mustered six hits in all with Hurst and Nootbaar both going 2-for-4.  Defensively, Gorman committed a fielding miscue at third, his first Florida State League error.

In his Palm Beach return, Angel Rondon (W, 5-1) produced a solid effort, holding Florida to two runs on seven hits and a walk in 5 1/3.  Patrick Dayton retired eight batters, stranding two inherited runners, before C.J. Saylor tossed a one-two-three ninth with two strikeouts for his first save.

Wednesday’s game:  at Florida (2-6) (ATL), 6:00 pm ET, Perry DellaValle (2-3, 2.71)

Clinton 4, Peoria 2

Kyle Leahy (Peoria Chiefs)

Player of the Day Kyle Leahy’s 10-strikeout performance was not enough as Peoria (2-3) was clipped at Clinton, 4-2, in the first of four games between the two teams.

Leahy, our Player of the Day, was outstanding over six innings, limiting the opposition to two hits and a hit batsman while fanning 10.  The right-hander’s only trouble occurred in the fifth after a lead-off single followed by second baseman Brendan Donovan’s fielding error put two on with none out.  But Leahy sandwiched a 4-3 groundball out between two swinging K’s to escape the jam.

The scoreless game was finally broken in the visitor’s half of the seventh.  Donovan led off with a single and scored via Juan Yepez’ sixth double of the season.  Yepez raced home after Bryce Denton tripled to center, putting Leahy in line for the apparent victory.

After tossing a clean seventh, Cole Aker was not able to duplicate his feat the next inning.  Aker (L, 0-3) (BS,1) was charged with three runs on three hits In 1 1/3, his last runner soring under Evan Sisk’s watch after the latter surrendered a two-run bomb.

Offensively, Donovan and Brandon Riley each had two of the team’s seven hits.

Wednesday’s game:  at Clinton (2-3) (MIA), 6:30 pm CT, Colin Schmid (3-2, 4.46)

State College 13 vs. Mahoning Valley 9

Jonatan Machado (Peoria Chiefs)

A huge late rally propelled State College (7-4) past the Scrappers, 13-9, in the home series opener.  The win lifts the Spikes into a second-place tie with Mahoning Valley, both teams a half game behind Batavia (MIA).

Offense was plentiful in the high octane affair, the two squads combining for 27 hits.  The Spikes trailed 9-7 heading into the bottom of the eighth but exploded for six tallies to flip the score to 13-9.

Eight of nine Spikes garnered at least one of the team’s 15 hits, led by center fielder Jonatan Machado and right fielder Stanley Espinal, who both went 3-for-4.  Machado added a walk and run scored but Espinal was even more productive, finishing a home run shy of the cycle with a base-on-balls, touched home three times and drove in two.

Designated hitter Pedro Pages, St. Louis’ sixth round pick in the June 2019 First-Year Player Draft, continued his hot hitting, singling twice in three at bats with two walks, two runs scored and two RBIs.  Pages, who is now hitting .583, was joined in the two-hit column by left fielder Andres Luna and third baseman Brylie Ware.

Spikes’ hurlers had a tough time recording outs, as their first three pitchers each gave up three runs.  Starter Jeremy Randolph lasted just two innings, yielding three hits and four free passes.  Scott Politz went four frames, allowing three hits and two walks, including a three-run long ball.

Connor Thomas (W, 1-0) permitted five hits during his two innings on the bump and was the pitcher of record when his teammates mounted their comeback.  Fabian Blanco, the sole State College pitcher not scored upon, struck out two in the ninth.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Mahoning Valley (7-4) (CLE), 7:05 pm ET, Michael Baird (2-0, 0.00)

Johnson City 14 at Greeneville 6

Zach Jackson (Peoria Chiefs)

Johnson City (4-2) kicked off a three-game road series with a 14-6 pasting of the Reds.

The Appy Birds exploded for 18 hits with three players collecting three hits each – designated hitter Zach Jackson, first baseman Todd Lott and catcher Brandon Purcell.  Jackson and Lott both went 3-for-5 with a double and three runs scored, with Jackson adding a triple and RBI, while Purcell drove in three on a 3-for-4 effort that included a double.

Five of the visitors’ tallies were generated by three long balls, one each by third baseman Chandler Redmond, left fielder David Vinsky and second baseman Liam Sabino.  Redmond’s and Vinsky’s bombs came with one aboard.

18-year-old Jose Moreno recorded just three outs, surrendering six runs on five hits and two walks in one plus innings.  Three of the six tallies were generated by one home run.

Enrique Perez and Tyler Peck each tossed a clean frame, Perez leaving Moreno’s final runner aboard.  Jake Sommers (W, 1-0) retired all six batters faced, striking out three while Saniel Santana worked around three hits for 2 2/3 scoreless innings.  Leonardo Taveras fanned all four batters faced, stranding an inherited runner.

Wednesday’s game:  at Greeneville (3-4) (CIN), 6:30 pm ET, Francisco Justo (1-0, 1.80)

GCL Mets 11 at GCL Cardinals 8

A six-run third inning proved an insurmountable obstacle as the Gulf Birds (0-2) were clipped by the Mets, 11-8.

Ludwin Jimenez (L, 0-1), making his first start since being promoted from the DSL Cardinals Red, lasted just 2 1/3 innings.  The 17-year-old permitted seven tallies on seven hits, two walks, two wild pitches and a plunked batter.

Both runs charged to Hector Soto during his 2 2/3-inning stint were produced by a home run, one of two hits yielded to go with a wild pitch and four strikeouts.  The righty stranded an inherited runner.  Roy Garcia, Wilman Madera, Anthony Trompiz and Martin Cordoba each recorded three outs with Trompiz surrendering a solo shot and Cordoba giving up a run on two hits.

The Gulf Cardinals banged out 14 hits, led by Yowelfy Rosario’s perfect day at the plate.  The third baseman went 4-for-4 with a run scored out of the seven slot.  Alongside Rosario was lead-off batter Franklin Soto, who finished a long ball shy of the cycle with three hits in four at bats, including a walk, double and triple plus four runs scored.

Center fielder Trejyn Fletcher followed up his 3-for-5 professional debut effort on Monday by taking part in three runs.  The second-round selection in the June 2019 First-Year Player Draft went 2-for-5 with a double, two-run blast that accounted for his run scored and two of his three RBIs.  Luis Montano and William Jimenez each went 2-for-5 and touched home once. Montano doubled with two driven in and Jimenez went yard with the bases empty.

Wednesday’s game:  Off

DSL Cardinals Blue 6 at DSL Yankees 4

The Cardinals Blue (13-5) rallied twice for a 6-4 victory over the Yankees (10-9).  It was the C-Blue’s fifth win in their last six games.

Down 4-2, after seven the Blue scored three times in the last two innings.  Right fielder Darlin Moquette went 3-for-5 with a double and RBI, raising his batting average to .406.  Shortstop Darlyn Del Villar reached base four times, singling and doubling in two at bats with two free passes, crossed home twice and knocked in one.

The final two Cardinals Blue players with more than one of the team’s nine hits were center fielder Hansel Otamendi and catcher/first baseman Luis Rodriguez.  Moquette and Otamendi each swiped a bag, Moquette’s ninth and the latter’s fourth.

Gustavo J. Rodriguez pitched a strong five-inning effort, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and a walk while fanning six.  The righty was in line for second win of 2019 after his teammates rallied with two tallies in the visitor half of the sixth for a 3-2 lead.

But William Miranda (BS, 1) yielded two runs in the bottom of the inning, setting the stage for the second and final rally.  Ronald Suarez (W, 1-0) shut down the Yankees on a hit and walk over the next two frames before Cristoffer Zapata hurled a one-two-three ninth for his fourth save.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. DSL Nationals (2-16), 10:30 am ET, Engels Martinez (1-0, 9.90)

DSL Phillies White 3 at DSL Cardinals Red 0

The Cardinals Red (8-13) managed just four base runners in their 3-0 loss to the Phillies White.

Luis Andujar’s single with two gone in the eighth broke up the opposition’s no-hit bid and was his squad’s only hit.

Edgar Manzo (L, 0-1) tossed a solid effort, yielding three runs, two earned, on five hits and two free passes in 5 2/3 innings.  The Mexico native fanned six.  Ramon Fernandez scattered four hits and a base-on-balls over the final 4 1/3 frames and stranded Manzo’s last runner.

Wednesday’s game:  at DSL Phillies White (14-7), 10:30 am ET, tandem – Yonael Dominguez (1-0, 6.75)/Miguel Yedis (0-1, 7.71)

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 24, 2019

photo: Lane Thomas (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

On the 3-3 Sunday across the St. Louis Cardinals system, Player of the Day Lane Thomas had three hits, including two home runs for Memphis, which lost Alex Reyes due to injury. Springfield’s offense exploded for 12 runs and Johnson City had good pitching and just enough offense to win.

Results from games played Sunday, June 23rd.

Memphis 8 at Oklahoma City 2

Lane Thomas (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The Redbirds led from start to finish as they flew past the Dodgers, 8-2, for a three-games-to-one series’ lead with one still on tap.  Memphis (32-44) has won three straight but still trail Iowa (CHC) by 10 games in the American Northern Division standings.

The offense’s 12-hit attack was spearheaded by Player of the Day Lane Thomas, who went 3-for-4 with two solo shots that were two of his three knocked in.  Kramer Robertson and John Nogowski had two hits apiece. Robertson singled twice in four at bats with a run scored while Nogowski went 2-for-5 with a double, triple, run scored and three RBIs.  Thomas and Robertson were caught stealing in their only stolen base attempts.

The only cloud on Memphis’ win was the early departure of starter Alex Reyes, who exited with right pectoral tightness during his first batter in the second inning.  The righty gave up a hit and walk with two strikeouts – one swinging, one looking –and threw 26 pitches, 15 for strikes.

Jesus Cruz (W, 2-5) took over for Reyes faced just one over the minimum during his three-inning stint while fanning three.  Tommy Layne tossed two scoreless innings but Chris Beck was charged with two tallies on five hits with five outs recorded.  Chasen Shreve retired all four batters faced, two via strikeouts, stranding Beck’s final two runners.

Monday’s game:  at Oklahoma City (30-44) (LAD), 7:05 pm CT, Mike Hauschild (0-1, 15.19)

Springfield 12 at Corpus Christi 5

Jose Godoy (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The S-Cards finally put one in the win column for the second half, routing the Hooks, 12-5.  The victory salvaged the fourth and final game between the two squads and snapped a five-game losing skid by Springfield (1-5), already four games behind co-leaders Arkansas (SEA) and Tulsa (LAD) in the North Division standings.

The visitors translated eight hits and eight walks into 12 runs, 10 earned.  Springfield blew the game open with a six-run sixth that included a grand slam by Jose Godoy, his only hit in five at bats.

Justin Toerner also went yard with one aboard two innings later. The long ball was one of the right fielder’s two hits in three at bats with a walk, stolen base, three runs scored and two driven in.  Third baseman Alberto Triunfel went 2-for-3 with a free pass, double and two runs scored while batting ninth.

Five Springfield pitchers navigated nine innings, beginning with Johan Oviedo.  The righty surrendered a solo shot representing one of his two hits and three walks allowed in just two innings.  Will Latcham and Connor Jones both recorded six outs. Latcham gave up a solo blast among three hits and Jones was tagged for a three-run long ball.

Roel Ramirez (W, 2-1) retired all six batters faced, five of them via the K.  Junior Fernandez tossed a one-two-three ninth.

Monday’s game:  Off

Palm Beach 0 at Dunedin 8

Ronnie Williams (Springfield Cardinals FANatic Photos)

The Cards’ bats were held to just four hits as they were blanked 8-0 by the Blue Jays (4-2) (TOR).  Palm Beach (1-5) won just one of the four-game series and sit in last place in the South Division standings, 4 ½ games behind St Lucie (NYM).

Griffin Roberts (L, 0-2) was unable to finish the fourth, yielding six runs on four hits and six walks in 3 1/3 innings.  To record seven outs, it took the righty 82 pitches, 43 strikes.

A quintet of Beach Bird relievers covered the final 4 2/3 frames.  Ramon Santos was ineffective with two runs permitted on four hits and a base-on-balls with two retired.  Santos allowed both inherited runners to score.

Ronnie Williams (1 1/3) and Mitchell Osnowitz (2/3) joined forces to handle the fifth and sixth. The latter fanned two.  Patrick Dayton struck out the side in the seventh, negating a hit allowed, before Ben Yokley worked around a hit in his inning on the bump.

Third baseman Zack Gahagan singled twice in four at bats and Luken Baker’s double was the only hit to go for extra bases. No. 1 prospect Nolan Gorman, off to a 2-for-10 start with his new team, did not play.

Monday’s game:  Off

Cedar Rapids 8 at Peoria 6

Bryce Denton (Peoria Chiefs)

The Chiefs pen blew a ninth-inning lead in their 8-6 defeat by Cedar Rapids (2-2) (MIN), resulting in a split of their four-game set.  Peoria (2-2) is tied for fourth with the Kernels, a game in back of Kane County (ARI) and Wisconsin (MIL) in the Western Division standings.

Peoria had taken its second lead of the day in the home half of the eighth via Bryce Denton’s grand slam to go up 6-4.  But the combination of Freddy Pacheco and Edgar Escobar handed the lead and win right back via a four-run ninth.  Pacheco had worked around a walk for a clean eighth but the righty sandwiched two more free passes around an RBI triple plus a wild pitch that scored the tying run the next frame.  Escobar served up a two-run double before recording his only out.

That spoiled a fine performance by Alvaro Seijas, who held the Kernels to two runs on four hits and a base-on-balls through six innings.  Seijas finished with the score knotted at two all but Sebastian Tabata gave Cedar Rapids their first lead in the two-run seventh by yielding three hits.

The only Chief with more than one of the team’s eight hits was Juan Yepez, who doubled twice in four at bats with an RBI out of the three hole.  Denton’s bomb came with Delvin Perez (single), Ivan Herrera (walk) and Brady Whalen (error) aboard.

Monday’s game:  Off

State College 5 at West Virginia 8

Andres Luna (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

The Spikes could not overcome Jacob Schlesener’s shaky start, falling to the Black Bears, 8-5, for a three-game sweep by West Virginia (6-4) (PIT).  The defeat places State College (6-4) in a three-way tie for second with the Black Bears and Batavia (MIA), all of which trail Mahoning Valley (CLE) by a game in the Pinckney Division standings.

Schlesener (L, 0-1) put his squad in an immediate hole by yielding a five spot in his initial inning on the bump.  The lefty allowed seven runs in all on six hits and four walks over 4 1/3 frames.  Two of the six hits were home runs with a runner on.

Rodard Avelino followed Schlesener to the mound and likewise had difficulty finding the strike zone.  The 20-year-old did not give up a hit in 1 1/3 innings but issued four free passes resulting in one run permitted.  Logan Gregg fanned four over the final 2 1/3.

The visitors managed just five hits but benefited from the 10 free passes issued by West Virginia’s pitching staff.  While no Spike had more than one hit, Andres Luna generated the most results, going 1-for-3 with two walks, a double, run scored and two RBIs.  First baseman Dariel Gomez reached base four times, singling once in one at bats with three free passes and touching home twice.

Monday’s game:  Off

Johnson City 3 at Danville 2

Wilfredo Periera (Robert Kell)

A big third combined with a strong pitching effort propelled the JC-Cards over the Braves, 3-2, in the rubber game of the three-game series.  Johnson City (2-2) is in second place in the East Division, 1 ½ games behind Kingsport (NYM).

The Appy Birds used some focused hitting and canny base running to score all three of their runs in the third.  Left fielder Diomedes Del Rio opened with a single and raced to third on second baseman Ben Baird’s single to right.  Right fielder Terry Fuller hit into a force at second, which brought Del Rio across the plate and tied the game at one all.

Fuller promptly stole second, putting him in easy position to score on a double to left by shortstop Mateo Gil.  Third baseman Chandler Redmond’s two-out double to left drove in Gil for the final tally.  Johnson City mustered just two more hits the rest of the day.

Tasked with holding Danville (3-2) in check, starter Wilfredo Pereira and reliever Will Guay were up to the challenge.  Pereira limited the Braves to two runs, one earned, on four hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings.  The 20-year-old Panamanian surrendered a second inning solo shot and unearned tally in his final inning on the bump.

Guay truly earned his first professional save with 3 1/3 frames of shutout ball.  The righty, St. Louis’ 24th-round selection in the recent draft, struck out five while allowing two hits plus a walk and stranded an inherited runner.

Monday’s game:  Off

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 21, 2019

photo: Stanley Espinal (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 6-2 on Thursday, with Memphis and Springfield taking losses. Players of the Day Stanley Espinal and Dariel Gomez powered State College to a twin-bill sweep. The former plated four in Game 1 and the latter walked off Game 2 with a three-run blast.

Results from games played Thursday, June 20th.

Memphis 3 at Oklahoma City 5

Kramer Robertson (Andrew Miller/Palm Beach Cardinals)

The Redbirds dropped the road series opener at Oklahoma City, 5-3, extending their current losing streak to five.  Third-place Memphis (29-44) is a distant 12 games in back of the division-leading Cubs in the American Northern standings.

Making his first start and second appearance since his long Injured List stint, Mike Hauschild kept the game competitive by permitting just one hit through three innings.  The veteran was charged with an unearned tally via shortstop Kramer Robertson’s two-base throwing error and a single in his final inning of work.

Tandem starter Anthony Shew (L, 1-3) allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits and three walks over the final five innings.  Two of those hits were solo shots.

Robertson’s bat overcame his defensive lapse with three hits in four at bats including two doubles and two RBI.  The rest of the Memphis lineup combined only matched Robertson’s three hits on the evening.

Friday’s game:  at Oklahoma City (30-41) (LAD), 7:05 pm CT, Harold Arauz (3-1, 4.85)

Springfield 2 at Corpus Christi 10

Starter Tommy Parsons did not finish the fourth as the S-Cards were thumped by the Hooks, 10-2, in the road series opener.  Springfield (0-3) is in last place in the North Division standings to begin the second half, three games behind Arkansas (SEA) and Tulsa (LAD).

Parsons (L, 1-1) was bitten by four long balls accounting for five of the seven scores yielded in 3 1/3 innings.  The righty allowed seven hits and two free passes in all.

Parson’s last two runners scored after Will Latcham surrendered the first of his two home runs during his 1 2/3-inning stint.  Connor Jones was charged with a run on a hit and walk in two frames before Jacob Patterson struck out the side in the eighth.

Meanwhile, the Springfield offense was held to just three hits, including two in the two-run eighth.  Jose Martinez’ single advanced Dylan Carlson (walk) to third, putting the latter in position to score via Justin Toerner’s force out before Johan Mieses doubled home Toerner.

Friday’s game:  at Corpus Christi (1-2) (HOU), 7:15 pm CT, Austin Warner (4-5, 3.77)

Palm Beach 5 at Dunedin 4

Ronnie Williams (Springfield Cardinals FANatic Photos)

The Beach Birds survived a ninth-inning Dunedin rally to edge the Blue Jays, 5-4, in the first of their four-game road series.  Fifth-place Palm Beach (1-2) trails division-leading Jupiter (MIA) by two games in the second-half South Division standings.

Reliever Ronnie Williams (W, 3-2) pitched two frames of shutout ball with two hits allowed.  The righty was the pitcher of record when his teammates caught and passed Dunedin on the scoreboard after putting up a straight number in the fifth through seventh frames.

Starter Perry DellaValle was charged with three runs on five hits and three walks, including a solo blast, in five innings.  Patrick Dayton faced the minimum in the eighth but got the hook after yielding a single and walk to his first two batters the next frame.  Ben Yokley (S, 4) retired all three batters faced but not before a sac fly with one gone brought Dunedin to within one.

Palm Beach banged out 11 hits, led by Lars Nootbaar, who went 3-for-5 with a solo long ball that was one of his two knocked in.  Scott Hurst and Luken Baker each singled twice in four at bats. Hurst added a walk and Baker drove in one.  Nolan Gorman went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored in his Florida State League debut.

Friday’s game:  at Dunedin (1-2) (TOR), 6:30 pm ET, Diego Cordero (league debut)

Peoria 4 vs. Cedar Rapids 2

Colin Schmid (Brett Jacomet photo)

The Chiefs kicked off their season’s second half with a 4-2 victory over Cedar Rapids in the series opener at Dozer Park.

The win required a late rally by the home team, which trailed 2-1 after six.  A seventh-inning home run by Bryce Denton knotted the game at 2-2, setting the table for Brendan Donovan to go yard with Juan Yepez (error) aboard the next frame.

Denton and Leandro Cedeno both went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Colin Schmid tossed a strong effort, striking out seven in six frames with two runs allowed on seven hits and a base-on-balls.  Sebastian Tabata (W, 3-1) tossed two frames of shutout ball before handing off to Freddy Pacheco.  Pacheco recorded two outs but left the sacks jammed on a hit and two walks.  Cole Aker struck out his only batter for his third save.

