2024 Cardinals Regular Season TV Schedule – AR, OK, TN, KY, MS

Fans in Arkansas, Oklahoma, as well as parts of Tennessee, Kentucky and Mississippi can find the channel for St. Louis Cardinals game telecasts on any given night this season.

“Will the Cardinals game be televised in my area and if so, where?”

In-market St. Louis Cardinals fans can subscribe to Bally Sports Midwest (BSM) to watch their favorite team in action. Out-of-market fans can use a package like MLB.tv or MLB Extra Innings to view the Cardinals on television or via streaming devices.

However, there is another important group of Cardinals fans who live outside of Bally Sports Midwest’s area, but firmly in Cardinals Country – in the states of Oklahoma and Arkansas as well as parts of Mississippi, Kentucky and Tennessee.

The good news for these viewers is that, depending on their system, they may be able to watch Cardinals telecasts this season on their regional Bally Sports Networks (RSNs). A rub can be that not every game is on, and sometimes the ones that are, get moved to alternate channels, making the quest to answer the above questions a daily chore.

When you think the games are on, but they really aren’t…

There is no clear pattern as to which Cardinals games are covered by the various RSNs and which are not. And the answer varies by game by RSN.

Be aware that even if a particular Cardinals game is shown on the master schedule, it may or may not actually be available to watch, based on what else is airing in the market on a given night.

Examples of these conflicts are the NBA and NHL seasons continuing in April and May, with schedules that are not fully defined in advance.

All is not lost – tips and tricks

Some of the RSNs do have an alternate channel, with the “Extra” suffix added, but even two channels are not always enough to carry all the required live content. And sometimes in these overlap areas, it is the Cardinals that get bumped. You may have to scour your local listings to find the Bally Sports Net Extra channel number, but the search should be worth it!

It is also important that web-savvy Bally RSN subscribers understand that all Bally Sports Midwest-covered Cardinals games are available via streaming. No matter which cable, satellite or streaming provider you use, you have an always-available alternative.

All Cardinals games are available for streaming by RSN subscribers on the Bally Sports app and BallySports.com.

The markets

Telecasts of Cardinals’ games on Bally Sports South and BSSO Extra are available in the Memphis, Evansville and Paducah/Harrisburg/Cape Girardeau DMAs (designated media area, or market), plus the counties of Union, Pontotoc, Yalobusha and Grenada in Mississippi.

Telecasts of Cardinals games on Bally Sports Southeast (BSSE) are available in the Memphis DMA, plus the counties of Union, Pontotoc, Yalobusha and Grenada in Mississippi.

For those in Oklahoma and Arkansas coverage areas, most Bally Midwest-originated games can be seen on Bally Sports Southwest or BSSW Extra.

Schedule by the numbers

RSN coverage began in spring training, but I did not have this information at that time. For completeness and comparison, the full 162-game regular season is shown.

Currently, 10 Cardinals games are on the schedule to be shown nationally on ESPN (2), FOX (6) and Apple TV (2), though that number could grow as the season progresses. As of now, that leaves 152 regular season contests, all of which are being televised by Bally Sports Midwest (BSM) and shown in-market on BSM (or BSM Extra, depending on any potential Blues’ schedule overlaps).

Between them, Bally Sports South and Bally Sports Southeast are televising in Tennessee, Kentucky and Mississippi 147 of the 152 regular season games featuring the Cardinals that originate from Bally Sports Midwest. The other five, all in April, are only available on the Bally Sports App, due to conflicts with other sports.

Similarly in Oklahoma and Arkansas with Bally Sports Southwest/Extra, 146 games will be available, with the other six, all in April, viewable only on the Bally App.

Cardinals Finalize Opening Day Roster

On Wednesday, the St. Louis Cardinals made their final changes to their Opening Day roster, adding speedy Victor Scott, sending down Jose Fermin and designating Jared Young for assignment.

The St. Louis Cardinals will open their 133rd season of play in the National League tomorrow afternoon (Thursday, March 28) when they visit the Los Angeles Dodgers at 1:10 p.m. PDT/3:10 p.m. CDT in the opening game of the 162-game Major League Baseball regular season.   