Friday’s game:  vs. Cedar Rapids (0-1) (MIN), 6:35 pm CT, Michael Brettell (2-4, 4.35)

State College 7 vs. Williamsport 4 (7 innings) – Game 1
State College 7 vs. Williamsport 6 (7 innings) – Game 2

Stanley Espinal (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

The Spikes claimed a pair from the Crosscutters, 7-4 and 7-6, extending their winning streak to five, including the three-game series’ sweep of fifth-place Williamsport (2-5).  State College (6-1) sits atop the Pinckney Division, a game ahead of Mahoning Valley (CLE).

In Game 1, the home team’s 10 hits were disbursed among six Spikes, four of whom had multi-hit efforts.  Andres Luna, Andrew Warner, Stanley Espinal and Matt Duce had two hits apiece. Luna and Warner both touched home twice.  Espinal and Duce scored one time each with co-Player of the Day Espinal driving in four and Duce one.  Warner’s first professional triple and two doubles by Duce were the only hits to go for extra bases.

Pitching honors go to State College’s relief corps as a trio of Spikes’ relievers were tasked with covering 6 1/3 frames.  Starter Inohan Paniagua recorded just two outs – but not before giving up three runs on two hits, two walks and a wild pitch.

Michael Baird (W, 2-0) performed well, striking out six over four innings, and issuing just one free pass.  Martin Cordova notched a swinging K to end a threat in the fifth, stranding two inherited runners in scoring position.  One of those runners had reached via one of the Spikes’ two miscues.  Cordova worked around a hit and base-on-balls for a clean sixth but Rodard Avelino was tagged with an unearned score the next frame.

Dariel Gomez (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

The finale’s walk-off victory required a late rally of five runs over the last two innings.  Down 6-2 through five, State College closed the gap with a two-run sixth before walking off on Dariel Gomez’ three-run home run.

Co-Player of the Day Gomez’ long ball was hit only hit in four at bats and one of the squad’s nine hits overall.  Luna and Brylie Ware had two hits each. Luna singled and doubled in three at bats with a walk, run scored and RBI and Ware went 2-for-4 with two driven in.

Francis Ventura went the initial four plus frames, yielding five runs on seven hits and three free passes, including a two-run home run.  In his professional debut, Logan Gregg recorded three outs, giving up a triple which scored Ventura’s final two runners plus another tally of his own.  Hector Villalobos (W, 1-0) tossed two innings, allowing a hit.

Friday’s game:  at fourth-place West Virginia (3-4) (PIT), 7:05 pm ET, Nathanael Heredia (0-0, 27.00)

Johnson City vs. Pulaski – postponed

Thursday’s series finale between second-place Johnson City (1-1) and Pulaski (1-1) (NYY) was postponed due to inclement weather.  Since the teams only meet once more this season, the contest has been re-scheduled as part of a road twin bill at Pulaski on August 18th.

Friday’s game:  at Danville (2-1) (ATL), 6:30 pm ET, RHP Julio Puello (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

DSL Cardinals Blue 11 at DSL Rockies 10 (10 innings)

The Cardinals Blue (11-4) prevailed over the Rockies (10-6), 11-10, in 10 innings, thanks to a manufactured tally.

Darlin Moquete, who began the frame at second, scored the winning margin without a hit.  Second baseman Carlos Arcia worked a free pass before shortstop Darlyn Del Villar laid a sac bunt down the third base line, advancing both runners.

That brought Gustavo A Rodriguez and his .368 batting average to the plate.  The right fielder came through with a sacrifice fly to center.

The C-Blue’s balanced offense featured eight of nine starters with at least one of the team’s nine hits.  While catcher Jose Zapata was the only Cardinals Blue player with a multi-hit performance, singling twice in five at bats with a run scored, Moquete and Arcia garnered the most results.  Moquete went 1-for-4 with two walks, three runs scored and two stolen bases while Arcia singled once in two at bats, worked two free passes, touched home twice, knocked in two and swiped a bag.  The visitors were assisted by two Rockies’ errors leading to three unearned tallies.

The C-Blues’ mound effort was a mixed bag.  Starter Yordy Richard lasted just seven outs, yielding eight runs on five hits and five base-on-balls.  Ronald Suarez went 2 2/3 shutout innings on a hit and three walks but allowed two of three inherited runners to touch home.

Benjamin Arias pitched the sixth, permitting two tallies on a hit and three free passes.  Luis Tena and Nelson Prada (W, 3-1) each pitched two innings, with Prada retiring all six batters faced with four strikeouts.

Friday’s game:  at DSL Orioles2 (8-7), 10:30 am ET, Wilmer Ortega (0-0, 3.24)

DSL Cardinals Red 12 vs. DSL Tigers1 3

A big eighth turned a tie into a rout as the Cardinals Red (7-10) downed the Tigers1, halting a four-game losing skid.

The home team put a nine spot on the board that inning, breaking a 3-3 tie.  The frame featured five free passes, four hits, three wild pitches, a passed ball plus three Tigers hurlers.  The biggest damage was Miguel Marcos’ bases-loaded double that cleared the sacks and it finished with a three-run bomb by Claudio Ramirez.

Ramirez accounted for five runs, going 2-for-4 with a double and home run, two runs scored and four driven in.  The designated hitter was one of three Cardinals Red players with two hits each, along with Marcos and Smith Vargas.  Shortstop Sander Mora led the 12-hit attack with three hits in four at bats, a base-on-balls, two runs scored and an RBI.

Pitching duties were shared primarily by the tandem of Miguel Yedis and Yonael Dominguez.  Yedis went the initial five innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks before Dominguez (W, 1-1) blanked his opponents on two hits and two free passes over three.  Each pitcher hit one batter.  17-year-old Jesus Jaquez walked one in the ninth.

Friday’s game:  at DSL Tigers1 (7-9), 10:30 am ET, Angel Cuenca (2-0, 0.00)

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 19, 2019

photo: Moises Castillo (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

On a rough 1-6 Tuesday across the St. Louis Cardinals system, first place State College won as shortstop Moises Castillo doubled in the lead run and scored an insurance tally in the 10th inning. Memphis was blown out at home again, and Springfield and Palm Beach opened the second half with a trio of defeats. Five Peoria Chiefs appeared in the Midwest League All-Star Game.

Results from games played Tuesday, June 18th.

Las Vegas 12 at Memphis 1

Randy Arozarena (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

Yet another subpar outing by Alex Reyes led to a 12-1 Redbirds drubbing by Las Vegas (40-32) and the visitors’ four-game sweep over the Redbirds (29-43), during which Memphis was outscored, 46 to 19.

Reyes (L, 1-3) struck out nine over five frames but surrendered 10 hits and three walks generating six runs.  The right-hander threw 95 pitches, 59 for strikes, including a wild pitch. His Memphis ERA is now 7.67.

Chris Ellis, the first of three Memphis relievers, gave up a run on two hits and three free passes in 1 2/3.  Chasen Shreve retired all four batters faced, leaving Ellis’ last runner aboard.  But Chris Beck surrendered a grand slam, part of the four hits and two walks he allowed.

The home team’s offense managed nine hits but went a dismal 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 10 on base.  Randy Arozarena and Conner Capel each had two hits. Arozarena scored his team’s only run and Capel’s double accounted for the Redbirds’ only extra-base hit.  Defensively, Arozarena was credited with an outfield assist at home.

Wednesday’s game:  off

Springfield 2 at Midland 4

Justin Toerner (Palm Beach Cardinals)

Springfield (0-1) kicked off its second half with a 4-2 loss at Midland, evening the series at one game each with one on tap.  The defeat snapped the S-Cards’ five-game winning streak.

Johan Oviedo (L, 1-4) struck out nine in five innings but allowed four runs on nine hits and a free pass.  Bryan Dobzanski tossed two frames of shutout ball before Roel Ramirez faced the minimum in the ninth.

The visitors garnered six hits with Dylan Carlson and Justin Toerner producing all of the results.  Carlson singled and doubled in five at bats and scored both runs.  The leadoff hitter was driven in twice by Toerner, who went 1-for-3 with an RBI groundout.

Wednesday’s game:  at Midland (1-0) (OAK), 6:30 pm CT, Angel Rondon (2-0, 3.31)

Jupiter 5 at Palm Beach 3 (7) – Game 1
Jupiter 4 at Palm Beach 2 (7) – Game 2

Ramon Santos (St. Louis Cardinals)

Palm Beach (0-2) opened the second half of its 2019 season with a double-header loss to Jupiter, 5-3 and 4-2.

In the opener, the Beach Birds held a 3-2 lead through five but Mitchell Osnowitz (L, 1-3) (BS, 1) yielded three runs including two home runs comprising two of the three hits and two walks issued in 1 2/3 innings.  C.J. Saylor retired his only batter to leave a runner aboard.

Starter Griffin Roberts permitted a two-run first via a hit batsman, RBI double and sac fly but settled down to limit the Hammerheads to two more hits plus a free pass over the next four innings.  The righty plunked two batters.

The home team’s seven hits were scattered among seven players with the youngsters at the bottom of the order doing the most damage.  Francisco Hernandez, Luis Montano and Franklin Soto – all fresh from the GCL roster – each doubled once in three at bats.  Hernandez and Montano both knocked in one while Hernandez and Soto scored a run apiece.

Nick Plummer (Paul Ivice/The Cardinal Nation)

The PB-Cards trailed the entire way in the nightcap.  Kyle Leahy’s Florida State League debut lasted just three innings, as the righty yielded three runs, two earned, on seven hits.  Leahy (L, 0-1) did not walk a batter and threw 47 of his 70 pitches for strikes.

Zach Prendergast pitched the fourth and fifth, allowing a tally on two hits and a base-on-balls.  Ramon Santos tossed two one-two-three frames.

Left fielder Nick Plummer reached base three times, going 2-for-2 with a walk, double and one knocked in.  The only other Beach Bird with more than one of the team’s seven hits was catcher Julio Rodriguez, who singled twice in four at bats, touching home once.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Jupiter (2-0) (MIA), 6:30 pm ET, Perry DellaValle (2-3, 2.51)

Peoria – off – MWL West All-Stars 3 at East 3

Delvin Perez (Peoria Chiefs)

The 2019 Midwest League All-Star Game took place Tuesday evening at Four Winds Field in South Bend, Indiana, home of the South Bend Cubs.

The contest ended regulation with a 3-3 tie, triggering a sudden death Home Run Derby which was won by the East squad after Chris Betts (TB) out blasted the West’s Blaze Alexander (ARI), two long balls to one. (Betts had also won the individual Home Run Derby on Monday.)

The Chiefs’ Brady Whalen and Nolan Gorman were starters for the West, batting seventh and third, respectively.  While Whalen was hitless in two at bats, Gorman began the fourth by working a free pass after flying out to center in his first at bat.  The third baseman scored after Jerar Encarnacion (MIA) went yard, closing the gap to 3-2.

Whalen and Gorman departed during the West’s wholesale defensive substitutions in the bottom of the fifth.  Reserve Delvin Perez took over at second at that point and went 0-for-2 but manufactured a run all on his own after reaching via a force out in the eighth.  Perez ended up at second on the play due to a throwing error, stole third and scored when a throw to third by the East’s catcher went awry.

Peoria’s Diego Cordero, who was originally named to the West squad, was not available after being promoted to Palm Beach.  The righty was replaced on the roster by Edgar Escobar who tossed a one-two-three seventh with two strikeouts. The final Peoria All-Star, Alvaro Seijas, allowed a walk and fanned one in the ninth.

Wednesday’s game:  Off

State College 4 at Williamsport 2 (10)

Moises Castillo (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

Back-to-back 10th-inning doubles catapulted the Spikes over the Crosscutters, 4-2, in the first of the two teams’ three-game away-and-home series.  State College (4-1) leads the Pinckney Division, a game in front of Mahoning Valley (CLE).

Moises Castillo’s second double of the game and of the young season drove in Edwin Figuera, who began the 10th at second and broke a 2-2 tie.  Carlos Soto doubled home Castillo for the insurance run.  Both hits came with two away.

After a less than stellar stint with Class-A Peoria to begin the season, Jacob Schlesener is regrouping at State College.  The lefty blanked Williamsport on two hits and two walks over five innings with eight strikeouts.

But Junior Gonzalez (BS, 1) surrendered two tallies in his second inning of work, knotting the contest at two all.  Eli Kraus (W, 1-1) tossed two scoreless innings before handing the ball off to Fabian Blanco, who hit his first batter then struck out his next three opponents for his second save.

The Spikes generated seven hits with Dariel Gomez joining Castillo and Soto with two hits apiece.  Gomez went 2-for-4 with a solo blast while Castillo’s two doubles in five at bats plated two.  Soto singled and doubled in four at bats with a walk and the aforementioned RBI.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Williamsport (2-3) (PHI), 7:05 pm ET, Inohan Paniagua (0-0, 5.79)

Johnson City vs. Pulaski – postponed

Johnson City’s season and home opener versus Pulaski was postponed due to wet grounds.  The contest has been rescheduled as part of a double-header consisting of two seven-inning contests on Wednesday, June 19th.

Wednesday’s games:  vs. Pulaski (0-0) (NYY).  Game one – 5:00 pm ET, TBA/TBA

DSL Cardinals Blue 4 at DSL Phillies Red 5 (10)

Four unearned runs allowed proved to be the difference maker as the Cardinals Blue suffered a 5-4 walk-off loss to the Phillies Red in 10 innings. With the defeat, the C-Blue (8-4) fell a game in back of the Phillies Red and Rockies in the South Division.

Three of the unearned scores were charged to starter Luis Ortiz, who gave up a run in the fourth plus two more then next inning.  The native of San Pedro de Macoris permitted five hits and a free pass in 4 2/3 frames.

Dionys Rodriguez recorded the fifth’s last out but not before allowing Ortiz’ last runner to cross home.  Rodriguez gave up two hits and a base-on-balls resulting in one tally of his own while retiring four.  William Miranda tossed two clean innings but Nelson Prada (L, 2-1) allowed an unearned run in his second inning on the bump.

The Cardinals Blue banged out nine hits with right fielder Gustavo A. Rodriguez and second baseman Elvin De Jesus both going 2-for-5. Rodriguez doubled twice with a run scored and RBI.  The final C-Blue with more than one hit was catcher Jose Zapata, who singled twice in four at bats with one driven in.  On the base paths, De Jesus was one of three Cardinals Blue to successfully steal a base.

Wednesday’s games:  vs/at DSL Twins (6-7), 10:30 am ET, Gustavo J. Rodriguez (0-0, 1.00)/TBA

DSL Brewers 8 at DSL Cardinals Red 6

Diowill Burgos

The Cardinals Red could not hold a 4-2 lead through six, and went on to drop an 8-6 decision to the DSL Brewers.  It was the third straight loss for the C-Red (6-9), who are in a three-way tie for sixth with the Brewers and Rangers2, four games behind the D-backs2 and Phillies White in the San Pedro Division.

Four of the visitors’ final six scores were unearned due to two of the Cardinals Red’s three miscues.  Starter Edgar Manzo held his opponents to two tallies on seven hits including a solo shot in his fifth and final inning of work.  The 18-year-old Mexico native struck out nine and did not issue a free pass.

But Hansel Rincon was saddled with two unearned runs on three hits and a base-on-balls over two innings.  Two of the four tallies allowed by Augusto Calderon (L, 0-2) (BS, 2) in 1 1/3 frames were unearned, the righty yielding two hits, two walks and plunking two batters.  Larimel Soriano recorded the ninth’s final two outs, stranding an inherited runner.

Right fielder Diowill Burgos led the team’s 11-hit effort, going 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles, a run scored and three RBI.  It was the third consecutive multi-hit performance for the 18-year-old and fourth in his last five games.

Third baseman Luis Andujar and first baseman Roblin Heredia had two hits apiece in four and five at bats, respectively.  Andujar doubled twice with two knocked in while Heredia smashed his first triple, touched home twice and drove in one.  Defensively, Burgos, Heredia and second baseman Sander Mora each committed a bobble.

Wednesday’s game:  at DSL Brewers (6-9), 10:30 am ET, tandem – Miguel Yedis (0-0, 10.38)/Yonael Dominguez (0-1, 12.60)

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 17, 2019

photo: Austin Warner (Springfield Cardinals FANatic Photos)

On a light 2-1 Sunday across the St. Louis Cardinals system, Player of the Day Austin Warner pitched Springfield to its fourth straight win. Peoria headed into the All-Star break on a positive note, but Memphis pitching yielded 11 runs. State College’s game was suspended.

Results from games played Sunday, June 16th.

Las Vegas 11 at Memphis 8

Randy Arozarena (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The Redbirds put together two game-tying rallies only to fall to the Aviators, 11-8.  Memphis (29-41) has lost the first two of their four-game home set versus Las Vegas.

Jake Woodford put his team in a 7-1 hole after three but a six-run sixth by the Memphis offense tied the score in the right-hander’s final inning of work.  Woodford yielded 10 hits and a free pass.

Chasen Shreve gave the Aviators their second lead the next frame by permitting a tally on two hits but Hunter Cervenka kept the deficit to a single score with a one-two-three eighth that included two strikeouts.  The home team re-knotted the game at 8-8 heading into the ninth but Chris Beck (L, 0-5) allowed three runs on four hits and a walk for the loss.

Randy Arozarena garnered three of Memphis’ 11 hits, going 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles, touched home once and drove in one.  Conner Capel is making the most of his recent call up from Double-A with his second multi-hit performance in three Triple-A games.  The left fielder doubled twice in four at bats, scored one and knocked in another.  A third recent arrival from Springfield, Kramer Robertson, also went 2-for-4 and crossed home twice with an RBI. John Nogowski singled and doubled in five at bats with a run scored and two driven in.

Monday’s game:  vs. Las Vegas (38-32) (OAK), 6:35 pm CT, Evan Kruczynski (1-1, 6.21)

Springfield 8 vs. Corpus Christi 6

Austin Warner (Springfield Cardinals FANatic Photos)

The S-Cards withstood a late rally to top the Hooks, 8-6, for a home series sweep.  Springfield (29-40) has won four straight, including three over Corpus Christi (32-36) (HOU), and six of their last seven.  The Hooks’ loss eliminated them from first-half postseason contention in the South Division.

Player of the Day Austin Warner (W, 4-5) allowed five hits over the first two frames resulting in two runs then retired his next 15 Hooks before jamming the sacks full on a hit and two walks with two away in the seventh.  The southpaw struck out six with 10 ground- and two fly-ball outs.

A trio of Springfield relievers took over from that point with mixed results.  Jacob Patterson retired his only batter via a swinging K, thus stranding three inherited runners.  But Connor Jones was tagged for three tallies on four hits in the eighth and Kodi Whitley permitted a run on a triple and ground out before recording his second save.

The home team featured a balanced offense in which eight of nine starters gathered at least one of the team’s 13 hits.  Chris Chinea took the lead, going 3-for-5 with a double and two-run long ball that was two of his four knocked in.  Three S-Cards had two hits apiece:  Rayder Ascanio, Alberto Triunfel and Jose Martinez.  Ascanio singled and doubled in four at bats with a double, touched home twice and drove in one while the latter two each went 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored. Triunfel added an RBI.

Monday’s game:  at Midland (34-34) (OAK), 6:30 pm CT, TBA

Palm Beach – off

Coming off the Florida State League All-Star break, the high-A Cardinals will begin their second half at home Monday evening at Roger Dean Stadium.

Monday’s game:  vs. Jupiter (MIA), 6:30 pm ET, TBA

Peoria 7 vs. Burlington 2

Juan Yepez (Peoria Chiefs)

Juan Yepez’ perfect day at the plate led Peoria (30-39) to a 7-2 victory over Burlington (39-31) (LAA) in the rubber game of the three-game series.

Yepez spearheaded a 13-hit attack, going 3-for-3 with a walk, two doubles and two runs scored out of the three hole.  Right fielder Brandon Benson also generated a three-hit performance including a solo bomb in four at bats that was one of his two RBI.  The other two Chiefs with more than one hit are catcher Alexis Wilson and third baseman Josh Shaw.  Wilson went 2-for-3 with a run scored and sac fly.

Making his third start in 14 appearances, Franyel Casadilla (W, 3-1) held the second-place Bees to two runs on four hits and no walks over five innings.  The Venezuelan native struck out five.  Sebastian Tabata and Evan Sisk each tossed two scoreless frames. Tabata allowed two hits and Sisk one.

Monday’s game:  Off for the Midwest League All-Star Break

State College at Auburn – suspended

Andrew Warner (Bret Jacomet photo)

The wild start of the first of a two-game road series at Auburn was suspended due to rain with two gone in the visitors half of the second, a runner at second and the Spikes up 6-5. The contest will be resumed as part of a makeshift doubleheader on Monday at 11:00 a.m., with the completion of the suspended game at nine innings, followed by the regular game, shortened to seven innings.

The Doubledays put up a five spot off lefty Nathanael Heredia, whose professional debut lasted just two outs.  The 18-year-old Dominican yielded consecutive balks to bring in the first tally.  After surrendering a solo shot, Heredia interspersed three walks with a wild pitch, swinging K and fly out, bringing about his departure.

Junior Gonzalez was charged with preventing further damage, but instead fell prey to a bases-clearing throwing error by third baseman Luis Flores that generated three unearned runs.  Gonzalez recorded a line out to center to finish the inning.