The team’s 26-player active roster includes six first-time Cardinals (Brandon Crawford, Ryan Fernandez, Kyle Gibson, Andrew Kittredge, Riley O’Brien and Victor Scott II), five rookies (Ryan Fernandez, Victor Scott II, Michael Siani, Riley O’Brien and Masyn Winn) and 13 players who were developed within the Cardinals organization.   

RHP Sonny Gray (15-day, right hamstring strain); RHP Keynan Middleton (15-day, right forearm flexor strain), LHP Drew Rom (15-day, left shoulder biceps tendinitis); OF/IF Tommy Edman (10-day, right wrist sprain); OF Lars Nootbaar (10-day, left rib contusion); OF Dylan Carlson (10-day, left AC sprain) will begin the season on the Injured List. All of the injured list players, except for Dylan Carlson, are backdated to March 25. Carlson’s injury is dated to March 26. 

The team selected the contract of Victor Scott II today, and optioned INF José Fermín to the Memphis (AAA) roster.  1B/OF Jared Young was placed on outright waivers, making room for Scott II on the team’s 40-player Major League roster. 

The following is the Cardinals 2024 Opening Day active roster and injured list:

Brian Walton’s take 

The only new news is in the fourth paragraph. We already knew Scott would be added to the 40-man and 26-man active rosters prior to Opening Day. Fermin seemed the obvious corresponding choice to be optioned out. The main unknown coming into Wednesday was which player would be removed from the 40-man to make room for Winn. That is Young. 

Victor Scott

The speedy center fielder Victor Scott will play daily – at least until Dylan Carlson or Tommy Edman are ready to come off the injured list. Scott, assigned no. 11 with St. Louis, is The Cardinal Nation’s no. 4 prospect. 

José Fermín

 Fermin is valuable as one of the few infielders in the upper levels who can play a credible shortstop. As Brandon Crawford was slowed by injury in camp, it allowed Fermin to remain up longer than he would have otherwise. He should be the primary shortstop for Memphis.  

Jared Young

Seemingly redundant as an infielder/outfielder with another brought in during the off-season, Alfonso Rivas, Young struggled mightily in spring training games, batting .091.  

The Cardinals have a week to determine Young’s immediate fate. The former Cub, age 28, could be claimed by another organization, released, traded or outrighted to the minor leagues. With so many other teams also making difficult cuts now, my guess is the latter, that Young will remain in the system and join Memphis.

Cardinals Set Opening Day Roster (Almost)

The St. Louis Cardinals cut their roster to 26 players but have one more addition and one more subtraction coming before Opening Day.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced following this afternoon’s game (Tuesday, March 26) that the team has reduced its Spring Training roster to 26 players, sending three players to the minors, with six players to be placed on the injured list. 

The team optioned LHP John King and C Pedro Pagés to the Memphis (AAA) roster, and re-assigned infielder Thomas Saggese to Memphis. 

The following six players will be placed on the Injured List to begin the season: 

RHP Sonny Gray (15-day, right hamstring strain); RHP Keynan Middleton (15-day, right forearm flexor strain), LHP Drew Rom (15-day, left shoulder biceps tendinitis); OF/IF Tommy Edman (10-day, right wrist sprain); OF Lars Nootbaar (10-day, left rib contusion); OF Dylan Carlson (10-day, left AC sprain).  

All of the injured list players, except for Dylan Carlson, will be backdated to March 25.  Carlson will be backdated to March 26. 

Brian Walton’s take 

While it might appear that the team is set for Opening Day at 26 players, it is not. Replacing Carlson, injured on Monday, will be center fielder Victor Scott, who has yet to added to both the 26-man and 40-man rosters. The player among the current 26 who is most likely to be sent down, in my estimation, is infielder Jose Fermin. The corresponding 40-man change is unknown – but it will only remain that way for a short while longer.  

King being sent down means right handers Riley O’Brien, Andre Pallante and Rule 5 pick Ryan Fernandez have made the opening bullpen. 

John King

King, acquired from Texas last July, has been sidelined by illness and last pitched for St. Louis on March 19. 

The lefty had an uneven camp with a 7.88 ERA on eight runs, seven earned, in eight innings. King allowed 15 hits and walked five against four strikeouts. He should be back with St. Louis later.  

Pedro Pagés

Pages, added to the 40-man in November, will serve as the third catcher in waiting and regular starter at Triple-A Memphis. 