State College (1-1) answered with six runs and the offense was still batting in the top of the second when the contest was suspended.  The visitors generated doubles by Andrew Warner and Matt Duce added to Stanley Espinal’s lead-off single plus a free pass to Flores and benefited as well from three straight fielding errors by Auburn’s infield.  Warner’s three-run double was the final play before the game was called.

Monday’s games:  at Auburn (0-1) (WSH), 11:00 am ET, Enmanuel Solano (league debut)/Hector Soto (US debut)

DSL Cardinals Blue – off

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 14, 2019

photo: Zach Kirtley (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

On the 3-2 Thursday across the St. Louis Cardinals system, Player of the Day Zach Kirtley’s third hit drove in Springfield’s walkoff score in the 11th inning. Both DSL teams won, Memphis lost a slugfest and Peoria dropped a pitchers’ duel.

Results from games played Thursday, June 13th.

Salt Lake 13 at Memphis 11

Randy Arozarena (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

A 13-hit offensive explosion was not enough to overcome Alex Reyes’ subpar outing as the Redbirds (28-39) were clipped by Salt Lake, evening the series at one game apiece with one to play.

The fireworks included three home runs accounting for six of Memphis’ tallies.  Adolis Garcia launched one during his 3-for-4 effort, a solo bomb to go with a double, three runs scored and one driven in.  Kramer Robertson went yard with two runners aboard while Randy Arozarena hit one out with one on.

Robertson and Arozarena were two of four Memphis players with two hits apiece, joining Evan Mendoza and Rangel Ravelo.  Arozarena drove in four in five at bats while Robertson doubled once, touched home three times and knocked in five in four at bats.

It took six Redbirds pitchers to navigate nine frames, starting with Reyes, who took 69 pitches to cover just three innings.  Three of the four scores surrendered during that span were generated by one long ball that was one of his two hits and four walks allowed.

Chris Ellis served up a solo bomb during his two-inning stint and Tommy Layne tossed a clean sixth as the only Memphis hurler to not be scored upon.  Jesus Cruz (BS, 3) was tagged for a three-run home run comprising three of the five runs he allowed in just 1/3 of an inning.  Chasen Shreve recorded the seventh’s last two outs but not before yielding a run on three hits.  Chris Beck (L, 0-4) kept the Bees at bay in the eighth but served up a two-run long ball the next inning.

Friday’s game:  vs. Salt Lake (30-35) (LAA), 7:05 pm CT, Anthony Shew (1-2, 4.94)

Springfield 9 vs. Midland 8 (11)

Zach Kirtley (State College Spiles

Zach Kirtley’s 11th-inning single drove in the winning tally as Springfield (26-40) walked off with a 9-8 victory over Midland (32-33) in the rubber game of the three-game series at Hammons Field.

Kirtley’s third hit of the game knocked in Conner Capel after the latter doubled home Jose Godoy to knot the score at 8-8.  Kirtley added a walk and run scored to his RBI in four at bats while Capel and Brian O’Keefe each went 2-for-5. Capel crossed home twice with one driven in.  All nine starters had at least one of the team’s 13 hits, including Godoy. who launched a three-run shot. Left fielder Capel notched an outfield assist at home.

Junior Fernandez struck out five over the game’s final three frames for his first Double-A win.  The only mark against the righty was an unearned run on a wild pitch and fielder’s choice.

Johan Oviedo went the initial five innings, fanning nine and permitting two runs on four hits and five free passes.  Jacob Patterson (BS, 1) was charged with four tallies on four hits, including a three-run long ball, and a walk in two frames.  The run scored against Kodi Whitley (BS, 2) allowed Midland to tie the game at seven all.

Friday’s game:  vs. Corpus Christi (32-33) (HOU), 7:10 pm CT, Angel Rondon (1-0, 3.38)

Palm Beach “at” Jupiter – cancelled

Thursday’s contest between Palm Beach and Jupiter was rained out and will not be rescheduled since it was the last game of the season’s first half. After leading the division for a considerable period, the Beach Birds stumbled late and the 35-29 club finished three games behind division champion Fort Myers (MIN).

Friday’s game:  Off

Peoria 1 at Clinton 3

Diego Cordero (Peoria Chiefs)

A three-run sixth sent Peoria (28-38) to a 3-1 defeat by Clinton (33-33) in the decisive third game of the road series.

Diego Cordero (L, 2-6) held the LumberKings to two hits and three walks over five scoreless frames but exited after permitting a walk, single and RBI double while recording one out the next inning.  Edgar Escobar allowed two hits and a free pass during his 2 2/3-inning stint and let both inherited runners score.

The Chiefs did not get on the board until the ninth when the opposing pitcher walked the bases full.  A 5-4 force out brought Juan Yepez across for Peoria’s only tally.  Brendan Donovan went 2-for-3 with two free passes and was the only Chief with more than one of the team’s seven hits.

Friday’s game:  vs. Burlington (38-29) (LAA), 6:35 pm CT, Colin Schmid (3-2, 3.62)

State College Spikes at Williamsport

Friday’s game:  at Williamsport (0-0) (PHI), 7:05 pm ET, TBA

State College Spikes Ready for 2019 Opener

DSL Cardinals Blue 5 at DSL Angels 4

Second baseman Erik Pena’s ninth-inning double lifted the Cardinals Blue (6-2) over the DSL Angels, 5-4, in a come-from-behind victory.

The double drove in Darlin Moquete and Luis Rodriguez, flipping a 4-3 disadvantage into a 5-4 lead.  Moquete pinch ran for Jose Rodriguez who worked a free pass to kick off the inning while Rodriguez reached on a fielder’s choice that did not get anyone out.

Pena was one of three C-Blue players going 2-for-4 along with centerfielder Hansel Otamendi and designated hitter Fernando Diaz.  Both Otamendi and Diaz drew a walk and touched home once while Diaz doubled once with an RBI.  Both Pena and Diaz were caught stealing in their only attempt and Diaz was also picked off first.

Right-hander Gustavo J. Rodriguez pitched a strong five-inning outing, holding the Dominican Angels (4-6) to a single tally on two hits, two base-on-balls and a sac fly.  Both free passes and one of his hits came in his final inning of work.

The Venezuelan exited with his team holding a 3-1 lead but a fielding error by shortstop Darlyn Del Villar to start the seventh resulted in three runs, two earned, charged to Benjamin Arias (BS, 2) who allowed four hits and a walk in one plus frames.

Victor Villanueva inherited a two in scoring position with none out and did an excellent job of limiting the damage by retiring all three batters faced.  One of those outs, however, was a sac fly that brought a run across.  Righty William Miranda (W, 1-0) tossed a clean eighth but got the hook after jamming the sacks full with two gone the next inning.  Cristofer Zapata notched a swinging K for his second save.

Friday’s game:  vs. DSL Phillies Red (7-3), 10:30 am ET, Yordy Richard (0-0, 2.25)

DSL Cardinals Red 4 vs. DSL Mets2 2

A trio of C-Red hurlers combined on a two-hitter as the Cardinals Red (5-6) downed the Mets2, 4-2.

Angel Cuenca (W, 2-0) faced only two batters over the minimum during his six impressive frames, blanking his opponents on a hit and two walks.  The 17-year-old has yet to allow a run in 15 innings over three starts and has allowed just six hits and five free passes overall.

Ramon Fernandez issued two free passes during his two frames on the bump while matching Cuenca’s three strikeouts.  Hector De Los Santos yielded two runs on a hit and three walks in the ninth.

Three Cardinals Red players each had two of the team’s seven hits:  shortstop Sander Mora, second baseman Albert Inoa and third baseman Luis Andujar.  Mora and Inoa, the two and three bats, both went 2-for-4 with a double, Mora crossing home twice and Inoa scoring one and driving in another.  Number six hitter Andujar singled twice in four at bats with an RBI.

Friday’s game:  at DSL Mets2 (6-5), 10:30 am ET, Ludwin Jimenez (1-0, 3.60)

Coming off a seven-game West Coast swing in which they went 4-3, Memphis (27-38) heads back to AutoZone Park for a seven-game home stand against Salt Lake and Las Vegas (OAK).

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Salt Lake (29-34) (LAA), 7:05 pm CT, Evan Kruczynski (1-1, 6.00)

Springfield 4 vs. Midland 1

Austin Warner (Springfield Cardinals FANatic Photos)

A trio of S-Cards hurlers combined for 16 strikeouts as Springfield (25-39) downed Midland, 4-1, in the series opener at Hammons Field.

Co-Player of the Day Austin Warner (W, 3-5) notched 10 of them during his six innings on the bump, scattering six hits and a walk and limiting the RockHounds to a run.  That included a rare four punchout inning. The lefty threw 70 of his 99 pitches for strikes.

Kodi Whitley retired all six batters faced, striking out four, and Junior Fernandez fanned two in his one-two-three ninth for his fourth save.

A balanced offensive effort featured seven of nine Springfield players gathering at least one of the squad’s 10 hits.  Irving Lopez, Yariel Gonzalez and Chris Chinea had two hits apiece, Lopez in two at bats and the latter two in four.  Both Lopez and Chinea went yard with the bases empty, Lopez adding a triple, two runs scored and an RBI with Chinea touching home once with a walk and one knocked in.  Lopez reached base once via a hit batsman.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Midland (31-32) (OAK), 11:10 am CT, RHP Roel Ramirez (1-1, 5.54) (updated)

Palm Beach 2 “at” Jupiter 0 (5)

Chase Pinder (Andrew Miller/Palm Beach Cardinals)

Two unearned tallies provided the margin of victory as the Beach Birds slipped past the Hammerheads, 2-0, in a contest that was called due to rain with one gone in the visitor’s half of the sixth.  With Fort Myers’ win, however, third-place Palm Beach (35-28) was eliminated in the playoff race for the first-half of the season.

Both runs were generated in the fourth after Chase Pinder opened with a single to right.  A throwing error by Jupiter’s third baseman on Julio Rodriguez’ grounder advanced Pinder to third, putting the left fielder in position to score on Luken Baker’s ground out.  A two-out single by Scott Hurst drove in Rodriguez for the final score.

Alex Fagalde tossed the first three frames, yielding three hits and a walk on 71 pitches, 42 of them strikes.  The righty threw one wild pitch.  Ramon Santos and Edgar Gonzalez each hurled a one-two-three inning, with Santos picking up his first win and Gonzalez his first save.

Wednesday’s game:  at Jupiter (20-42) (MIA), 6:30 pm ET, Griffin Roberts (0-0, 8.10)

Peoria 1 at Clinton 0

Kyle Leahy (Peoria Chiefs)

Kyle Leahy’s eight-inning gem was key in Peoria’s (26-36) tight 1-0 victory over Clinton in the first of their three-game series.

Leahy (W, 4-4), our co-Player of the Day, blanked the LumberKings on five hits with eight strikeouts, extending his scoreless innings streak to 21 over four games.  The tall righty did not issue a free pass and threw 98 pitches, 67 for strikes.  Cole Aker faced the minimum in the ninth, fanning two, for his second save.

The pitching duel remained scoreless until the sixth when Brady Whalen doubled home Brendan Donovan, who had kicked off the inning with a walk.  Whalen’s two-bagger was one of only three hits for the Chiefs.

Wednesday’s game:  at Clinton (31-33) (MIA), 6:30 pm CT, Alvaro Seijas (4-4, 3.06)

DSL Cardinals Blue 5 vs. DSL Orioles2 4

A blown save was followed by a walk-off victory as the Cardinals Blue (5-2) edged the Orioles2, 5-4.

The back-and-forth battle featured four lead changes plus two ties and four miscues, three by the visitors, which led to three unearned tallies.  Designated hitter Diego Velasquez was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.  The 17-year-old was plunked once.  The only other C-Blue player with more than one of the team’s nine hits was shortstop Darlyn Del Villar, who went 3-for-5 with a double, run scored and one driven in out of the three hole.

Making his first professional start after one relief appearance, 17-year-old Engels Martinez allowed two runs on three hits and a base-on-balls over four innings with four strikeouts.  Tandem mate Luis Ortiz held the Orioles2 (2-5) to an unearned score on three hits while matching Martinez’ four K’s.  Luis Tena (W, 2-0) (BS, 2) yielded a solo shot tying the game at four all in the top of the ninth but was the pitcher of record when Del Villar doubled and scored on a fielding error on a subsequent play for the walk-off win.

Wednesday’s game:  Off

DSL Cardinals Red 4 at DSL Cubs2 6

Lack of timely hitting resulted in the Cardinals Red (4-5) falling to the DSL Cubs2, 6-4.

The C-Red had plentiful opportunities with nine hits and nine free passes but went 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 11 on base.  The only Cardinals Red player with a multi-hit performance was left fielder Claudio Ramirez, who went 3-for-4 with a double and one driven in.  Defensively, he was credited with an assist at home.

Right-hander Edgar Manzo limited his opponents to an unearned run on two hits and four walks in four innings.  Luis Garcia retired five batters but allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits and two free passes.

Augusto Calderon (L, 0-1) recorded the sixth’s final out, stranding two inherited runners, but was charged with three tallies on a hit and three walks the next frame.  Larimel Soriano tossed the final 1 1/3 innings, giving up two and a walk while permitting one of Calderon’s runners to score.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. DSL Cubs2 (4-5), 10:30 AM ET, Miguel Yedis (0-0, 0.00)

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 10, 2019

photo: Randy Arozarena (Springfield Cardinals FANatic Photos)

On a 3-1 Sunday across the St. Louis Cardinals system, Players of the Day Randy Arozarena, Johan Mieses and Zach Kirtley powered Springfield to a road win. Memphis won and Peoria split a twin bill.

Results from games played Sunday, June 9th.

Memphis 7 at Reno 4

Genesis Cabrera (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The Redbirds flew past the Aces on Sunday, 7-4, for a two-games-to-one lead in the four-game series.  Despite going 4-6 over their last 10 games, Memphis (27-37) has gained two games on first-place Iowa (CHC). The Cubs have a seven-game lead while in the midst of a six-game losing streak.

The visitors produced a balanced offensive attack with seven Redbirds having at least one of the team’s 14 hits and five players generating a multi-hit performance.  Rangel Ravelo and Adolis Garcia both went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI.  Ravelo doubled once.  Edmundo Sosa, Drew Robinson and Kramer Robertson had two hits apiece.

Genesis Cabrera’s (W, 3-3) return to the Memphis rotation was a successful one.  The 22-year-old struck out eight in five frames, scattering six hits and three free passes resulting in a single tally.  But it did take Cabrera 96 pitches to navigate the five innings and he threw 56 of his pitches for strikes.

Anthony Shew retired eight batters (2 2/3 innings) while permitting two tallies on three hits and two walks.  Chris Beck minimized the damage to Shew by stranding two of three inherited runners but allowed a run on two hits and two base-on-balls over 1 1/3 frames.

Monday’s game:  at Reno (27-36) (ARI), 9:05 pm CT, Jake Woodford (4-2, 3.06)

Springfield 10 at Northwest Arkansas 2

Johan Mieses (Memphis Redbirds)

The S-Cards trounced the Naturals, 10-2, to salvage the fourth and final game of the series.  Springfield (24-39) has been eliminated from play-off contention for the first half of the season.

The visitors translated 13 hits and two miscues by the Naturals into 10 tallies, six earned.  Three Springfield players each generated three-hit performances thus earning all of them the Player of the Day nod:  Randy Arozarena, Johan Mieses and Zach Kirtley.  Arozarena maximized his results with five runs accounted for by going 3-for-4 with a double, walk, two runs scored and three driven in.  Mieses also went 3-for-4 with a double but added a solo shot that was one of his three RBI and Kirtley doubled three times in five at bats, crossed home twice and knocked in one.

Angel Rondon (W, 1-0) tossed a strong five-inning effort, striking out seven with a tally allowed on four hits and two walks.  Connor Jones faced the minimum in the sixth, fanning two before handing the ball off to Bryan Dobzanski.  In his Springfield debut, Dobzanski was tagged for a run on two hits and a free pass over 1 2/3 frames and Junior Fernandez, who entered the contest with his team up 5-2, recorded the last four outs for his third save.

Monday’s game: Off

Palm Beach vs.  Charlotte – cancelled

The third and final game of the series between third-place Palm Beach (34-27) and fourth-place Charlotte (32-30) (TB) was cancelled due to inclement weather, leaving the series split at one game each.  Since the two teams do not meet again in the first half, the game will not be rescheduled.

Just ahead, the PB-Cards will finish the first-half of the season with a four-game set versus facility mate Jupiter while the two teams ahead of them both play on the road.  First-place Fort Myers (36-26) (MIN) travels to Tampa ((27-35) (NYY) to take on the Tarpons in a five-game series while Bradenton (35-27) (PIT) plays four games at Charlotte.  Only 1 ½ games separate the three squads with just one team qualifying for the playoffs.

Monday’s game:  ‘at’ sixth-place Jupiter (19-41) (MIA), 6:30 pm ET, Perry DellaValle (2-3, 3.90)

Cedar Rapids 7 at Peoria 2 (7) – Game 1
Peoria 2 vs. Cedar Rapids 1 (7) – Game 2

Delvin Perez (Peoria Chiefs)

The Chiefs split a home double-header with the Kernels, dropping Game, 7-2, but claiming the second game, 2-1.  Peoria (27-35) trails in the five-game set, one game to three and the loss in the opener combined with a win by first-place Quad Cities (HOU) eliminated the Chiefs from first-half post-season contention.

The opening contest was tight until the Kernels’ four-run sixth busted it wide open.  Starter Colin Schmid took the loss, his second in five decisions, by giving up two runs on six hits and four free passes in 4 1/3.  The lefty struck out five.

Freddy Pacheco retired both batters faced to end the fifth but not before allowing one of three inherited runners to score.  Cedar Rapids’ offensive explosion occurred with Sebastian Tabata on the bump, as the righty surrendered four tallies on two hits, three walks and a hit batsman in 1/3 of an inning.  Evan Sisk recorded five outs and allowed a run on a hit, base-on-balls and plunked batter (the same player Tabata hit).

The Chiefs’ offense consisted of six hits, only one of which went for extra bases.  Delvin Perez went 2-for-4 out of the two hole, the only Peoria player with more than one hit.  Alexis Wilson singled and scored his team’s initial run which was unearned due to a throwing error and wild pitch.  Brendan Donovan worked a base-on-balls to kick off the seventh and eventually scored on Brady Whalen’s RBI single to right.

Franyel Casadilla (Peoria Chiefs)

The finale was a low-scoring affair in which Franyel Casadilla (W, 2-1) held Cedar Rapids to solo shot over six plus innings.  The right-hander gave up five hits in all and did not issue a free pass while throwing 48 of his 70 pitches for strikes.  Cole Aker came into a two-on-and-none out jam then issued a one-out free pass to jam the sacks full.  But the Tennessee native escaped on a force at home and swinging K that ended the game.

Peoria made the most of their four hits.  Ivan Herrera beat out a grounder to third to begin the fifth, his second hit of the game, then raced to third on a double by Bryce Denton.  Juan Yepez drove one deep enough to left to score Herrera to put the Chiefs up 1-0 after five.

But the Kernels tied the game up at 1-1 at the sixth’s midpoint, leaving the game up to Delvin Perez and Brady Whalen in the bottom of the frame.  Perez worked a one-out walk, stole second and scored the winning tally on Whalen’s single up the middle.

Monday’s game: vs.  Cedar Rapids (33-30) (MIN), 11:05 am CT, Michael Brettell (2-2, 3.90)

DSL Cardinals Blue – off

The Dominican Summer League does not play on Sundays.

Monday’s game:  First-place DSL Cardinals Blue (4-1) vs.  DSL Rockies (5-2), 10:30 am ET, Reinys Portillo (0-0, 4.50)

DSL Cardinals Red – off

Monday’s game:  Third-place DSL Cardinals Red (4-3) at first-place DSL Phillies White (6-1), 10:30 am ET, Diorys Guerrero (0-0, 7.36)

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 7, 2019

photo: Edmundo Sosa (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

Results from games played Thursday, June 6th.

Memphis 7 at Tacoma 0

Harold Arauz (Memphis Redbirds)

The Redbirds used five late-inning runs to solidify their 7-0 blanking of Tacoma (30-31) (SEA) in the decisive third game of the away set.  It was the first series win for Memphis (25-36) since taking three of four from Nashville May 11th through 14th and only the second road series victory of season.

The visitors began the game with a first-inning tally and added another in the fifth before breaking it wide open with a three-run seventh plus two-run eighth.  Memphis banged out 11 hits, led by co-Player of the Day Edmundo Sosa, who finished a single shy of the cycle.  The shortstop went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and solo shot comprising one of his three runs scored.

Hitting right behind Sosa in the nine hole, catcher Jose Godoy also went 3-for-4, albeit with fewer results, a run scored and an RBI.  Drew Robinson was the final Memphis player with a multi-hit performance, singling and doubling in five at bats with two driven in.  Lane Thomas’ only hit in four at bats was a home run with the bases empty.

Daniel Ponce de Leon had a brief three-inning, 53-pitch start, giving up a hit and three free passes.  This abbreviated outing perhaps keeps him in contention for pitching on Monday for St. Louis. Called up from Springfield apparently for the purpose of following Ponce de Leon, co-Player of the Day Harold Arauz delivered. Arauz (W, 3-0) tossed a stellar six shutout frames, allowing five hits and a walk on 79 pitches, 49 for strikes.