In 25 spring at-bats, The Cardinal Nation’s no. 28 prospect had six hits including two doubles and a home run.  Pages drove in three, walked four and struck out seven times. His slash line is .240/.367.440/.807. 

Thomas Saggese

Saggese, the 2023 Texas League batting champion, was the last non-roster player in camp (prior to Scott’s planned return).  He showed off his offensive prowess in camp, with a slash line of .300/.364/.420/.784. This spring, Saggese had 50 plate appearances, just one off the team lead, and his 11 RBI tied for second-most on the Cardinals. 

This season, Saggese should be the regular second baseman for Triple-A Memphis.

Dylan Carlson’s Injury Opens Early Door for Victor Scott

St. Louis Cardinals center fielder Dylan Carlson will open 2024 on the injured list with his spot taken by speedy outfield prospect Victor Scott.  

Resulting from an outfield collision Monday evening with right fielder Jordan Walker, St. Louis Cardinals center fielder Dylan Carlson will open the regular season on the injured list. Carlson sprained the AC joint in his left shoulder and may be out for weeks. 

Carlson arrived in spring camp as the fourth outfielder but as Tommy Edman has been unable to play, Carlson was slated to be the everyday starter in center. The switch-hitter came on with the bat also, leading the team with 13 spring RBI.

Joining the 26-man roster replacing Carlson is The Cardinal Nation’s no. 5 prospect, speedster Victor Scott. Finishing 2023 at Double-A, Scott was one off the minor league lead in steals and was awarded the minor league Gold Glove for center field.

Scott played well in his first spring camp, but the Cardinals initially decided to go with Carlson as the starter and make Michael Siani the temporary reserve in center. To that end, Scott was reassigned to Triple-A on Sunday. Those plans have changed now. 

Siani remains the back up with Scott brought up to play for Carlson, who was playing for Edman. 

Carlson will become the sixth Cardinal to open 2024 on the IL, joining outfielders Edman and Lars Nootbaar plus pitchers Sonny Gray, Keynan Middleton and Drew Rom. 

At this point, the 40-man roster move needed to accommodate Scott has not been disclosed. Either one of the injured players may be placed on the 60-day injured list or a player such as Jared Young or Alfonso Rivas could be designated for assignment. 

The Cardinals must formalize their roster declarations prior to the season opener on Thursday in Los Angeles.

Cardinals Trim Spring Roster to 35

The St. Louis Cardinals made six roster cuts Saturday morning, optioning four and reassigning two non-roster players to minor league camp. Five of the six are position players, including our no. 4 prospect, Victor Scott.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today (Saturday, March 23) that the team has reduced its Spring Training roster to 35 players, sending six players to their minor league camp.

The team optioned RHP Nick Robertson, 1B Luken Baker, 1B/OF Alfonso Rivas III and 1B/OF Jared Young to the Memphis (AAA) roster, and re-assigned INF César Prieto and OF Victor Scott II to their minor league camp.

The team currently has 34 Major League roster players and one non-roster invitee remaining in its Major League camp.

Brian Walton’s take

Though some had hopes that Scott would make the team out of camp, gaining Triple-A experience is a better move for the young center fielder, our no. 4-ranked Cardinals prospect. Dylan Carlson played well this spring and will be the starter in center until injured Tommy Edman can return. Michael Siani should be the reserve.

Nick Robertson

The other move of special interest is the optioning of Robertson. With Friday’s announcement that both Zack Thompson and Matthew Liberatore have made the team, one less pen spot was available.

Robertson, acquired from Boston in the Tyler O’Neill trade, did not stand out in his first Cardinals camp. The right-hander logged a 4.50 ERA by allowing five runs, four earned, in eight innings. Robertson gave up nine hits and walked five against nine strikeouts. He will initially work out of the Memphis pen and try to position himself to be an early call up with a relief spot opens with St. Louis.

Luken Baker

With the off-season return of Matt Carpenter, any realistic chance for Baker to make the team (sans an injury to another) was quashed. Baker will return to the middle of the Memphis lineup and continue to rake against Triple-A pitching.

The remaining challenge for the big man is to carry that success over to the majors. It didn’t happen this spring, as Baker went 9-for-44 (.205) including a double and a home run. He fanned 13 times and registered a meager .545 OPS.