Friday’s game:  at Reno (26-34) (ARI), 9:05 pm CT, Evan Kruczynski (0-1, 6.63)

Springfield at Northwest Arkansas – postponed

The series opener for Springfield (23-36) at Northwest Arkansas was rained out.  The contest has been rescheduled as part of a twin bill on Friday, June 7th.

Friday’s game:  at Northwest Arkansas (25-33) (KC).  Game one: 4:30 pm CT, Jacob Patterson (4-3, 4.76)/Williams Perez, (6-2, 4.84)

Lakeland 4 at Palm Beach 1

Edgar Gonzalez (Palm Beach Cardinals)

Three late tallies sent the Beach Birds to a 4-1 home defeat to the Flying Tigers, their third loss in the recently completed four-game set.  The defeat dropped Palm Beach (33-26) a game behind division leaders Bradenton (PIT) and Fort Myers (MIN).

The PB-Cards’ offense managed an anemic three hits, with two in the sixth contributing to their only run.  Justin Toerner bunted for a base hit and scored on Yariel Gonzalez’ two-out double to right.

That knotted the game at 1-1 but the tie lasted only until the next inning when reliever Zach Prendergast (L, 1-1) issued a free pass with one away.  Ramon Santos retired the next five batters but not before giving up two runs on four hits, two walks and three wild pitches.  That left Prendergast with a final line of one tally yielded on two hits and a base-on-balls in 1 1/3 innings.

Edgar Gonzalez used eight strikeouts to minimize the threat of three hits and four walks allowed in five innings, permitting one run.  At the other end of the game, C.J. Saylor pitched a one-two-three ninth.

Friday’s game:  vs. Charlotte (31-29) (TB), 6:30 pm ET, TBA

Peoria 0 “at” Quad Cities 1

Kyle Leahy (Peoria Chiefs)

A tight pitching duel resulted in the Chiefs’ 1-0 walk-off loss to the River Bandits.  Peoria (26-32) took two of the three-game series with first-place Quad Cities (36-20), a club they trail by 11 games.

The score was knotted at 0-0 until the home half of the ninth when Freddy Pacheco began his second inning of work.  Pacheco (L, 0-2) issued a free pass followed by a run-scoring double that ended the game.

Starter Kyle Leahy tossed an impressive five frames, limiting the River Bandits to two hits and one base-on-balls.  The right-hander has not yielded a score in his last 13 innings covering three starts.  Sebastian Tabata and Franyel Casadilla retired three batters each, with Tabata issuing a free pass and Casadilla permitting a hit.

Brendan Donovan’s single to open the game was the only thing preventing Peoria from being no hit.  Brandon Riley walked the next inning (but was picked off) and the next 23 Chiefs were retired in order.

Friday’s game:  vs. Cedar Rapids (30-29) (MIN), 6:35 pm CT, Alvaro Seijas (4-4, 2.96)

DSL Cardinals Blue 2 at DSL Mets1 1

The Cardinals Blue came out on the right end of a pitching duel as they edged the DSL Mets1, 2-1.  The C-Blue (3-1) now stand atop the South Division, a half-game in front of four teams, including the Mets1.

A quartet of C-Blue hurlers held the Mets1 to a single tally on six hits and four free passes while notching a combined 12 K’s.  16-year-old right-hander Yordy Richard impressed in his first professional start, striking out seven in four frames while allowing a run on three hits and two walks. The tally on his record came in his final inning.

Victor Villanueva was credited with the win with two frames of one-hit ball.  Luis Tena fanned four during his two innings on the bump, giving up two hits before lefty Cristoffer Zapata negotiated around two walks for his first professional save.

Despite the fine pitching efforts of the quartet, the Cardinals Blue trailed until the seventh when the squad combined two of the day’s four hits plus a walk and wild pitch to plate two runs.  Left fielder Leudy Pena got it started with a one-out walk then advanced a base on right fielder Jose Rodriguez’ second single of the game.  The runners moved up a base on a wild pitch, putting Pena in position to score on first baseman Luis Rodriguez’ ground out.  Catcher Diego Velasquez’ infield single to third was sufficient to bring Jose Rodriguez across for the winning tally.

Friday’s game:  vs. DSL Phillies Red (3-2), 10:30 am ET, TBA

DSL D-backs2 6 at DSL Cardinals Red 4

A four-run eighth sent the Cardinals Red to a 6-4 defeat to the D-backs2.  The C-Red (4-1) are in a three-way tie for first in the San Pedro Division with the Mets2 and Phillies White.

Righty reliever Benjamin Arias took both the loss and blown save in just his second professional appearance.  The 17-year-old yielded three runs on two hits, a base-on-balls and a plunked batter in 1 1/3.  All three tallies scored with Augusto Calderon (BS, 1) on the mound.  Calderon permitted an unearned run of his own on two hits and two walks in 1 2/3.

Miguel Yedis acquitted himself well in his first start after 14 relief appearances in 2018.  The righty held his opponents to an unearned run on two hits and a base-on-balls over four innings.  Yedis hit one batter.  Yonael Dominguez gave up a run on three hits and three free passes during his two-inning stint.

Second baseman Albert Inoa spearheaded his team’s eight-hit attack with a perfect 3-for-3 effort.  Inoa touched home twice, worked two free passes and knocked in a run.  The only other Cardinals Red with more than one hit was Diowill Burgos, who singled and doubled in three at bats and added two walks.

Friday’s game:  at DSL D-backs2 (2-3), 10:30 am ET, Angel Cuenca (1-0, 0.00)

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 5, 2019

photo: Juan Yepez (Allison Rhoades/Peoria Chiefs)

On a 3-3 Tuesday across the St. Louis Cardinals, Juan Yepez is the Player of the Day, marking his return to Peoria with two home runs and seven RBI. Memphis broke its 12-game losing streak and the DSL Red won. A dependable Springfield reliever stumbled, Palm Beach lost another close one and the DSL Blue fell in a shootout.

Results from games played Tuesday, June 4th.

Memphis 9 at Tacoma 3

Jake Woodford (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

It took a trip to the West Coast to do it, but the Redbirds finally notched a victory, downing Tacoma 9-3 in the series opener.  The win snapped Memphis’ 12-game losing streak and kicked off a seven-game road swing for third-place Memphis (24-35) which trails Iowa (CHC) by 10 games in the American Northern standings.

The Redbirds banged out 13 hits, led by Adolis Garcia who went 3-for-5 with a double and solo bomb that was part of his two runs scored and three knocked in.  Four Memphis players had two hits apiece:  Tommy Edman, Tyler O’Neill, Lane Thomas and Ramon Urias.  Rangel Ravelo led off the third with his seventh home run of the season.

Jake Woodford tossed seven strong frames in picking up his fourth win in six decisions.  The righty held the Pacific Northern Division leaders to two first-inning runs on five hits and a base-on-balls while striking out six.

Domenic Leone was charged with a run on two hits and a walk with three outs recorded.  Tommy Layne walked one in the ninth.

Wednesday’s game:  at Tacoma (29-30) (SEA), 8:05 pm CT, Anthony Shew (1-1, 3.00)

Springfield 5 at Tulsa 7

Randy Arozarena (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

Three late tallies off organization May Pitcher of the Month Junior Fernandez sent the S-Cards to a 7-5 defeat at Tulsa.  Springfield (23-35) has lost the first two of the three-game series and is now officially eliminated from first-half post-season contention.

Springfield led 5-4 with six outs to go, as Fernandez (L, 0-1) (BS, 1) entered the game.  But the right-hander suffered a rare stumble, giving up three runs on four hits and two free passes.

Angel Rondon started and allowed four tallies on five hits and two walks in 6 2/3.  Two of the four scores against him resulted from a home run.  Will Latcham allowed a hit and walk before recording his sole out, letting one of two of Rondon’s inherited runners score.

The visitors generated six hits with Kramer Robertson the only player with more than one.  The shortstop went 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and two RBI.  Randy Arozarena’s only hit in four at bats was a three-run home run, his third of 2019.

Wednesday’s game:  at Tulsa (31-26) (LAD), 12:05 pm CT, Austin Warner (2-4, 4.21)

Lakeland 3 at Palm Beach 2

Perry DellaValle (Palm Beach Cardinals)

A late rally could not prevent another loss as the Beach Birds were clipped at Roger Dean by the Flying Tigers, 3-2, extending their losing streak to five.  The skid has dropped Palm Beach (32-25) a game off the pace set by co-leaders Bradenton (PIT) and Fort Myers (MIN).

The home team trailed 2-0 at the sixth’s midpoint, but knotted the score at two all after seven.  However, a ninth-inning score against Mitchell Osnowitz (L, 1-2) provided the game’s difference.

Starter Perry DellaValle tossed a strong five-inning effort, with the only mark against him a solo long ball comprising one of his four hits yielded.  The righty issued two free passes and fanned five.

C J Saylor was charged with a run on two hits and a walk in the sixth before handing the ball off to Ronnie Williams.  Williams hurled two scoreless frames, allowing a hit and walk.

Center fielder Chase Pinder took part in both of his team’s scores, going 2-for-5 with a run scored and RBI.  Six Palm Beach players had one hit each.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Lakeland (25-32) (DET), 6:30 pm ET, Alex Fagalde (5-3, 2.31)

Peoria 12 at Quad Cities 5

Juan Yepez (Peoria Chiefs)

The Chiefs opened an unusual road series by trouncing the River Bandits, 12-5.  Peoria (25-31) is in seventh place in the Western Division standings, 11 games in back of Quad Cities (HOU).

The three-game series claimed the ‘unusual’ label when it was transferred from Davenport’s Modern Woodman Park to Dozer Park in Peoria after flood waters blocked access.  Hence the games were moved, with Chiefs visitors for all three contests in their own ballpark.

Peoria fought back against Quad Cities’ three-run first by scoring eight times over the next three frames to lead 8-3 after four.  Player of the Day Juan Yepez swung the hottest bat on a squad generating 13 hits, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a three-run home run and a two-run bomb that was part of his seven driven in.  It was the designated hitter’s 2019 debut.

Yepez, the number six batter, was sandwiched by two Chiefs garnering three hits each in five at bats:  Brady Whalen and Bryce Denton.  Whalen crossed home three times while knocking in one and Denton doubled one time with a run scored and RBI.  Brendan Donovan added a multi-hit performance of his own, going 2-for-6 with a solo blast.

Colin Schmid (W, 3-1) tossed the initial five innings, permitting three runs on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts.  Thomas St. Clair yielded two tallies in his inning on the mound before Edgar Escobar struck out three during his two clean frames.  Evan Sisk tossed a scoreless ninth.

Wednesday’s game: at Quad Cities (HOU), 6:35 pm CT, Michael Brettell (1-2, 4.44)

DSL Cardinals Blue 10 at DSL Yankees 12

Hansel Otamendi (Pelota Cubana)

The C-Blue mustered a late rally only to fall short in their 12-10 road slugfest defeat to the DSL Yankees.  The DSL Cardinals Blue (1-1) are tied for fifth in the South Division standings with the Angels, 1 ½ games behind the Mets1.

Down 12-2 through six, the visitors pushed across eight scores in the final three frames, including a six-run eighth.  The Cardinals Blue’s 12-hit attack was led by center fielder Hansel Otamendi, who went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three runs scored out of the two slot.  The only other C-Blue player with more than one hit was right fielder Darlin Moquete, who singled twice in five at bats, touching home once.

A parade of six Cardinals Blue hurlers took the mound on Tuesday, beginning with Luis Ortiz, who did not finish the second inning.  The righty tossed a one-two-three first but gave up two runs on three hits and a walk with two outs recorded the next frame.

Engels Martinez’ first taste of organized ball was a sour one, as the 17-year-old righty surrendered five tallies on a hit, three walks plus a plunked batter with three batters retired.  Three of the five scores resulted from a long ball but Martinez did leave Ortiz’ last two runners on base.

Ronald Suarez went two innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks.  Both of the hits surrendered by Josue Ramirez in just 2/3 of an inning were home runs, accounting for three tallies.  Neither Victor Villanueva (1 2/3 IP) nor Cristoffer Zapata (1 IP) were scored upon although the former allowed one of three inherited runners to score.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. DSL Nationals (0-3), 10:30 am ET, TBA

DSL Cardinals Red 10 vs. DSL Tigers1 6

Diowill Burgos

Diowill Burgos’ hot bat propelled the C-Red past the DSL Tigers1, 10-6.  The DSL Cardinals Red (3-0) are tied with the Mets2 atop the San Pedro Division standings.

Burgos accounted for six tallies, going 3-for-4 with a double, two-run home run, scored three times and drove in four while playing left field.  Three Cardinals Red players had two hits apiece:  second baseman Albert Inoa, first baseman Alexander Samuel and third baseman Luis Andujar.  Inoa reached base four times, singling and tripling in three at bats with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI.  Both Inoa and Samuel swiped their first stolen base but the 17-year-old second baseman also committed his second bobble of the young season.

Making his professional debut, Diorys Guerrero pitched the first 3 2/3 frames.  The southpaw allowed three runs on six hits and three walks with two K’s. Guerrero also threw two wild pitches.

Larimel Soriano (W, 1-0) generated a solid 2 1/3-inning relief effort, permitting an unearned tally on two hits, a walk and a hit batsman.  The righty stranded two inherited runners.   Ramon Fernandez recorded six outs while yielding two runs on four hits.  Hemerson Corder issued a free pass in the ninth.

Wednesday’s game:  at DSL Tigers1 (0-3), 10:30 am ET, TBA

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 3, 2019

photo: Williams Perez (Springfield Cardinals FANatic Photos)

Springfield notched the St. Louis Cardinals organization’s sole win on a 1-4 Sunday behind Williams Perez’ pitching and strong defense. Alex Reyes contributed to Memphis’ losing skid reaching 12, Palm Beach suffered a twin bill sweep and Peoria could not sustain an early advantage.

Results from games played Sunday, June 2nd.

Oklahoma City 8 at Memphis 2

Rangel Ravelo (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The Redbirds fell prey to the home run, resulting in an 8-4 Sunday loss to the Dodgers at AutoZone Park.  Memphis’ 12-game losing streak, one short of the team record, leaves them 11 games behind Iowa (CHC) in the American Northern Division standings and just a half of a game ahead of fourth (and last) place Nashville (TEX).

Five of the seven tallies surrendered by Alex Reyes (L, 1-1) during his 4 2/3-inning stint resulted from three long balls.  The righty allowed seven hits and three walks in all and threw 51 of his 88 pitches for strikes.  Tommy Layne retired his only batter to finish the fifth.

Making his first relief appearance of 2019 and only his second in 47 career games, Evan Kruczynski gave up a run in the sixth without a hit.  His first batter reached on a free pass, advanced to second via a sac bunt and was wild pitched to third before scoring on a sac fly.  The lefty allowed a hit and two walks in three frames with three K’s.  Chris Beck tossed a clean ninth.

The top of the order generated five of Memphis’ six hits, beginning with TCN’s Player of the Month for May Rangel Ravelo.  The first baseman and number three batter went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in Tommy Edman once.  Edman, the Redbirds’ lead-off hitter, scored both of his squad’s tallies, singling and doubling in four at bats.  Defensively, Ravelo took part in both of the Redbirds’ double plays and Edman was part of one of them.

Monday’s game:  Off

Springfield 6 vs. Northwest Arkansas 1

Williams Perez (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

Former major-leaguer Williams Perez pitched six plus successful frames as the S-Cards flew past the Naturals, 6-1, and salvage the third and final game of the home series.  Fourth-place Springfield (23-33) is within a game of elimination for first-half playoff contention.

Player of the Day Perez (W, 6-2) held third-place Northwest Arkansas (23-32) (KC) to a seventh-inning solo shot, one of the nine hits and four walks yielded in 6 2/3.  The veteran was aided by three double plays turned by his defense plus a successful run down between third and home.

Kodi Whitley retired four batters, giving up one hit and stranding an inherited runner.  Seth Elledge tiptoed around a lead-off double in the ninth.

The home team was outhit eight to 11 but capitalized on two Naturals’ miscues to score three unearned tallies.  Chris Chinea and Irving Lopez had productive days at the plate. Chinea went 2-for-4 with a double and solo home run that was one of his two runs scored.  Lopez doubled twice in three at bats at the bottom of the order, scored one and drove in two.  Defensively, in addition to the aforementioned double plays, centerfielder Dylan Carlson was credited with an outfield assist at first.

Monday’s game:  at second-place Tulsa (29-26) (LAD), 7:05 pm CT, Roel Ramirez (1-0, 4.88)

Palm Beach 7 at Florida 9 – Game 1
Palm Beach 0 at Florida 4 (7) – Game 2

Luken Baker (Palm Beach Cardinals)

The Palm Beach Cardinals were swept in a Sunday double-header at Florida, 9-7 and 4-0.  The three-game series sweep by the Fire Frogs (23-33) (ATL) leaves Palm Beach (32-23) in a three-way tie for first with Bradenton (PIT) and Fort Myers (MIN).

The opener completed Saturday’s contest which was suspended due to rain after one inning with the PB-Cards trailing 2-0.  The visitors never overcame that hole, leaving Saturday starter Perry DellaValle with his third loss in five decisions thanks to a two-run long ball.

Highly touted Griffin Roberts took the mound when play resumed on Sunday and gave up five tallies on nine hits and two walks in his four-inning 2019 debut.  The right-hander threw 68 pitches, 45 for strikes, with one strikeout, four ground- and three fly-ball outs.

Ramon Santos was charged with two runs on three hits, including a solo home run, while fanning three in two frames. He also hit one batter.  Zach Prendergast worked around a hit and walk for a scoreless eighth.

Palm Beach garnered eight hits with three players having two hits apiece in four at bats:  Luken Baker, Julio Rodriguez and Zach Kirtley.  All three players doubled once with Baker adding a double and a three-run bomb making up one of his two runs scored while Rodriguez and Kirtley each touched home once.

Ben Yokley (Johnson City Cardinals)

The visitors outhit their hosts six to three in the finale but stranded seven.  Lead-off hitter Chase Pinder was the only Beach Bird with a multi-hit performance, singling twice in three at bats with a walk.

Ben Yokley initiated the bullpen start and acquitted himself quite well.  The Colorado native struck out five over three scoreless innings while the only batter to reach against him was on a free pass.

Ronnie Williams (L, 1-2) did not fare as well, permitting three runs on two hits, a walk and run-scoring balk in his inning of work.  Mitchell Osnowitz got a quick hook after sandwiching two walks around a stolen base and strikeout.  One of his two base runners came around to score after Patrick Dayton yielded a single to his first batter.  It was the only hit Dayton allowed over 1 2/3 innings.

Monday’s game:  vs. Lakeland (23-32) (DET), 6:30 pm ET, TBA

Peoria 5 at Wisconsin 8

Leandro Cedeno (Peoria Chiefs)

The Chiefs could not hold an early lead, falling to the Timber Rattlers, 8-5.  The loss prevented Peoria (24-31) from claiming a three-game road sweep.

Peoria’s bats came out swinging against Wisconsin (26-29) (MIL), pushing across five runs in the first three innings for a 5-1 lead.  But the Timber Rattlers chipped away at that lead by scoring in each of the next four frames.

Leandro Cedeño was the only Chief with more than one of the team’s seven hits. The first baseman went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run.  Nolan Gorman’s only hit in three at bats was his 10th blast of 2019, a two-run shot to put Peoria up 2-0 after one.  Gorman worked a base-on-balls as well and crossed home twice.  Center fielder Brandon Riley went 1-for-3 with a walk, double, run scored and stolen base.

But Diego Cordero (L, 2-5) could not keep Wisconsin at bay, giving up six tallies on eight hits and three base-on-balls in 4 1/3.  It was the 21-year-old’s second sub-par outing in his last three starts.

Freddy Pacheco recorded the fifth’s final two outs but not before issuing two free passes that forced across one of two inherited runners.  Fabian Blanco was tagged for a run on a hit and three walks in just two-thirds of an inning and it would have been worse but for Franyel Casadilla stranding the sacks full of Blanco’s runners.   Casadilla allowed a run on three hits in the seventh before Cole Aker tossed a scoreless eighth.

Monday’s game:  Off

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 31, 2019

photo: Chris Chinea (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

Springfield’s doubleheader sweep led the 3-2 Thursday across the St. Louis Cardinals system. Player of the Day Chris Chinea had three hits, including a home run, and plated three. Palm Beach won a pitching duel, but Memphis lost in extra innings and Peoria’s offense managed just two hits.

Results from games played Thursday, May 30th.

Oklahoma City 10 at Memphis 8 (10)

Rangel Ravelo (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

Memphis (23-32) opened a four-game home set versus the Dodgers with a 10-8 defeat in 10 innings after giving up leads of 4-1 and 6-4.  It was the club’s ninth consecutive loss.

Chris Beck took the loss, his third in as many decisions, yielding two runs, one earned, on three hits in his only inning of work.  Anthony Shew pitched the first five frames, permitting four tallies, three earned, on seven hits and four walks.  The righty fanned five.

Shew departed with the Redbirds up 6-4 but that lasted only until Chris Ellis (BS, 2) took the mound.  Ellis surrendered two home runs representing four runs before recording three outs.  Chasen Shreve struck out four in two scoreless innings before handing the ball off to Jesus Cruz, who fanned the side in the ninth.

The home team transformed eight hits and nine free passes into eight scores.  The offense was led by Rangel Ravelo who went 3-for-5 with a double, triple, two runs scored and three RBI.  Adolis Garcia and Ramon Urias had two hits apiece. Garcia doubled and launched a solo bomb, his 12th long ball of 2019.

Friday’s game:  vs. Oklahoma City (19-34) (LAD), 7:05 pm CT, Ryan Helsley (1-0, 3.05)

Springfield 5 vs. Tulsa 1 (7) – Game 1
Springfield 6 vs. Tulsa 3 (7) – Game 2

Chris Chinea (Springfield Cardinals)

Just over a week after suffering a series sweep at the hands of the Drillers, the S-Cards got out their own brooms.  The result of their 5-1 and 6-3 victories in a Thursday twin bill was a three-games-to-none series win over second-place Tulsa (27-25) (LAD).  Springfield (22-31) moves into third place in the North Division standings with the wins, a half game ahead of Northwest Arkansas, but a distant 13 games out of first with a first-half elimination number of four.

Angel Rondon started the opener and tossed four frames of shutout ball, fanning five while giving up two hits and three walks.  Kodi Whitley (W, 1-2) topped that K total with seven strikeouts in 2 2/3.  Whitley was tagged for a run on four hits and did not issue a free pass.  Jacob Patterson aided Whitley’s cause by fanning his only batter to strand two inherited runners.

Springfield banged out 10 hits in the opener with three players garnering multi-hit efforts:  Randy Arozarena, Chris Chinea and Alberto Triunfel.  Arozarena went 3-for-4 with a run scored out of the clean-up slot but was caught stealing in the team’s only stolen base attempt.  Player of the Day Chinea accounted for three tallies, singling twice in three at bats, touching home two times and knocking in one while Triunfel went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The S-Cards’ offense did more with less in the final, as their eight hits resulted in six tallies.  Irving Lopez and Jose Godoy each had two hits in three at bats, Lopez touching home once and Godoy doubling once with two runs scored.  Chinea’s only hit in three at bats was a two-run home run, his sixth of the season.  Rayder Ascanio added a two-run long ball of his own, his only hit in three at bats.

Four Springfield relievers took the mound in the bullpen game, beginning with Roel Ramirez.  Ramirez fanned three in three frames, permitting a run on two hits and a walk.  Connor Jones was charged with two runs on three hits in his only inning on the bump.  Both hurlers plunked a batter.

Seth Elledge was credited with the win, his third in six decisions, by tossing two clean innings with two hits allowed and two strikeouts notched.  Merandy Gonzalez maneuvered around a hit and walk for his fourth save.

Friday’s game:  vs. fourth-place Northwest Arkansas (21-31) (KC), 7:10 pm CT, Austin Warner (2-4, 4.01)

Palm Beach 2 vs. Daytona 1

Scott Hurst (Memphis Redbirds)

Scott Hurst drove in both runs and Florida State League All-Star Alex Fagalde tossed six strong innings as the Beach Birds edged the Tortugas, 2-1, at Roger Dean.  The victory salvaged the third and final game of the three-game set and keeps the Cards a game ahead in the division.

Hurst went 2-for-4. His first single drove in Michael Perri (single) to give his team a 1-0 lead after three.  The center fielder came up to the plate in the seventh and lined a single to left, scoring Jose Martinez (single) and breaking a 1-1 tie.  Both hits came with two outs.  The only other Cardinal with more than one of the team’s eight hits was Yariel Gonzalez, who went 2-for-3 with a walk.

The only blemish against Fagalde was a fifth-inning home run comprising one of the four hits and two walks yielded.  The right-hander fanned five.

Mitchell Osnowitz (W, 1-1) recorded five outs and gave up three hits without allowing a run.  It was the first organizational victory for the product of Normal, IL.  The righty received a bit of help from Patrick Dayton, who retired his only batter, leaving Osnowitz’ final runner on.  All-Star closer Bryan Dobzanski had a one-two-three ninth with two strikeouts for his sixth save.

Friday’s game:  at Florida (20-33) (ATL), 6:00 pm ET, TBA

Kane County 6 at Peoria 2

The Chiefs’ offense was held to just two hits in their 6-2 defeat to Kane County (29-24) (ARI) in the decisive third game of the series at Dozer Park.

Peoria (22-30) needed the assistance of three Cougars miscues to score their two fourth-inning runs.  Brendan Donovan singled and came home on the second of two errors that also brought Delvin Perez (sac bunt/throwing error) across the plate.

Michael Brettell (L, 1-2) allowed four runs on five hits and two free passes over five innings.  Cole Aker pitched a one-two-three sixth but departed after hitting a batter and walking three the next frame.   Freddy Pacheco walked his first batter, forcing in one of Aker’s runners, before recording the inning’s final out.  Franyel Casadilla worked around two hits for a scoreless eighth.

Friday’s game: at Wisconsin (25-27) (MIL), 6:35 pm CT, Kyle Leahy (2-4, 4.75)

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 29, 2019

photo: Dylan Carlson (Springfield Cardinals FANatic Photos)

Behind Player of the Day Dylan Carlson’s two extra-base hits and two RBI, Springfield claimed the only Tuesday win across the St. Louis Cardinals system. Memphis and Peoria pitching were bombed and uneven Alex Reyes could not lead Palm Beach to victory.

Results from games played Tuesday, May 28th.

San Antonio 8 at Memphis 0

Tommy Edman (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The Redbirds’ losing streak reached seven with an 8-0 defeat to the Missions in the fifth of their six-game set.  Memphis (23-30) has fallen into third place in the American Northern Division, nine games behind Iowa (CHC).

Evan Kruczynski (L, 0-1) was pummeled for six tallies in 14 hits and a walk over six innings.  Chasen Shreve, Dominic Leone and first baseman John Nogowski each pitched a frame.  Shreve and Leone both yielded single scores though Shreve’s run was unearned due to a passed ball charged to catcher Andrew Knizner.

The home team was held to just five hits, including three by shortstop Tommy Edman, who went 3-for-4 with a double out of the lead-off slot.  Defensively, it was a mixed bag for left fielder Rangel Ravelo who was credited with an outfield assist at home plus another at third but committed his third miscue.  Center fielder Adolis Garcia was also credited with an outfield assist, at second base.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. San Antonio (33-20) (MIL), 6:35 pm CT, Jake Woodford (3-1, 3.02)

Springfield 7 vs. Tulsa 4

Dylan Carlson (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The S-Cards began a six-game homestand by downing the Drillers, 7-4.  Fourth-place Springfield (20-31) trails Arkansas (SEA) by 13 games in the Texas League’s North Division standings.

Offense carried the team to victory, led by Player of the Day Dylan Carlson, who doubled and tripled in four at bats, worked a free pass, touched home three times and drove in two.  Irving Lopez went 2-for-4 as well, including a solo shot that was one of the two times he crossed home plate.  Five Springfield players had one hit each.

Williams Perez picked up the win, his fifth in seven decisions, by striking out seven Drillers in six frames while holding them to five hits and two walks.  Half of the four runs yielded by Perez were generated by a two-run home run.

Junior Fernandez faced just one over the minimum during his three-inning stint and that was due to a free pass.  The righty struck out four and earned his second Double-A save.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. second-place Tulsa (27-23) (LAD), 6:30 pm CT, Angel Rondon (0-0, 4.09)

Daytona 5 at Palm Beach 2

Yariel Gonzalez (Peoria Chiefs)

Alex Reyes reached his pitch count during the fifth as the Cards fell to the Tortugas, 5-2, in the series opener.  First-place Palm Beach (31-19) leads the South Division by two games over Bradenton (PIT).

Reyes (L, 0-1) was tagged for three runs on seven hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings, although only one of the three tallies was earned.  Both unearned tallies occurred in the third due to a missed catch error by first baseman Zach Kirtley.  Reyes threw 77 pitches, 48 for strikes, and four of his five leadoff batters reached against him.

The earned run allowed by Reyes scored under C.J. Saylor’s watch after the reliever inherited runners at first and second with one gone.  Saylor yielded a two-out RBI single.  Overall, the California native permitted two hits and a walk with three outs recorded.

Eli Kraus retired five batters, giving up a hit and stranding two inherited runners.  Ben Yokley went two innings, surrendering a two-run bomb that gave the visitors breathing room.

Both of the Beach Birds’ runs occurred in the first on three singles, a walk and a sac fly.  The team was held to just three more hits plus two walks the rest of the way.  The only Palm Beach player with a multi-hit effort was Yariel Gonzalez, who singled twice in four at bats with an RBI.

Defensively, Kirtley’s bobble was one of three Palm Beach miscues.  Jose Martinez was charged with a fielding error after moving from short to second mid-game and his replacement at short, Michael Perri, committed a throwing error.  On the plus side, centerfielder Scott Hurst and left fielder Lars Nootbaar were each credited with an outfield assist, at second and third, respectively, or the scoring gap could have been greater.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Daytona (28-23) (CIN), 6:30 pm ET, Tommy Parsons (3-0, 2.82)

Kane County 9 at Peoria 1 (7)

Ivan Herrera (Peoria Chiefs)

Chiefs pitching was mauled by the visiting Cougars in the series opener, 9-1, a game shortened to seven innings due to rain.  Seventh-place Peoria (21-29) is 12 ½ games in back of Quad Cities (HOU) in the Western Division standings.

Diego Cordero (L, 2-4) yielded five runs, three earned, on eight hits over six innings, including a two-out solo shot in his final inning of work.  The right-hander did not issue a free pass and struck out four.

All five batters facing Sebastian Tabata in the seventh reached as the 21-year-old gave up one hit, walked three and plunked one, leading to four tallies.  Fabian Blanco fared little better during his brief stint, issuing two free passes that scored two of Tabata’s runners while recording one out before the game was called.  Both Cordero (two) and Tabata (one) were called for balks.

Five Chiefs each gathered one hit, with the team’s sole score coming in the sixth.  Nolan Gorman doubled with one gone, advanced to third on a wild pitch and crossed home after Ivan Herrera singled to left.  The third baseman and shortstop Delvin Perez were each charged with an error.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. third-place Kane County (28-23) (ARI), 6:35 pm CT, Colin Schmid (1-1, 3.75)

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 27, 2019

photo: Adolis Garcia (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

Another Memphis bullpen failure wasted Player of the Day Adolis Garcia’s single, double and triple on a 1-3 Sunday across the St. Louis Cardinals system. Palm Beach flipped the script with a five-run ninth inning comeback win. Peoria was blown out and Springfield lost an early lead.

Results from games played Sunday, May 26th.

San Antonio 7 at Memphis 4

Adolis Garcia (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

Three San Antonio ninth-inning runs on one swing of the bat sent the Redbirds to a 7-4 home loss at the hands of the Missions.  It was the fourth loss in a row for Memphis (23-27), including the first two of a six-game set versus San Antonio.

Chris Beck (L, 0-2) served up the deciding three-run bomb in his second inning of work, unknotting a 4-4 tie.  The home run was one of three hits and a walk yielded over two innings.

Pressed into starting with scheduled starter Genesis Cabrera bound for St. Louis, Ryan Helsley tossed three scoreless frames, limiting his opponents to two walks, both in the first.  The righty was tagged with an unearned tally due to a throwing error by second baseman Ramon Urias which allowed the lead runner to score.  Helsley struck out two and threw 45 pitches, 23 for strikes.

Chasen Shreve issued three free passes during his two-inning stint, handing the ball off to Dominic Leone.  Leone’s struggles continued as he was charged with three tallies on four hits and two walks with six outs recorded. The right-hander’s Triple-A ERA is up to 10.13.

The Redbirds generated nine hits, paced by Player of the Day Adolis Garcia who went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, two runs scored and one knocked in.  Drew Robinson, the only other Memphis player with more than one hit, went 2-for-2 with a walk, double, triple, touched home once and drove in two.

Monday’s games: vs. San Antonio (30-20) (MIL).  Game 1 – 1:05 pm CT, Daniel Ponce de Leon (4-2, 3.48)/Ryan Meisinger (0-4, 3.49)

Springfield 3 at Arkansas 6

Hector Mendoza (Steve Mitchell/USA TODAY Sports)

The S-Cards could not hold an early lead, falling to the Travelers, 6-3.  Springfield (19-31) claimed only one of the four-game series at Arkansas (32-16) (SEA).

The visitors led 3-1 through four but a three-run fifth against Johan Oviedo (L, 1-1) placed them in a hole from which they could not escape.  Oviedo allowed five runs in all on 10 hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings.  One of the hits was a home run with the bases empty.

Hector Mendoza retired all five batters faced, leaving Oviedo’s final runner on.  Seth Elledge gave up a run on two hits in the eighth.

Six Springfield players divided the team’s seven hits with shortstop Alberto Triunfel singling twice in four at bats.

Monday’s game:  Off

Palm Beach 7 at Charlotte 4

Julio Rodriguez (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

A five-run ninth propelled the PB-Cards past the Stone Crabs, 7-4, in the series finale.  Palm Beach (31-18) took the road set, three games to one, over Charlotte (26-24) (TB).

The first six Beach Birds taking an at bat that inning all reached, flipping a 4-2 deficit into a 6-4 lead and knocking Charlotte’s pitcher from the game before he recorded an out.  Catcher Julio Rodriguez swung the most productive bat for a squad that generated 14 hits in all, going 3-for-4 with a walk, double and three RBI.

Two other Palm Beach players also generated three hits apiece:  Luken Baker and Lars Nootbaar.  Baker went 3-for-5 with a solo blast while Nootbaar singled three times in four at bats with one driven in.  Justin Toerner and Yariel Gonzalez each had two hits. Toerner went 2-for-6 with a triple plus two runs scored and Gonzalez singled twice in five at bats, touching home once and knocking in two.  Defensively, left fielder Nootbaar was credited with an outfield assist at home.

Perry DellaValle struck out five over the first 4 1/3, allowing six hits but not issuing a free pass.  The last of his two runs charged came home under Patrick Dayton’s watch on one of the three hits Dayton yielded in 1 2/3 innings.

The tally charged to Dayton scored in the seventh after the lefty gave up a single to his initial batter.  Ramon Santos, who replaced Dayton, could not overcome his own throwing error on an attempted sac bunt with both runners scoring on subsequent plays.

Zach Prendergast worked around two singles and a base-on-balls for a clean eighth, putting him in line for his second win in three decisions.  Bryan Dobzanski faced the minimum in the ninth for his fifth save.

Monday’s game:  Off

Peoria 1 at Cedar Rapids 14

Brendan Donovan (Peoria Chiefs)

It was a long Sunday for four Chiefs’ hurlers as Peoria (21-28) was blown out at Cedar Rapids, 14-1.  The visitors will try to salvage a four-game split when the series concludes on Monday.

Put in the rotation over struggling Cole Aker, Michael Brettell (L, 1-1) did not fare any better. Brettell recorded four outs but not before surrendering eight runs, six earned, on eight hits and a base-on-balls.  One of the hits was a three-run long ball.

Thomas St. Clair tossed 2 2/3 innings, yielding a tally on five hits and a walk while stranding an inherited runner.  Working in relief, Aker was charged with three runs, one earned, on three hits and three free passes in three frames.  Edgar Escobar pitched the eighth, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits.

As can be seen in the pitching stats, Peoria received little help from their position players, who committed nearly as many errors (five) as they garnered hits (six).  Those bobbles led to five unearned runs.  Brettell was charged with a throwing error, left fielder Leandro Cedeño had a fielding miscue as did first baseman Josh Shaw and shortstop Delvin Perez committed two fielding bobbles.

Offensively, second baseman Brendan Donovan and third baseman Nolan Gorman posted nearly identical marks.  Both players singled and doubled in four at bats, with Gorman’s single driving in Donovan to prevent the shutout.

Monday’s game:  at Cedar Rapids (25-25) (MIN), 12:05 pm CT, Diego Cordero (2-3, 2.61)

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 24, 2019

photo: Angel Rondon (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

The 2-2 Thursday across the St. Louis Cardinals system featured wins by Palm Beach and Peoria and bullpen failures for Memphis and Springfield. The latter wasted a strong start by Player of the Day Angel Rondon, who fanned nine in six one-run frames for the S-Cards, losers of seven straight.

Results from games played Thursday, May 23rd.

Memphis 5 at Nashville 8

Drew Robinson (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The bullpen struggles returned as a four-run eighth resulted in the Redbirds’ 8-5 road loss at Nashville.  Memphis (23-24) holds a two-games-to-one series lead with one contest on tap while remaining in second place in the American Northern Division standings, 5 ½ games behind Iowa (CHC).

With the game knotted at four-all through seven, reliever Jesus Cruz (L, 1-5) began his brief stint by loading the bases on a single plus two free passes before serving up a grand slam with two gone.  Cruz plunked his next batter, leading to his ejection by the home plate umpire.  Also given the heave ho were Memphis’ manager Ben Johnson, first baseman John Nogowski and former Redbird Patrick Wisdom.

Evan Kruczynski fared little better in his second Triple-A start than he did in his first.  The southpaw was tagged for four tallies on six hits, including a solo shot, and a walk in 5 2/3.  All four runs scored in either the fifth or sixth inning.  Kruczynski also threw a wild pitch and was called for a balk.

Domenic Leone used one of Memphis’ three double plays to mitigate the damage caused by his single and three walks yielded over 1 1/3 frames and left Kruczynski’s final runner aboard.  Tommy Layne replaced Cruz on the mound and retired his only batter.

Memphis outhit Nashville, 10 to nine, but both long balls came with the bases empty.  Center fielder Drew Robinson led the way, going 3-for-5 with a double and home run for one of his two runs scored and two RBI.  Tommy Edman added a home run (for the second consecutive night) and a single, but was erased from the base paths trying to take third.  Rangel Ravelo’s ground-rule double extended his hitting streak to 18 games.

Friday’s game:  at fourth-place Nashville (18-28) (TEX), 6:35 pm CT, Jake Woodford (3-1, 2.44)

Springfield 1 at Arkansas 4

Angel Rondon (Palm Beach Cardinals)

The S-Cards opened their four-game set at Arkansas by absorbing a 4-1 loss, their seventh defeat in a row.  Springfield (18-29) sits firmly in last place in the North Division standings, 13 ½ games in back of the Travelers.

The visitors managed just one hit through the first seven innings before combining singles by Evan Mendoza, Conner Capel and Jose Godoy.  Godoy’s hit drove in Mendoza and tied the game at 1-1.

But the tie only lasted until the home half of the frame when Seth Elledge (L, 2-3) permitted three runs on three hits and two free passes with one out recorded.  Elledge’s last run scored under Kodi Whitley’s watch after Whitley gave up an RBI single to his first batter.  Left fielder Capel’s outfield assist at home prevented further damage on the play and the righty recorded the eighth’s final out via a swinging K.

The lack of offense squandered a noteworthy effort by Player of the Day Angel Rondon in his second Double-A start.  The 21-year-old struck out nine in six innings, the sole mark against him being a first-inning home run that was one of his five hits allowed.  Rondon issued one free pass.  Hector Mendoza tossed a clean seventh before giving way to Elledge.

Friday’s game:  at first-place Arkansas (30-15) (SEA), 7:10 pm CT, Austin Warner (2-3, 4.37)

Palm Beach 5 at Charlotte 4 (10)

Alex Reyes (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

The Beach Birds continue their seven-game road trip with a series-opening victory over the Stone Crabs, 5-4 in 10.  Palm Beach (29-17) remains atop the South Division standings, two games in front of Fort Myers (MIN).

The visitors had a chance to win in regulation, taking a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth.  But Ramon Santos sandwiched a force at second around a walk and single that put runners at first and second for Bryan Dobzanski.  Dobzanski (W, 1-0) (BS, 1) surrendered run-scoring singles to his first two batters, sending the game into extras.

But the offense came through in the top of the 10th.  Julio Rodriguez started the inning at second, advanced to third on Luken Baker’s single and scored the winning run when Nick Dunn generated an infield single to second that was deflected by Charlotte’s first baseman.

Dobzanski’s return to the mound generated better results in the bottom of the 10th.  The New Jersey native followed up his two swinging K’s to end the ninth with three straight groundball outs for the win.

In his return from a fractured finger, Alex Reyes started, his first action since a Triple-A start on April 25th in which he lasted just 2 2/3 frames.  The righty tossed five strong innings in his Florida State League return, fanning six with two hits and two walks given up resulting in one run in his initial inning on the bump.

Zach Prendergast struck out four over the next two innings, yielding a run on a triple and sac fly.  Santos faced the minimum in the eighth before running into trouble to next frame.

The Cardinals had their bats going on Thursday with eight of nine starters garnering at least one of the team’s 14 hits.  Baker and Dunn each went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Dunn doubled once and drove in two.  Lars Nootbaar and Yariel Gonzalez had two hits apiece and Rodriguez added his fifth home run of 2019.

Friday’s game:  at fourth-place Charlotte (25-22) (TB), 6:30 pm ET, Alex Fagalde (5-2, 2.37)

Peoria 6 at Wisconsin 5

Ivan Herrera (Peoria Chiefs)

The Chiefs held off a ninth-inning rally to edge the Timber Rattlers, 6-5, and salvage a second win in the now-completed five-game stanza.  Seventh-place Peoria (20-26) trails Quad Cities (HOU) by 10 ½ games in the Western Division standings.