Rivas and Young were waiver wire additions over the off-season to serve as end-of-the-roster depth at the corner infield and outfield. With the Cardinals having a relatively thin Triple-A bench, the duo should receive decent playing time with Memphis while trying to avoid falling off the back end of the 40-man.

Alfonso Rivas

Over 36 spring at-bats, Rivas batted just .194. Three of his seven hits were doubles and he walked five times against nine strikeouts. His OPS was .634.

Jared Young

Young had a dismal camp at the plate, with just two singles and a double in 37 at-bats. He drew six walks but struck out 11 times. Young’s slash line was .081/.244/.108/.352.

César Prieto

The Cuban native, acquired from Baltimore last July, does not yet hold a 40-man roster spot so is in position to battle with Thomas Saggese to be the first infielder called up when St. Louis has a need.

This spring, Prieto hit well, albeit with no power. Across 35 at-bats, Prieto collected 14 singles and a double and plated an impressive 11 runs. He struck out just four times against one walk. His slash line was .429/.447/.457/.904.

Victor Scott

The entire camp absence of Edman opened the door for the speedster Scott to receive a high level of playing time. Despite no Triple-A experience, Scott performed well. In 38 at-bats, he had 11 singles and a triple. Scott drew five walks against six strikeouts and stole four bases in five attempts. His slash line was .316/.409/.368/.777. Scott also made several exceptional plays in the outfield and continues to have a bright future.

Cardinals Reduce Spring Roster to 41

The St. Louis Cardinals made five roster cuts Thursday morning, reassigning five non-roster players to minor league camp.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today (Thursday, March 21) that the team has reduced its Spring Training roster to 41 players, sending five players to their minor league camp.

The team re-assigned the following non-roster players to their minor league camp:  RHP Kyle Leahy, RHP Wilking Rodríguez, catchers Nick Raposo and Wade Stauss, and outfielder Matt Koperniak.

The team currently has 38 Major League roster players and three non-roster invitees remaining in its Major League camp.

Brian Walton’s take

None of these moves in the fourth round of cuts were surprising, though Leahy and Koperniak stood out this spring. Both pitchers sent down are former 40-man roster right-handers.

Kyle Leahy

Leahy threw six innings over seven games, allowing just one run on three hits, no walks and five strikeouts. Along with his 1.50 ERA, he logged two saves. Leahy will return to the Memphis bullpen.

Wilking Rodríguez

The former Rule 5 pick from the Yankees had a rough spring, charged with eight earned runs in 6 1/3 relief innings (11.37 ERA). Rodriguez fanned six, but walked seven and yielded eight hits, including two long balls. He will also rejoin the Triple-A pen.

Nick Raposo

Catcher Raposo went 2-for-15 on the spring (.133) with two walks and two strikeouts. He will likely be a reserve catcher at Triple-A.

Wade Stauss

In spring games, Stauss went 0-for-2 with a strikeout. He may be a reserve backstop at Double-A.

Matt Koperniak

Koperniak received 26 at-bats in 20 games. The outfielder slashed a respectable .308/.333/.385/.718 slash line. Koperniak plated five but struck out seven times against one walk. He should compete for a starting corner outfield job with Memphis.

What is next

Expect further cuts before the Cardinals leave Florida on Sunday for two games in Arizona. Final reductions to 26 may not occur until next Wednesday.

Cardinals Minors Spring Game Highlights – March 15-16, 2024

Selected St. Louis Cardinals-provided stats from the organization’s first two days of minor league spring training games played on Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16. Our Players of the Day are Jacob Buchberger and Chen-Wei Lin.

On Friday, March 15, the Cardinals held their first games against external competition, meeting their Marlins counterparts with two games held on the back fields of the Roger Dean Complex in Jupiter. On Saturday, the Washington Nationals were the opponents in four contests. The Cardinals went 2-3-1 overall.

Cardinals Media Relations provide selected stats from these games as detailed below. Notes and Players of the Day come from The Cardinal Nation.

Remember that in this phase of camp, the Cardinals label their teams “Working Groups”, an important reminder that these rosters are written in pencil and change regularly. When players are cut from St. Louis, others are moved down accordingly.