The game was marred by suspect defense with each club committing three miscues leading to four unearned runs combined.  Kyle Leahy (W, 2-4) was tagged with one of them during his five-inning stint, with all three tallies charged to the right-hander occurring in the fourth.  Leahy gave up four hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Apparently moved out of the rotation into long relief, Cole Aker held sixth-place Wisconsin (21-24) (MIL) scoreless over the next two frames, yielding a hit and walk.  Edgar Escobar retired his first four batters but put runners at the corners via a walk and two-out double.  A fly ball to left should have ended the game but it was mishandled by Brandon Riley, leading to two unearned runs.  Escobar regrouped to coax a pop up to first for his fourth save.

The Chiefs’ offense got on track immediately, producing five runs before making six outs.  Catcher Ivan Herrera led the charge, going 3-for-5 with a double, run scored and two RBI.  Nolan Gorman was the only other Peoria player with a multi-hit day, singling twice in three at bats with a walk, two runs scored and two knocked in.  Defensively, third baseman Malcom Nunez had two bobbles and Herrera was charged with a passed ball.

Friday’s game:  at fifth-place Cedar Rapids (23-24) (MIN), TBA

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 22, 2019

photo: Genesis Cabrera (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

Across the St. Louis Cardinals system, it was a rough 1-4 Tuesday evening, including three ninth-inning losses. However, Memphis’ pen came through, protecting the best start of the season for Player of the Day Genesis Cabrera, who allowed two runs over six innings.

Results from games played Tuesday, May 21st.

Memphis 4 at Nashville 2

Genesis Cabrera (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

Genesis Cabrera tossed six solid frames as Memphis (22-23) downed Nashville in the road series opener, 4-2.

Cabrera (W, 2-3) limited the Sounds to single tallies in the third and fifth and permitted just four hits and a walk, including a solo shot.  The lefty struck out six with four ground- to seven fly- ball outs.

The pen, shaky in recent games, came through Tuesday. Dominic Leone faced the minimum in the seventh, fanning two, followed by Jesus Cruz who matched his effort the next frame.  Chris Beck tossed a one-two-three ninth, striking out one, for his fourth save.

The Redbirds trailed 2-1 going into the seventh when they pushed across three runs on four of the team’s nine hits.  Rangel Ravelo and John Nogowski each went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Ravelo doubling and walking once with a run scored.  The Redbirds were busy on the base paths as Drew Robinson stole two bases while Max Schrock and Lane Thomas each swiped one.

Wednesday’s game:  at Nashville (17-27) (TEX), 6:35 pm CT, Daniel Ponce de Leon (3-2, 3.96)

Tulsa 3 at Springfield 2

Dylan Carlson (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The S-Cards’ bullpen could not hold a ninth-inning lead as they dropped a 3-2 decision to Tulsa at Hammons Field.  The home team has lost both of the three-game series’ first two contests.

Springfield (18-27) led 2-1 with three outs to go but Kodi Whitley issued two free passes followed by a two-run double for his second loss in as many decisions and first blown save.  It was the right-hander’s only inning of work.

Johan Oviedo used six strikeouts to minimize the damage caused by three hits and four walks resulting in one tally allowed in five innings.  Junior Fernandez fanned five in two innings before Roel Ramirez tossed a clean eighth.

The home team was held to just five hits, one each by five Springfield players.  Both scores were generated when Dylan Carlson went yard with Irving Lopez (single) aboard in the sixth.  It was the centerfielder’s eighth long ball of 2019.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Tulsa (23-21) (LAD), 11:10 am CT, Williams Perez (4-2, 5.70)

Palm Beach 1 at Lakeland 3

Perry DellaValle (Joseph Freiday Sr. photo)

The Beach Birds fell prey to the long ball in their 3-1 walk-off loss at Lakeland.  Palm Beach (27-17) will try to prevent a three-game sweep by the Flying Tigers when the two teams meet on Wednesday.

C.J. Saylor (L, 2-2) worked around a single for a clean eighth but gave up another single plus a home run to his first two batters faced the next frame.  That spoiled a fine start by Perry DellaValle, who held Lakeland to an unearned run on four hits and three walks over seven.  DellaValle fanned seven and threw 61 of his 93 pitches for strikes.

The PB-Cards’ sole tally came in the seventh on three of their four total hits plus one of their two walks.  Scott Hurst and Dennis Ortega generated back-to-back singles with one gone before a free pass issued to Lars Nootbar jammed the sacks full for Rayder Ascanio.  Ascanio came through with a single up the middle to score Hurst but neither Jose Martinez nor Justin Toerner could come through for more runs.

Wednesday’s game:  at Lakeland (19-25) (DET), 6:30 pm ET, Tommy Parsons (2-0, 3.38)

Peoria 8 at Wisconsin 12 (7) – Game 1
Peoria 1 at Wisconsin 2 (8) – Game 2

Brady Whalen (Peoria Chiefs)

The Chiefs lost a twin bill at Wisconsin on Tuesday, with one a slugfest and the other a pitchers’ duel.  Peoria (19-24) has won one of the series’ first three games with two to play.

Coming in with a 1.66 ERA, Diego Cordero had his worst outing of 2019 to date in the opener. The 21-year old took his third loss in five decisions after permitting six runs on nine hits and three walks over five innings.  One of the nine hits was a two-run home run.  The righty threw a wild pitch and was called for a balk.

Thomas St. Clair was charged with six tallies on six hits and a base-on-balls in just 2/3 of an inning.  With Fabian Blanco on the mound, three of the runs scored via a two-run single and wild pitch.

Catcher Alexis Wilson swung the big bat, generating a perfect 4-for-4 output while crossing home once.  The only other Chief with more than one of the team’s 10 hits was Brady Whalen who singled and doubled in four at bats, scored once and knocked in four.

Michael Brettell (Bret Jacomet photo)

Pitching took center stage in the finale as the two squads combined for just six hits.  Michael Brettell tossed 5 1/3 strong frames in his second start of seven appearances to date.  The Canadian limited the Timber Rattlers to a run on two hits and a free pass with five K’s.

The game-tying run charged to Brettell scored under Freddy Pacheco’s watch after the latter allowed a two-single in the sixth.  Pacheco (L, 0-1) (BS,2) issued four free passes  in 1 2/3, one intentional, and was charged with the unearned score when Franyel Casadilla yielded an run-scoring single to his first batter for the walk-off loss.

Wednesday’s game:  at Wisconsin (19-23) (MIL), 6:35 pm CT, Colin Schmid (1-0, 0.00)

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 20, 2019

photo: Alex Fagalde (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

Player of the Day Alex Fagalde’s stellar pitching effort led Palm Beach to the St. Louis Cardinals system’s only win on a 1-3 Sunday.  Brady Whalen’s career effort at the plate wasn’t enough to avert a Peoria loss.

Results from games played Sunday, May 19th.

Memphis 3 at San Antonio 9

Andrew Knizner (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The Redbirds absorbed their fourth straight road defeat at San Antonio, 9-3, and will try to prevent a series sweep when they take on the Missions on Monday morning.  Second-place Memphis (21-22) is 4 ½ games in back of Iowa (CHC) in the American Northern standings.

Jake Woodford (L, 3-1) permitted five runs on seven hits, including a solo bomb, and three walks in five innings.  Three of the four tallies allowed by Tommy Layne in two frames resulted from a home run comprising one of the six hits and one walk given up.  Chris Beck worked around two hits and a base-on-balls for a scoreless eighth.

Andrew Knizner was the only Memphis player with more than one of the team’s six hits.  The catcher went 2-for-4 with a bases-empty home run.  Ramon Urias reach baseed twice, doubling once in two at bats with a free pass and RBI.

Monday’s game:  at San Antonio (26-17) (MIL), 11:05 am CT, Ryan Meisinger (0-3, 3.70)

Springfield 3 at Northwest Arkansas 4

Elehuris Montero (Memphis Redbirds)

The S-Cards fell prey to the long ball in their 4-3 road defeat at Northwest Arkansas (19-23) (KC).  Springfield (18-25) dropped the final three games of their four-game set vs. the Naturals and the skid put them sole possession of last place in the North Division, nine games behind Arkansas (SEA).

Three of the four tallies surrendered by Austin Warner (L, 2-3) in 7 1/3 frames resulted from two home runs.  The bombs were two of the six hits and three walks he yielded.  The lefty struck out nine and picked off a runner at first.  Roel Ramirez worked around a single to strand Warner’s last base runner.

It was a frustrating day for the visitors’ offense which outhit their hosts, 10 to six, but went 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left eight on base.  No. eight hitter Irving Lopez led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and run scored.

Elehuris Montero displayed life in his bat in his return to action after three weeks off.  The third baseman went 2-for-4 with a solo shot that gave his team a very brief 1-0 lead midway through four.  The final Springfield player with more than one hit was Evan Mendoza, who singled and doubled in four at bats. Dylan Carlson added a solo home run, his seventh of the season.

Monday’s game:  vs. second-place Tulsa (21-21) (LAD), 6:30 pm CT, Harold Arauz (0-4, 9.67)

Palm Beach 2 vs. Bradenton 0

Alex Fagalde (Palm Beach Cardinals)

A trio of Beach Birds pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout as the PB-Cards edged the Marauders, 2-0, in the decisive third game of the series.  Palm Beach (27-15) holds a two game advantage over second-place Fort Myers (MIN) in the South Division standings.

Player of the Day Alex Fagalde (W, 5-2) held third-place Bradenton (23-19) (PIT) to two hits and a walk over seven impressive innings.  The California native struck out six and threw 64 of his 97 pitches for strikes.

Ramon Santos faced the minimum in the eighth before Bryan Dobzanski pitched around a one-out walk for his fourth save.  Each reliever fanned one.

The Beach Cards’ bats were held to just five hits themselves but two of the three free passes issued to them by Bradenton hurlers proved crucial.  Justin Toerner walked to lead off the home half of the first, advanced on Luken Baker’s two-out single and put his team on the scoreboard via a single to right by Yariel Gonzalez.

Baker was the one doing the walking in the bottom of the third.  The designated hitter worked a free pass after Scott Hurst reached on a fielding error by the Marauders’ shortstop.  His base-on-balls put Hurst into position to score on Gonzalez’ line-drive up the middle.  Gonzalez was the only player with a multi-hit performance.

Monday’s game:  at Lakeland (17-25) (DET), 6:30 pm ET, Edgar Gonzalez (3-5, 3.20)

Quad Cities 11 at Peoria 9

Brady Whalen (Peoria Chiefs)

The Chiefs could not hold a slim lead at the game’s mid-point, falling to Quad Cities, 11-9.  Seventh-place Peoria (18-23) lost three of the four-game home series to the first-place River Bandits (26-13) (HOU), a club they trail by nine games in the Western Division standings.

The home team led 5-4 after five only to watch their visitors score seven times over the final four frames.  Starter Cole Aker battled severe control problems, issuing eight free passes in 4 2/3, hitting a batter, throwing a wild pitch and getting called for a balk.  Aker was tagged for four runs, three earned, and gave up two hits.

Evan Sisk (L, 1-2) allowed one of two inherited runners to score plus two of his own, one earned, on three hits and a base-on-balls with six outs recorded.  Fabian Blanco served up a three-run long ball that scored Sisk’s final runner and broke a 6-6 tie after six.  The righty gave up five hits and two walks in total, exiting with two gone and the bases jammed in the ninth.  Thomas St. Clair allowed two hits that cleared the bases before recording the ninth’s last out.

Peoria banged out 12 hits, led by first baseman Brady Whalen who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a sac fly and a career-high six driven in.  Eight of nine starters garnered at least one hit as Leandro Cedeño and Nolan Gorman had two hits apiece.  Both went 2-for-4 with a walk and RBI. Cedeño doubled twice with two runs scored plus a stolen base and Gorman had one two-bagger and touched home three times.  Defensively, the Chiefs committed three miscues, two by catcher Alexis Wilson and one by second baseman Brendan Donovan.

Monday’s game: at sixth-place Wisconsin (18-22) (MIL), 6:35 pm CT, Alvaro Seijas (2-4, 2.19)

Note: The Peoria starter is updated from Diego Cordero, who will pitch Tuesday instead.

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 17, 2019

photo: Dylan Carlson (Aaron Doster/Imagn)

The 2-2 Thursday across the St. Louis Cardinals system had varying results. Springfield won big behind Player of the Day Dylan Carlson, but Peoria lost bigger. Memphis suffered a ninth-inning letdown while streaking Palm Beach delivered a shutout.

Results from games played Thursday, May 16th.

Memphis 3 at San Antonio 4

Genesis Cabrera (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The Redbirds began a nine-game road trip by absorbing a 4-3 walk-off loss at San Antonio.  Memphis (21-19) remains in second place in the American Northern Division, 3 ½ games in back of Iowa (CHC).

The visitors took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth but Tommy Layne (L, 1-1) (BS, 2) was tagged for two walks and two runs driven in on a two-out double.  Genesis Cabrera’s strong start was wasted, as the lefty scattered eight hits and a base-on-balls over the first six innings, resulting in two runs. Two of the five outs recorded by Ryan Helsley were strikeouts and Ryan Meisinger fanned his only batter.

Memphis generated seven hits, two of them by Tyler O’Neill who went 2-for-4 with a solo shot.  Adolis Garcia added a home run with the bases clean, his 10th long ball of 2019 and only hit in four at bats.  Rangel Ravelo led the hitting effort by singling three times in four at bats.

Friday’s game:  at San Antonio (23-17) (MIL), 7:05 pm CT, Daniel Ponce De Leon (3-1, 3.03)

Springfield 10 at Northwest Arkansas 4

Dylan Carlson (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

Six late runs broke open a tight contest as the S-Cards flew past Northwest Arkansas in the road series opener, 10-4.  Springfield (18-22) solidified its hold on third place over the Naturals with the victory and sit six games behind Arkansas (SEA) in the North Division standings.

Springfield held a tenuous 3-2 lead until the visitors exploded for a four-run eighth, and following that up with two more in the ninth.  Player of the Day Dylan Carlson was a single shy of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-5 with a double, triple and solo home run comprising one of his four RBI.  The center fielder added his sixth stolen base to his hitting effort.

Jose Godoy went 3-for-5 as well, doubling once with a run scored and driving in three.  One of Johan Mieses’ two hits in four at bats was his third home run of the season, a three-run blast that put his team up 3-0 through four.  Springfield’s designated hitter added a double to his bomb and crossed home twice.  Irving Lopez was the final Springfield player with a multi-hit performance, as the second baseman singled twice in five at bats with a run scored.

Johan Oviedo tossed six solid frames in picking up his first Double-A win in his third start.  The 21-year-old allowed seven hits and a free pass, resulting in three runs, which all scored in the fifth frame.

Hector Mendoza tossed a clean seventh but Seth Elledge was touched for a run on two hits in 2/3 of an inning.  Elledge hit a batter as well.  That batter scored with Merendy Gonzalez on the mound after the righty inherited a bases-loaded jam then uncorked a run-scoring wild pitch.  Gonzalez used a 6-4-3 double play to negate a single and two ninth-inning walks, picking up his second save.

Friday’s game:  at fourth-place Northwest Arkansas (23-15) (KC), 7:15 pm CT, Williams Perez (4-1, 4.30)

Palm Beach 5 vs. Tampa 0

Perry DellaValle (Joseph Freiday Sr. photo)

A trio of Beach Birds hurlers combined on a three-hitter in their 5-0 win over Tampa (17-22) (NYY) and a four-game home series sweep.  Palm Beach (25-14) is riding a six-game winning streak that has vaulted them into a tie atop of the South Division standings with Fort Myers (MIN).

Perry DellaValle (W, 2-2) pitched the initial five frames, limiting the opposition to two hits while not issuing a free pass.  The Seton Hill product struck out three, hit one and threw 51 of his 79 pitches for strikes.

Mitchell Osnowitz gave up a two-out single in his first inning of work but retired his final three batters.  Ramon Santos recorded the last seven outs and allowed one base-on-balls.

Four of the home team’s five tallies occurred in the sixth, which featured Zach Kirtley’s lead-off single plus RBI doubles by Julio Rodriguez and Bryce Denton.  In a move the Tampa manager may now regret, the Yankees’ starter was removed after 5 1/3 having yielded only one run.  His replacement threw two wild pitches, the latter one scoring Rodriguez, and plunked two batters – both of whom came around to score.

Kirtley was the only PB-Card with more than one of the team’s six hits.  The first baseman singled twice in four at bats and touched home via Rodriguez’ double.  Denton reached base three times, doubling once in two at bats with two walks and two knocked in.

Friday’s game:  vs. third-place Bradenton (22-17) (PIT), 6:30 pm ET, Tommy Parsons (1-0, 4.91)

Quad Cities 21 at Peoria 1

Brady Whalen (Peoria Chiefs)

The sixth-place Chiefs’ home series opener against the Western Division’s top team resulted in a 21-1 shellacking by the River Bandits.

15 of the visitors’ 21 runs were generated in either the fourth or ninth frame.  Jacob Schlesener (L, 0-4) could not retire any of his five batters faced in the fourth, the result being six runs allowed, five earned, on four hits, a whopping seven walks and a hit batsman in three plus innings.

Fabian Blanco outdid Schlesener by plunking three batters, including one batter twice, and yielding six runs on four hits and two bases-on-balls with six outs recorded.  Blanco allowed both inherited runners to touch home.

Sebastian Tabata, the third of five Peoria hurlers to be scored upon, tossed two frames while permitting three tallies on two hits, three free passes and a hit batsman.  (The same guy Schlesener plunked, if you are keeping track.)

Thomas St. Clair worked around a lead-off walk for a scoreless eighth but got the hook after issuing three more free passes amidst two outs the next inning.  All three runners scored under Josh Shaw’s watch, as the infielder pressed into pitching duties was pounded for a double and back-to-back home runs before recording the third out.

The Chiefs offense managed just five hits. Their only score came on Brady Whalen’s first-inning long ball.  Whalen went 2-for-4 as the only Peoria player with more than one hit.

Friday’s game:  vs. first-place Quad Cities (24-12) (HOU), 6:35 pm CT, TBA

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 15, 2019

photo: Jake Woodford (Memphis Redbirds)

A trio of superb starts led the St. Louis Cardinals system to a 3-1 record on Tuesday. Player of the Day Jake Woodford (Memphis), Austin Warner (Springfield) and Alex Fagalde (Palm Beach) each tossed noteworthy efforts in their team’s victories but Peoria went down to defeat in 11 innings.

Results from games played Tuesday, May 14th.

Memphis 9 vs. Nashville 3

Jake Woodford (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

Jake Woodford was impressive over seven innings, backed by his teammates’ long ball prowess, as the Redbirds flew past the Sounds, 9-3, and claimed the four-game home series, three games to one.  Second-place Memphis (21-18) gained a game on the division leaders with the victory and is nnow three games behind Iowa (CHC) in the American Northern Division.

Woodford (W, 3-0) blanked fourth-place Nashville (13-25) (TEX) on five hits and two walks while striking out six.  The 22-year-old is holding opponents to a .176 batting average over 46 2/3 innings in eight Triple-A starts.

Woodford departed with a 3-0 lead thanks to a two-run bomb by Rangel Ravelo in the fourth plus Tyler O’Neill’s sixth-inning solo shot.  But the home team was not finished either scoring or going yard, pouring on back-to-back three-run frames in the seventh and eighth.  Drew Robinson left the park with Tommy Edman (single) aboard after the latter drove in Edmundo Sosa (double) in the seventh before John Nogowski launched his fourth home run of 2019 with O’Neill (walk) and Adolis Garcia (single) on base the following inning.  The Redbirds banged out nine hits with Robinson the only player with a multi-hit effort.

Memphis’ bullpen was unable to match Woodford’s stellar performance.  Jesus Cruz yielded a run on two hits and Chris Beck was tagged for two tallies on two hits and a free pass in his inning of work.

Wednesday’s game:  Off

Springfield 3 vs. Arkansas 1

Austin Warner (Springfield Cardinals FANatic Photos)

Austin Warner was a strikeout machine and Justin Williams’ first Springfield home run proved the difference in the S-Cards’ 3-1 home win over the Travelers.  Third-place Springfield (17-21) has won four straight, including the first two of the three-game series against division-leading Arkansas.  This is the third consecutive series’ victory for the S-Cards.

Williams went yard with Irving Lopez (single) on in the fifth, an inning in which the home team generated four of their eight hits on the night.  It was the left fielder’s only hit in four at bats.  Dylan Carlson and Evan Mendoza both singled twice in four at bats, the only two S-Cards with more than one hit.

The long ball gave Warner (W, 2-2) a 3-0 cushion which the lefty maintained only until surrendering a solo bomb the next inning.  The home run was one of seven hits and a base-on-balls permitted over seven frames.  Warner struck out 10 with six ground- to no fly- ball outs.  Junior Fernandez retired all six batters faced, four via the K, for his first Double-A save of 2019.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. first-place Arkansas (22-14) (SEA), 11:10 am CT, Harold Arauz (0-3, 7.65)

Palm Beach 5 vs. Tampa 3

Alex Fagalde (State College Spikes)

Alex Fagalde tossed seven strong frames in the PB-Cards’ 5-3 victory over the Tarpons, their fourth win in a row.  Palm Beach (23-14) has taken the first two games of four versus Tampa and is in second-place in the South Division, a game behind Fort Myers (MIN).

Fagalde (W, 4-2) limited the opposition to just three hits over seven frames and did not issue a free pass, with the only mark against him a solo home run in the first.  The righty struck out five and threw 55 of his 80 pitches for strikes.

It took a trio of Beach Bird hurlers to complete the final two frames.  Michael Osnowitz pitched a one-two-three eighth but got the hook after walking his first two batters the next inning.  Both runners came around to score after Ramon Santos gave up a double to his first batter.  However, the batter was erased by catcher Julio Rodriguez trying to take third on the play, leaving the bases clean when Santos recorded a fly out to right.  Patrick Dayton came in and caught his only batter looking to end the game.

Palm Beach utilized eight hits and three Tampa miscues to score their five tallies, three earned.  The only player with more than one hit was Zach Kirtley, who singled and doubled in four at bats with two RBI.  Rodriguez and Lars Nootbar each went 1-for-3, Rodriguez scoring one and driving in another while Nootbar knocked in two in his Beach Birds debut.  Defensively, left fielder Nootbar was credited with an outfield assist at second.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Tampa (17-20) (NYY), 6:30 pm ET, Edgar Gonzalez (2-5, 3.78)

Beloit 6 at Peoria 5 (11 innings)

Delvin Perez (Peoria Chiefs)

The Chiefs’ bullpen could not hold a slim lead, as Peoria eventually fell to the last-place Snappers 6-5 in 11 innings at Dozer Park.  Sixth-place Peoria (16-19) trails in the five-game set, one-game-to-two and is 7 ½ in back of Quad Cities (HOU) in the Western Division standings.

The bullpen was called upon early after starter Cole Aker lasted just 2 2/3 innings.  Aker permitted three runs on a hit, three walks and a hit batsman.

His final runner scored under Franyel Casadilla’s watch, but over the next 3 1/3 innings, Casadilla went on to limit Beloit to a solo home run that was one of three hits and two walks yielded.  Freddy Pacheco (BS, 1) tossed a clean seventh but allowed the visitors to knot the game at 5-5 the next frame.  Evan Sisk (L, 1-1) recorded nine outs but was tagged for an unearned score with a runner placed on second, a single and run-scoring double-play ball.  Fabian Blanco struck out his only batter.

Two Chiefs shared five of the team’s seven hits:  Delvin Perez and Nolan Gorman.  Perez went 3-for-4 with a walk, double and three runs scored while leading off and one of Gorman’s two hits in three at bats was his ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot comprising two of his three RBI.  The third baseman tripled as well, his second of 2019.  Perez and Gorman each swiped a bag.

Wednesday’s games:  vs. eighth-place Beloit (12-22) (OAK).  Game 1 – 11:05 am CT, Alvaro Seijas (1-4, 2.70)/Diego Cordero (2-1, 1.45)

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 10, 2019

photo: Rangel Ravelo (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 1-2 on Thursday. Despite Player of the Day Rangel Ravelo’s three hits and three RBI, Memphis bullpen failed in extra innings. Peoria’s offense was lacking and Palm Beach’s contest was suspended. Springfield won its fourth straight to pull out of last place.

Results from games played Thursday, May 9th.

Iowa 9 at Memphis 8 (11)

Rangel Ravelo (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

Memphis’ bullpen could not prevent five extra-inning tallies in their 9-8 defeat to Iowa in 11.  The second-place Redbirds (18-16) have lost two of their initial three games to the first-place Cubs whom they trail by five games in the standings.

Jesus Cruz (L, 1-3) yielded five runs, three earned, on two hits, two walks and a balk in one plus.  Chasen Shreve recorded the final three outs but not before allowing all three inherited runners to score.

All four runs charged to Jake Woodford in his five-inning stint resulted from a pair of two-run home runs comprising two of the three hits and two walks allowed.  The righty hit one batter.

Hunter Cervenka and Ryan Helsley combined to hold the opposition scoreless over the next three frames, with Helsley working around a hit and two free passes over two innings.  Ryan Meisinger retired one batter and allowed a hit and walk before giving way to Tommy Layne, who struck out his only two batters.

Half of Memphis’ eight runs were generated by two-run bombs off the bats of Rangel Ravelo and Joe Hudson.  Player of the Day Ravelo’s blast was one of his three hits in five at bats, along with a double, two runs scored and three RBI.  Hudson generated a pinch hit home run that brought his team within one in the 11th.  The home team produced six hits in all with five of their eight runs unearned.

Friday’s game: vs. Iowa (23-11) (CHC), 7:05 pm CT, Genesis Cabrera (1-2, 7.06)

Springfield 7 vs. Northwest Arkansas 4

Austin Warner (Springfield Cardinals FANatic Photos)

The S-Cards opened a six-game home stand with a 7-4 victory over Northwest Arkansas.  The win, the team’s fourth in a row, lifts Springfield (13-20) into third place in the North Division, 8 ½ games behind Arkansas (SEA).

Springfield had a balanced offensive attack as three players each had two of the team’s 10 hits:  Brian O’Keefe, Justin Williams and Jose Martinez.  O’Keefe went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored out of the eight hole while the others went 2-for-4 with a double. Williams touched home once with an RBI.  Chris Chinea added his fifth home run of 2019, a solo shot that was part of the S-Cards’ four-run sixth. Johan Mieses plated two.

Austin Warner (W, 1-2) delivered a quality start, allowing just two runs through seven before serving up a two-run bomb with none gone in the eighth. Warner went seven plus frames giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits, including two long balls. The southpaw did not issue a free pass.

Jacob Patterson recorded two outs but jammed the sacks full via a hit, walk and hit batsman before handing the ball to Seth Elledge.  Elledge ended the threat with a force at third then tossed a clean ninth.

Friday’s game:  vs. fourth-place Northwest Arkansas (12-20) (KC), 7:10 pm CT, Harold Arauz (0-2, 8.44)

Palm Beach at Bradenton – suspended

The road series opener for Palm Beach at Bradenton was suspended due to rain in the middle of the third inning with the Marauders leading 1-0.  The remainder of the nine-inning game will be completed as part of a double-header on Friday, May 10th, with the nightcap shortened to seven innings.

Friday’s games:  at second-place Bradenton (20-12) (PIT).  Game one – 5:00 pm ET, Perry DellaValle (1-2, 2.25)/TBA

South Bend 4, Peoria 1

Freddy Pacheco (Peoria Chiefs)

The Cubs took down the visiting Chiefs in the series opener while ending 15-16 Peoria’s modest two-game win streak. South Bend plated two in the second (earned) and another in the third (unearned) against Chiefs starter Alvaro Seijas (L, 1-4). The right-hander allowed eight hits, no walks, hit two batters and fanned two over five innings.

Down 3-0 in the sixth, Peoria got some offense going as Ivan Herrera doubled and Brady Whalen singled him home. However, the Chiefs defense gave the run back on an unearned score in the seventh with Freddy Pacheco on the mound. The 21-year old right-hander yielded three hits, a walk and struck out four over the final three frames with just the unearned run on his record.

With two hits each, Herrera and Whalen had four of Peoria’s six hits on the night. The man batting between them in the no. 3 spot, Nolan Gorman, went 0-for-4 including two strikeouts as his slump continues.

Right fielder Lars Nootbaar (fielding) and second baseman Edwin Figuera (throwing) committed the miscues that led to the pair of unearned runs.

Friday’s game:  at Sound Bend (18-15) (ChC), 6:35 pm CT, Jacob Schlesener (0-3, 14.40).

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 8, 2019

photo: Anthony Shew (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 2-2 on Tuesday with Springfield and Peoria each putting one in the win column. Memphis fell despite starter Anthony Shew’s fine mound effort and Palm Beach lost a close road decision as bullpens faltered.

Results from games played Tuesday, May 7th.

Iowa 6 at Memphis 5

Anthony Shew (Springfield Cardinals FANatic Photos)

The second-place Redbirds’ big four-game home set versus the division-leading Cubs opened with a thud, a 6-5 defeat.  It was the third straight loss for Memphis (17-15) and Iowa’s eight consecutive victory as the Cubs have opened up a five-game division lead over the Redbirds.

Unable to hold a 4-0 lead through six innings, the Memphis bullpen wears the horns for the defeat.  Chasen Shreve began the skid, yielding two tallies on three hits and a base-on-balls in the seventh.  Jesus Cruz (L, 1-2) (BS, 2) recorded just one out, surrendering four runs on two walks, a hit batsman and a bases-clearing triple.

Cruz’ final runner scored via a sac bunt with Tommy Layne on the mound.  Layne walked one and hit another with two retired.  Ryan Meisinger struck out the side in the ninth, but the offense could not rally.

The bullpen’s results spoiled a truly stellar outing by Player of the Day Anthony Shew.  The 25-year old fanned eight over the initial six frames, holding Iowa scoreless on a hit and four walks.  55 of his 92 pitches went for strikes with five ground- and three fly-ball outs. Shew has yet to be scored upon through his first two Memphis starts.

Memphis’ 10 hits were spread among eight players.  Tyler O’Neill went 3-for-4 with a run scored, as the only Redbird with more than one hit.  Right fielder Adolis Garcia launched a grand slam that put his team up 4-0 after three and catcher Joe Hudson added a solo bomb in the eighth.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Iowa (22-10) (CHC), 11:05 am CT, Austin Gomber (4-0, 2.97)

Springfield 9 at Frisco 2

Conner Capel (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

Dylan Carlson and Conner Capel led the S-Cards to a 9-2 victory at Frisco, as Springfield took three of four from the RoughRiders (18-14) (TEX).  Despite their first road series win of the season, the Cards (12-20) remain mired in last place in the North Division, 8 ½ games behind Arkansas (SEA).

Carlson and Capel garnered three hits each in five at bats with two runs scored with one of Capel’s hits a three-run knock comprising three of his four driven in.  Carlson added his fifth stolen base of the season.  Three of their teammates had one hit each.

Evan Kruczynski built upon his previously season-best May 2nd start with his first quality performance of 2019.  The lefty limited the South Division leaders to two runs on five hits and a walk in six frames, earning his first win in four decisions.  Kruczynski fanned five with 58 of his 92 pitches going for strikes.  Junior Gonzalez struck out three over the next two innings before Merandy Gonzalez tossed a one-two-three ninth.

Wednesday’s game:  Off

Palm Beach 3 at Daytona 4

Julio Rodriguez (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The Beach Birds dropped the second game of three at Daytona, 4-3, evening the road series at one game apiece.  Third-place Palm Beach (18-13) trails Fort Myers (MIN) by 3 ½ games in the South Division.

Angel Rondon tossed a strong effort, limiting the Tortugas to two runs on six hits and two walks over six innings.  The righty plunked one batter.

Rondon departed with the game knotted at 2-2, but Mitchel Osnowitz (L, 0-1) was not impressive in his 2019 debut.  Osnowitz permitted two runs, one earned, on three hits and a free pass in his only inning of work.  Bryan Dobzanski tossed a clean eighth.

Palm Beach’s offense centered around catcher Julio Rodriguez, who went 3-for 4 with a two-run home run from the clean-up spot.  The long ball was Rodriguez’ fourth of the season.  The only other PB-Card with more than one of the team’s nine hits was Luken Baker, who singled twice in five at bats and scored when Rodriguez went yard.  Defensively, Rodriguez committed a throwing error and second baseman Nick Dunn bobbled a fielding opportunity.

Wednesday’s game:  at Daytona (15-16) (CIN), 7:05 pm ET, Edgar Gonzalez (1-5, 4.33)

Peoria 9 at West Michigan 6

Edwin Figuera (Peoria Chiefs)

The Chiefs rallied past the Whitecaps, 9-6, evening the road series at one game apiece with one on tap.  Peoria (14-15) is in fifth place in the Western Division, 5 ½ games in back of Quad Cities (HOU).

A day after almost being no hit by West Michigan, the visitors’ offense banged out nine runs on 11 hits, including a six tallies over the final four innings that flipped a 6-3 deficit into the final margin of victory.  Delvin Perez and Edwin Figuera led the way. Both went 3-for-5 with Perez crossing home twice and Figuera once, and the latter drove in three.

The only Peoria players to get an extra-base hit were Nolan Gorman and Brady Whalen.  Gorman doubled once in three at bats with a walk and two runs scored while Whalen went 1-for-2 with a double, run scored and two RBI’s.  Both players reached once via a hit-by-pitch. Lars Nootbaar singled, walked and plated three.

On the mound it was a relatively short night for Cole Aker, who could not finish the fourth.  The Tennessee native yielded five runs on five hits and four base-on-balls in just 3 1/3.

Michael Brettell’s fourth appearance since being activated was a dandy.  The 21-year-old retired the fourth’s final two batters, stranding the bases full of Aker’s runners before holding the Whitecaps to a single score on two hits and a walk over three more frames.  Thomas St. Clair worked around two walks for two clean innings, picking up his first save of 2019.

Wednesday’s game:  at West Michigan (14-16) (DET), 10:00 am CT, Diego Cordero (2-1, 1.15)

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 6, 2019

photo: Leandro Cedeño (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

St. Louis’ minors went 3-2 on Sunday, with Memphis splitting. Player of the Day Leandro Cedeño had three hits, including a grand slam, in Peoria’s win. Springfield came back late but Palm Beach was almost no-hit.

Results from games played Sunday, May 5th.

Memphis 11 at Nashville 2 (7) – Game 1
Memphis 5 at Nashville 7 (7) – Game 2

Tyler O’Neill (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

Following Saturday’s rainout, the Redbirds (17-12) split their series-opening double-header at Nashville, claiming Game 1, 11-2, but falling in the finale, 7-5.

John Nogowski and Tyler O’Neill paced the 12-hit effort in the opener. The first baseman went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two driven in and the outfielder homered twice and plated four.  Two other Memphis players had two hits each:  Edmundo Sosa and Andrew Knizner.  Knizner added a double to his solo bomb and knocked in two.  Sosa doubled twice and crossed home once.

Genesis Cabrera (W, 1-2) yielded four hits and three walks over five innings, with both tallies charged to him coming on solo shots.  The lefty struck out five.  Ryan Meisinger fanned two over the final two frames, allowing one hit.

Reliever Chris Ellis took the loss in the nightcap, his first in as many decisions.  Ellis gave up two runs on three hits and two walks in 2 1/3 while allowing both inherited runners to cross in the Sounds’ four-run third.  Ryan Helsley recorded the first seven outs and was charged with four tallies on four hits and two walks.  Hunter Cervenka was tagged with an unearned run on three hits, a free pass and second baseman Sosa’s fielding error.

Redbirds with a multi-hit performance were shortstop Drew Robinson and center fielder Lane Thomas.  Robinson singled twice in four at bats with an RBI and caught stealing at the top of the order.  Thomas went 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and stolen base out of the six hole.

Monday’s game:  at Nashville (9-21) (TEX), 6:35 pm CT, Daniel Ponce de Leon (2-1, 3.57)

Springfield 8 at Frisco 6

Evan Mendoza (Andrew Miller/Palm Beach Cardinals)

A four-run fifth and a late comeback propelled Springfield (10-20) over Frisco, 8-6.  Each team has won one of the road series initial two games with two to play.

Evan Mendoza’s opposite field two-run triple into the right field corner capped the scoring in the fifth. It knocked in Kramer Robertston (single) and Dylan Carlson (walk).  Johan Mieses worked a free pass with one gone before advancing to second on a single by Scott Hurst.  Mieses raced home on Robertson’s single and Hurst scored on a wild pitch, breaking a 3-3 tie.

The visitors generated eight hits in all with Mendoza and Irving Lopez both going 2-for-5.  Robertson, Mieses and Hurst each touched home twice, the latter two providing the margin of victory in the ninth.

Johan Oviedo finished an out shy of a quality start in his Double-A debut, yielding four runs, three earned, on seven hits and two base-on-balls in 5 2/3 and 100 pitches.  The righty plunked one batter.

Junior Fernandez recorded two outs, permitting a run on two hits and a walk while stranding Oviedo’s last runner.  Merandy Gonzalez retired both batters faced, leaving two inherited runners aboard.

The tally allowed by Seth Elledge (W, 2-2) (BS,3) in the eighth re-tied the game at six all, putting the 22-year-old in line for the win after the Redbirds scored two runs, one earned, in the home half of the ninth, with the final run scoring on Irving Lopez’ single.  John Fasola worked around a two-out single for his second save.

Monday’s game:  at Frisco (18-12) (TEX), 7:05 pm CT, Williams Perez (2-1, 5.81)

Fort Myers 4 at Palm Beach 0

Perry DellaValle (Joseph Freiday Sr. photo)

An eighth inning double by Chase Pinder was all that stood between the Beach Birds and a Miracle no-hitter in their 4-0 home loss to Fort Myers (20-10) (MIN).  The four-game losing skid by Palm Beach (17-12) includes a three-game sweep by the first-place Miracle.

The Beach Birds managed just two base runners – Pinder’s double plus a walk by Rayder Ascanio.  Ascanio committed a fielding error at third, resulting in two unearned tallies.

Perry DellaValle took the tough loss, his second in three decisions, permitting three runs, one earned, on seven hits in 6 2/3.  He did not issue a free pass and struck out five.

Ramon Santos recorded six outs while yielding a tally on four hits and two walks.  Bryan Dobzanski retired his only batter, stranding two inherited runners on.

Monday’s game:  at Daytona (14-15) (CIN), 7:05 pm ET, Tommy Parsons (league debut)

Peoria 11 vs. Bowling Green 3

Leandro Cedeno (Peoria Chiefs)

Player of the Day Leandro Cedeño’s grand slam launched Peoria (13-14) past Bowling Green (17-13) (TB), 11-3, in the rubber game of the three-game series at Dozer Park.

The long ball capped a five-run first that drove the Hot Rods’ starter from the game before he recorded an out. The bomb was the first of Cedeño’s three hits in five at bats and one of three Peoria home runs on the night.  Brendan Donovan also went yard with a three-run eighth-inning blast.  Donovan added a single to his home run in four at bats, touching home twice with three RBI.

The final Peoria player to go long was right fielder Wadye Infante, who went 1-for-2 with a walk and run scored due to his solo shot.  Defensively, Infante was credited with an outfield assist at home.

The offense masked a rather unusual mound effort in which five Chiefs hurlers combined for 10 free passes issued against just three hits allowed.  Starter Jacob Schlesinger was the main culprit, walking seven and plunking two in 2 2/3 innings.  The right-hander escaped with only one run charged to him, on a hit-by-pitch.

Franyel Casadilla (W, 1-0) limited the damage to Schlesinger by stranding the bases full in the third.  Casadilla retired all four batters faced.

But the pitching highlight for the 2,500 plus attendees was likely an appearance by Carlos Martinez who began his rehab.  Martinez tossed a one-two-three fifth, recording three infield groundball outs on six pitches, five strikes.

Freddy Pacheco struck out four in two frames but gave up two runs on two hits and a base-on-balls.  Fabian Blanco maneuvered around a hit and two walks during his two-inning stint.

Monday’s game:  at West Michigan (13-15) (DET), 6:05 pm CT, Kyle Leahy (1-1, 4.35)

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 3, 2019

photo: Ivan Herrera (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

In a 2-1 Thursday across the St. Louis Cardinals system, catchers excelled. Joe Hudson’s bat spearheaded Memphis’ victory and Ivan Herrera accounted for 75% of Peoria’s offense, including the winning run. Springfield’s bats were shut out and Palm Beach was rained out.

Results from games played Thursday, May 2nd.

Memphis 8 at New Orleans 4

Joe Hudson (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The Redbirds banged out 14 hits on their way to an 8-4 win at New Orleans (15-12) (MIA).  Second-place Memphis (15-12) salvaged a split of the four-game series and remain two behind first-place Iowa (CHC) in the standings.

Right fielder Adolis Garcia and catcher Joe Hudson led the onslaught with three hits apiece.  Both players launched a solo shot with Garcia doubling once in five at bats and touching home twice.  Hudson, our co-Player of the Day, was even more productive with a double in four at bats plus four knocked in.

Lane Thomas and Rangel Ravelo each went 2-for-4 with an RBI, with Thomas scoring twice and Ravelo doubling.  Thomas added his third stolen base of 2019 while Garcia was one-for-two in steal attempts and was picked off once.

Austin Gomber (W, 4-0) fanned seven in five frames, with two of the three runs charged to him coming on a two-run home run.  The lefty scattered seven hits and three walks.

Ryan Meisinger, the first of four Memphis relievers, worked around a hit and two free passes for a clean sixth.  Hunter Cervenka permitted a run on a hit and two walks the next inning.  Chris Beck and Chris Ellis each retired all three batters faced.

Friday’s game:  at fourth-place Nashville (8-19) (TEX), 6:35 pm CT, Jake Woodford (2-0, 1.20)

Springfield 0 at Amarillo 1

Evan Kruczynski (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The S-Cards (9-18) were on the wrong end of a pitching duel, dropping a 1-0 decision at Amarillo.  Each team has won one of the series’ first two games with one yet to play.

The difference in the game pivoted on one of Springfield’s miscues. A throwing error by shortstop Kramer Robertson led to an unearned tally charged to Evan Kruczynski (L, 0-3) in the first of his five innings on the mound.  The outing was the southpaw’s best effort in six starts to date, as Kruczynski limited the home team to three hits while not walking a batter.

Connor Jones, John Fasola and Seth Elledge each tossed an inning. Jones worked around two free passes before Fasola faced the minimum.  Elledge walked one.

The visitors were held to just three hits as well but Robertson worked three free passes.  A double by Chris Chinea was the game’s only hit to go for extra bases.

Friday’s game:  at Amarillo (11-16) (SD), 7:05 pm CT, Austin Warner (0-2, 6.63)

Palm Beach at St. Lucie – cancelled

The series finale for Palm Beach (17-9) at St. Lucie (14-12) (NYM) was cancelled due to inclement weather.  The game will not be made up since the two teams do not meet again during the first half of the season. The PB-Cards are tied with Bradenton (PIT) for first place, a half of a game ahead of Fort Myers.

Friday’s game: vs. second-place Fort Myers (17-10) (MIN), 6:30 pm ET, Edgar Gonzalez (1-4, 3.32)

Peoria 4 vs. Dayton 3 (10)

Ivan Herrera (Peoria Chiefs)

Single tallies in the ninth and 10th rallied the Chiefs to a 4-3 victory over the Dragons (8-18) (CIN).  Peoria (11-13) has won five straight, including a three-game sweep of Dayton.

Down 3-2 with an out to go, consecutive singles by Wadye Infante, Brandon Riley and Delvin Perez knotted the game at three-all, sending the contest into extra innings.  Co-Player of the Day Ivan Herrera’s 10th-inning single drove in pinch runner Edwin Figuera, who ran for Nolan Gorman after the latter began the frame at second.

Herrera’s hit was his third single of the day in five at bats, as the catcher and clean-up hitter drove in three of his team’s four runs.  Perez and Riley each had two hits, with Perez knocking in one and Riley working a base-on-balls.

Cole Aker tossed his best start of the season, a strong six-inning outing in which the righty limited his opponents to a lone run on three hits and three walks with six strikeouts.  Michael Brettell (BS, 1) was tagged for an unearned score in his second inning of work due to a throwing error by shortstop Perez.  Fabian Blanco yielded a ninth-inning run on two hits but pitched a one-two-three 10th for his first win in two decisions.

Friday’s game:  vs. Bowling Green (16-11) (TB), 6:35 pm CT, Diego Cordero (2-1, 1.46)

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 1, 2019

photo: Johan Oviedo/Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation

St. Louis’ minors went 1-1 on Tuesday, with first-place Palm Beach winning behind the duo of Player of the Day, starter Johan Oviedo, and outfielder Justin Toerner. Memphis dropped a road game as the offense was quiet.

Results from games played Tuesday, April 30th.

Memphis 1 at New Orleans 3

Adolis Garcia (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The Redbirds lacked timely hitting in their 3-1 defeat at New Orleans.  Second-place Memphis (13-12) has dropped the first two games of the four-game set and are 1 ½ games behind Iowa (CHC) in the division.

The visitors outhit their hosts, eight to five, but could not come through when needed, going 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position.  Their sole tally came against New Orleans’ bullpen after Ramon Urias worked a free pass with one gone in the seventh and raced home on Francisco Peña’s pinch-hit double to center.

Rangel Ravelo was one of two Memphis players with more than one hit, singling twice in four at bats but also with two of his team’s 11 strikeouts.  Right fielder Adolis Garcia also went 2-for-4 and was credited with an outfield assist at home.

Daniel Ponce de Leon (L, 2-1) held his opponents to one hit and two walks through his initial five frames but surrendered back-to-back singles followed by a home run in his final inning of work.  The righty struck out five.  In his Triple-A return, working in relief, Ryan Helsley allowed a hit over the last two innings.

Wednesday’s game:  at New Orleans (15-10) (MIA), 6:30 pm CT, Anthony Shew (league debut)

Springfield – off

The S-Cards (8-17) head out on a seven-game road trip looking for their first victory of the season away from Hammons Field and riding a three-game losing streak.  The fourth-place team trails Arkansas (SEA) by 8 ½ games in the North Division.

Wednesday’s game:  at Amarillo (10-15) (SD), 7:05 pm CT, Williams Perez (1-1, 5.76)

Johan Oviedo (Peoria Chiefs)

Palm Beach 9 at St. Lucie 1

The Beach Birds’ offense and pitching were both on display in their 9-1 trouncing of the Mets in the road series opener.  Palm Beach (17-8) is tied for first with Bradenton (PIT), winners of four straight.

Nick Plummer led the PB-Cards’ 16-hit attack, going 3-for-5 with a run scored out of the eight hole.  The left fielder was unsuccessful in his only stolen base attempt.

Justin Toerner (State College Spikes)

Four Palm Beach players had two hits each – Justin Toerner, Jose Martinez, Yariel Gonzalez and Nick Dunn.  Toerner and Martinez both went 2-for-4 and walked twice and once, respectively, but Toerner provided a big blow with a three-run long ball comprising three of his four RBI.  Gonzalez and Dunn each singled twice in five at bats with one driven in. Gonzalez touched home once.

Johan Oviedo (W, 5-0) fanned seven over six innings, scattering six hits and three walks, resulting in a single tally.  Patrick Dayton, Bryan Dobzanski and Ben Yokley each tossed a scoreless frame.

Wednesday’s game:  at Fourth-place St. Lucie (13-12) (NYM), 6:30 pm ET, Jorge Rondon (3-0, 2.08)

Peoria vs. Dayton – postponed

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – April 29, 2019

St. Louis’ minors went 1-3 on Sunday with Peoria again postponed. Player of the Day Jake Woodford’s mound performance keyed Memphis’ double-header split. Palm Beach dropped a low-scoring affair and Springfield couldn’t recover from a rough start.

Results from games played Sunday, April 28th

Memphis 5 at Omaha 1 (7) – Game 1
Memphis 10 at Omaha 11 (7) – Game 2

Jake Woodford (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The Redbirds split their double-header road series finale at the Storm Chasers, claiming Game 1, 5-1, but coughing up a seven-run lead to lose the finale in walk-off fashion, 11-10.  Memphis (13-9) claimed the five-game set, four games to one.

A four-run fifth provided the opener’s difference, with the inning propelled by a pair of back-to-back long balls.  Adolis Garcia’s seventh home run plated Max Schrock (double), breaking a 1-1 tie, right ahead of Lane Thomas’ first Memphis bomb of 2019.

Thomas and Andrew Knizner each had two hits. The center fielder went 2-for-3 with his solo shot that was one of his two RBI.  Knizner singled twice in four at bats, touched home once and knocked in one.  Memphis had seven hits in all.

Player of the Day Jake Woodford (W, 2-0) mastered Omaha (9-13) over 6 2/3 innings, limiting his opponent to a run on four hits and three walks.  The 22-year-old fanned six with three ground- to six fly- ball outs.  Chris Beck retired his only batter thus stranding Woodford’s final runner.

Offense was on display in the nightcap as Memphis’ bullpen faltered.  The seven-inning affair featured a combined 25 hits generating 21 tallies.  All nine Redbirds’ starters garnered at least one of their 12 hits, led by Francisco Peña.  The catcher went 3-for-4 with a double and two-run bomb comprising two of his three RBI.  Right fielder Drew Robinson also went yard with Tommy Edman (walk) aboard, as this two-run blast opened his team’s scoring in the first.  Robinson added a single and two walks in three at bats.  Knizner launched a home run with John Nogowski (double) aboard, his only hit in four at bats.

Ryan Meisinger (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

Ryan Meisinger’s start was the highlight of the Redbirds’ pitching effort.  The Radford product faced just one over the minimum while striking out five in three scoreless frames.  It was Meisinger’s first start in nine appearances.

But the four hurlers following Meisinger to the mound did not fare well.  Tommy Layne’s four-run fourth included four hits, a base-on-balls and four runs, three via a home run.  Chris Ellis recorded four outs but yielded five tallies on seven hits and a walk.

Yet the visitors went into the home half of the seventh up 10-9 and tasked John Fasola with acquiring three outs for the victory.  Fasola (L, 0-2) had recorded the sixth’s final two outs, leaving one of two inherited runners aboard, but departed after sandwiching two free passes between two outs.  Hunter Cervenka (BS, 2) loaded the bases via a free pass then yielded an RBI single to end the game.

Monday’s game:  at New Orleans (13-10) (MIA), 6:30 pm CT, Genesis Cabrera (0-1, 10.22)

Frisco 6 at Springfield 4

Jacob Patterson (Palm Beach Cardinals)

One big inning sent the S-Cards to a 6-4 home loss to Frisco on Sunday.  Springfield (8-16) has won one of the series’ first three contests with one yet to play.

Casey Meisner (L, 0-2) was scored upon in each of his three frames on the bump, with the scoring capped by four runs in his third and final inning of work.  The righty gave up six runs, four earned, in all, on seven hits, including two home runs, and a base-on-balls.

A trio of Springfield relievers kept the RoughRiders off the board the rest of the way.  Jacob Patterson struck out four in three innings, yielding a hit and walk.  Luke Gregerson continued his seemingly endless rehab assignment with a one-two-three seventh before Roel Ramirez notched two K’s to go with one free pass over the last two frames.

Two S-Cards produced multi-hit efforts:  Dylan Carlson and Johan Mieses.  Carlson singled and doubled in four at bats with a walk and run scored while right fielder Mieses went 2-for-5 with a run scored.  Defensively, Mieses committed both of his team’s miscues but he was credited with an outfield assist at home.

Monday’s game: vs. Frisco (15-9) (TEX), 11:10 am CT, Harold Arauz (0-0, 4.05)

Palm Beach 1 at Fort Myers 2

Perry DellaValle (Joseph Freiday Sr. photo)

On Sunday, Palm Beach (16-8) dropped another close decision to the Miracle, 2-1, and lost the four-game road set, one-game-to-three.

Perry DellaValle (L, 1-1) limited Fort Myers (15-9) (MIN) to just four hits over six frames.  Unfortunately, two of those hits occurred back-to-back in consecutive innings, resulting in two runs.

Ronnie Williams loaded the bases on three consecutive singles to open the seventh but escaped the jam on two force plays at home plus a ground out.  Patrick Dayton tossed a clean eighth.

The visitors’ only score came on an RBI single by Justin Toerner that drove in Julio Rodriguez (single).  Toerner went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and RBI and was the only PB-Card with more than one of the team’s seven hits.

Monday’s game:  Off

Peoria at Beloit – postponed

The Chiefs and the Snappers were unable to get in their scheduled twin bill on Sunday due to the effects of a recent snowstorm that created unplayable field conditions in Wisconsin.  Since Peoria (8-13) does not return to Beloit (8-12) (OAK) during the season’s first half, the contests will take place at Dozer Field in Peoria during the May 13-15 series with details to be announced.

Monday’s game:  off

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – April 26, 2019

photo: Anthony Shew (Springfield Cardinals FANatic Photos)

The St. Louis Cardinals system had a clean 3-0 Thursday, with Peoria rained out. Tommy Edman drove in the comeback winner for Memphis, Johan Oviedo and Nick Dunn paced Palm Beach and Player of the Day Anthony Shew tossed six scoreless innings for Springfield.

Results from games played Thursday, April 25th.

Memphis 6 at Omaha 4

Tommy Edman (Steve Mitchell/Imagn)

The road Redbirds capitalized on a ninth-inning Omaha miscue to rally past the Storm Chasers, 6-4, and claim a 2-0 series lead with three contests remaining.  The victory keeps second place Memphis (11-9) two games behind Iowa (CHC) in the American Northern Division standings.

Trailing 4-2 with three outs to go, Rangel Ravelo reached on a fielding error by Omaha’s first sacker.  Adolis Garcia’s triple and an RBI single by Andrew Knizner knotted it up at four all.  Francisco Pena worked a free pass but it was Tommy Edman’s line drive single up the middle off a new Omaha hurler that gave the visitors the lead and advanced runners to second and third.  Drew Robinson was handed an intentional base-on-balls, leaving the pitcher nowhere to put John Nogowski after he walked him as well.

The Redbirds banged out 10 hits, paced by Edman and Robinson with three apiece.  Two of Edman’s three hits in five at bats went for extra bases, a double and solo shot that was part of his two runs scored and two knocked in.  Robinson singled three times in four at bats with the aforementioned walk.  The only other Memphis player with more than one hit was Ramon Urias, who went 2-for-4.

The win was claimed by reliever Hunter Cervenka who struck out two in two innings for his first organizational victory in two decisions.  The southpaw permitted a two-out single in the eighth.

Alex Reyes struggled with control during his 2 2/3-inning start, allowing three runs on three hits, two walks and two wild pitches.  The righty left with only one in, but with the sacks jammed. John Fasola allowed two of three runners inherited from Reyes to score plus one of his own during his 2 1/3 frames on the bump.  Fasola yielded two hits and three walks while hitting one batter.

Chasen Shreve quieted Omaha’s bats while providing a two-inning bridge to Cervenka.  The Nevada native fanned four.

Friday’s game:  at third-place Omaha (9-11) (KC), 7:05 pm CT, Austin Gomber (2-0, 3.22)

Springfield 8 vs. Amarillo 0

Anthony Shew (Springfield Cardinals FANatic Photos)

Anthony Shew tossed six strong frames supported by his team’s 12-hit attack as the S-Cards trounced Amarillo (9-12) (SD), 8-0, at Hammons Field for a split of the four-game set.  Fourth-place Springfield (7-14) is 6 ½ in back of Arkansas (SEA) in the North Division standings.

Player of the Day Shew (W, 1-2) used seven strikeouts to neutralize five hits and a walk with eight ground- and two fly- ball outs.  Roel Ramirez worked around four hits and a free pass for two clean frames before Kodi Whitley tossed a one-two-three ninth.

Lead-off batter Irving Lopez spearheaded the offensive effort, going 3-for-5 and touching home twice.  The only other S-Card with a multi-hit performance was Elehuris Montero, who singled twice in three at bats with a walk, run scored and RBI.

Tyler O’Neill’s only hit in four at bats was a solo long ball. It was the outfielder’s first safety in three rehab contests.  Conner Capel followed in the seventh with a two-run bomb scoring Chris Chinea (triple).  Capel went 1-for-3 with a free pass, crossed home twice and drove in two.

Friday’s game:  vs. Frisco (13-8) (TEX), 7:10 pm CT, Williams Perez (1-1, 7.50)

Palm Beach 7 at Fort Myers 1

Johan Oviedo (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

The Beach Birds kicked off their seven-game road trip with a 7-1 win at Fort Myers.  Palm Beach (16-5) holds a three-game margin over second-place Bradenton (PIT) in the South Division and their .762 winning percentage is easily the best in the Florida State League.

The visitors generated 11 hits with Nick Dunn leading the charge.  The second baseman went 3-for-4 with a double, came home once and knocked in one.  Two PB-Cards had two hits apiece in four at bats:  Chase Pinder and Yariel Gonzalez.  Pinder scored once and drove in another while Gonzalez garnered two RBI.

Shortstop Jose Martinez reached base three times, going 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored.  Nick Plummer touched home both times he reached base, singling once in three at bats with a walk.

Johan Oviedo (W, 4-0) continued a string of noteworthy Florida State League performances, yielding a lone tally on three hits and three walks in 6 2/3.  Three of the right-hander’s six baserunners came in his last inning of work.

Ben Yokley retired all four batters faced, leaving Oviedo’s final two runners on base.  Bryan Dobzanski faced the minimum.

Friday’s game:  at third-place Fort Myers (12-9) (MIN), 6:30 pm ET, Edgar Gonzalez (1-3, 2.41)

Peoria at Beloit – postponed

Game 1 of four between the Chiefs and Snappers at Beloit was rained out and has been rescheduled as part of a Friday double-header.  Peoria (6-13) remains in last place in the Western Division and trails first-place Burlington (LAA) by 6 ½ games.

Friday’s games: at sixth-place Beloit (8-10) (OAK).  Game 1 – 5:05 pm CT, Diego Cordero (1-1, 1.96)/Kyle Leahy (0-1, 5.06)

Cardinals Minor League Notebook – April 24, 2019

photo: C.J. Saylor (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

St. Louis’ minors went 1-2 on Tuesday behind a ninth-inning rally by red-hot Palm Beach. Our Player of the Day is Beach Birds’ reliever C.J. Saylor, who picked up the win by fanning all six batters faced. In their losses, the beleaguered Springfield and Peoria staffs yielded a total of 17 runs.

Results from games played Tuesday, April 23rd.

Memphis – off

The Redbirds were idle on Tuesday before heading out on a 13-game road excursion, their longest road trip of the 2019 season.  First up for Memphis (9-9) is a five-game set against Omaha with whom the Redbirds are tied for second place in the American Northern Division, two games behind Iowa (CHC).

Wednesday’s game:  at Omaha (9-9) (KC), 6:35 pm CT, Harold Arauz (1-0, 9.00)

Amarillo 9 at Springfield 6

Scott Hurst (Memphis Redbirds)

The S-Cards could not overcome the Sod Poodles’ steady offensive attack, falling to Amarillo at Hammons Field, 9-6.  Each team has claimed one of the series’ first two games with two on tap.  Springfield (6-13) remains firmly in fourth and last place in the North Division, 6 ½ in back of Arkansas (SEA).

The visitors scored in five of nine innings, including the contest’s first and last frames.  Starter Casey Meisner went just four innings, permitting five runs on eight hits and two walks.  One of those eight hits was a two-run bomb.

Still, Meisner left the game with his team up 6-5, thanks to a five-run fourth, but Mike O’Reilly (L, 0-1) handed the lead right back to Amarillo.  O’Reilly was charged with three runs on three hits and two walks in two innings.

Connor Jones holds the distinction of being the only Springfield pitcher to keep the Sod Poodles off the board, limiting them to a hit and walk while retiring six.  Kodi Whitley gave up an unearned tally due to a lead-off walk, hit batsman, sac bunt and fielding error by second baseman Irving Lopez.

Eighth-place hitter Scott Hurst had a perfect night at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a base-on-balls, double, run scored and two driven in.  Kramer Robertson, the number seven batter, also reached base four times, singling and doubling in two at bats, working two free passes, touching home once and knocking in one.  The shortstop also swiped his second bag of 2019.

St. Louis outfielder Tyler O’Neill began his rehab assignment by going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts before being replaced in the field at the visitors half of the sixth.  Defensively, Lopez’ bobble was one of three Springfield miscues along with a fielding error by Hurst and Meisner’s throwing error.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Amarillo (8-11) (SD), 11:10 am CT, Austin Warner (0-2, 7.11)

Palm Beach 3 vs. Jupiter 2

C.J. Saylor (St. Louis Cardinals)

The Beach Birds rallied for two in the ninth to walk off with a 3-2 victory over the Hammerheads.  Palm Beach (14-5) has claimed both of the initial two of the three-game series and sit atop the South Division, two ahead of Bradenton (PIT) and Fort Myers (MIN).

Michael Perri’s first double of the season scored Rayder Ascanio from second after the latter reached on a single and advanced to second via a fielding error by Jupiter’s right fielder.  Perri’s hit, his second of the game in four at bats, knotted the game at two all.  The shortstop raced home with the winning margin after Nick Plummer lined a single to right.

Catcher Julio Rodriguez led his squad’s 12-hit attack, going 3-for-4 while batting second.  Ascanio, Perri and Plummer – the seven through nine batters – each had two hits. Ascanio singled twice in three at bats with two runs scored while Plummer joined Perri by going 2-for-4.

Reliever C.J. Saylor (W, 1-0) picked up the win by striking out all six batters faced.  The victory is the 25-year-old’s first since 2017, his rookie season.  With Palm Beach, Saylor is unscored upon in five appearances covering nine innings while allowing just three hits and three free passes.

Perry DellaValle went the first six innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits and a walk.  Ronnie Williams worked around a hit in the seventh.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. fifth-place Jupiter (7-11) (MIA), 6:30 pm ET, Angel Rondon (3-0, 2.30)

Quad Cities 8 at Peoria 0

Leandro Cedeno (Peoria Chiefs)

The Chiefs (6-12) were held to one hit in their 8-0 home defeat to the River Bandits.  The loss evens the three-game series at one game apiece.

Leandro Cedeño lined a single to left to open the seventh, halting a Quad Cities pitching duo in their no-hit bid.  Peoria managed just six base runners the entire game with two reaching scoring position.  Defensively, left fielder Cedeño committed his second miscue of 2019, leading to an unearned tally.

Alvaro Seijas (L, 1-2) fanned seven in five innings but fell prey to two solo long balls accounting for both earned runs he allowed.  The righty permitted five hits and two walks, resulting in three runs, two earned.

Four Chiefs hurlers tossed one inning apiece:  Evan Sisk, Fabian Blanco, Freddy Pacheco and Edgar Escobar.  Sisk was touched for a run on two hits and a walk while striking out two and picking off one.  Blanco and Pacheco each pitched a clean frame but Escobar yielded four runs on five hits and a base-on-balls.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Quad Cities (9-8) (HOU), 6:35 pm CT, Cole Aker (0-1, 11.42)