Cardinals Farm System Drops from Consensus Top 10 to Bottom Third

Cardinals Make Second Cuts of Spring 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today (Friday, March 8) that the team has reduced its Spring Training roster to 56 players, optioning right-handed pitcher Adam Kloffenstein to the Memphis (AAA) roster and re-assigning non-roster pitcher Cooper Hjerpe to minor league camp.

The team currently has 39 Major League roster players and 17 non-roster invitees remaining in its Major League camp.

Brian Walton’s take

As noted, Memphis starter Kloffenstein is the first 40-man player from the full roster to be optioned out this spring. In four innings over two appearances, the right-hander allowed two runs on four hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

Cooper Hjerpe

In his only spring outing, Hjerpe tossed two hitless, scoreless innings with two walks and four strikeouts. The 22-year-old lefty, who pitched at High-A Peoria last season, was one of the least experienced players in St. Louis’ camp and is the 11th NRI to be sent down so far this spring.

On The Cardinal Nation’s Top Prospect List for 2024, Hjerpe is ranked no. 7 and Kloffenstein is no. 17. Once the season opens, Hjerpe may be in the Springfield rotation, though he could return to the Chiefs for a period as he was limited to eight starts in 2023 due to injury. Kloffenstein will rejoin Memphis, the club he joined after the July 30 Jordan Hicks trade with Toronto.

Cardinals Spring Breakout Roster Announced

A new event for 2024 (and hopefully beyond) is MLB Spring Breakout, a series of games pitting the best prospects from all 30 organizations against their peers.

All teams in the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues will compete in the events during the period of Thursday, March 14 through Sunday, March 17.

The games

The St. Louis Cardinals are one of two teams selected to play two Spring Breakout contests due to the uneven number of organizations that train in Florida and Arizona (15 each).

On Friday, March 15 at 2:05 p.m. ET, Cardinals and Marlins prospects meet at the main Roger Dean Stadium. This game will be televised on MLB Network and ESPN+ and also available on the MLB digital platforms (MLB app, MLB.com, MLB.TV).

On Sunday, March 17 at 10:05 a.m. ET, the Cards prospects face their Astros counterparts, also at The Dean. This contest will only be available via the MLB app, MLB.com and MLB.TV.

The rosters

Each organization’s Spring Breakout rosters were announced during a special program on MLB Network on Thursday morning, March 7.

Eligible players still hold their rookie status coming into the 2024 season (fewer than 130 at-bats, 50 innings pitched or 45 days on an active MLB roster).

That means top Cardinals prospect, shortstop Masyn Winn, is eligible (by one day).

Among the 35 players selected to participate are 29 members of The Cardinal Nation’s Top 50 Prospect List plus two honorable mentions.

In each of the two Spring Breakout games, the Cardinals will have 27 players active – 10 pitchers, four catchers, eight infielders and five outfielders. However, the identities are not the same for both contests.

19 players are active both days, with eight other roster spots (five pitchers, one catcher and two infielders) changing players from March 15 to March 17. Details follow.

Cardinals Send Out 10 in First Cuts of Spring 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals have reduced their Spring Training roster to 58 players. Five of 10 players re-assigned to minor league camp are ranked prospects, including three in the Top 10.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced the team has reduced its Spring Training roster to 58 players today (Tuesday, March 5), with 10 players being re-assigned to minor league camp.

The team re-assigned non-roster pitchers Andre Granillo, Tink Hence, Packy Naughton, Max Rajcic, Victor Santos and Logan Sawyer, catchers Leonardo Bernal, Sammy Hernandez and Carlos Linárez, and outfielder Moisés Gómez to minor league camp.

Brian Walton’s take

There are no big surprises here in the first round of cuts, entirely made up of non-roster invitees. The group includes six pitchers (one of whom is rehabbing – Naughton), three A-ball catchers and a former 40-man roster outfielder (Gómez).

However, their relatively short stay in big league camp doesn’t mean they aren’t promising players. In fact, three are ranked in the Top 10 in The Cardinal Nation’s Prospect List for 2024. Hence is no. 2, Bernal is no. 9 and Rajcic is 10th. Also, Gómez is 22nd and Granillo is 26th.

Tink Hence

In limited spring action, Hence tossed four scoreless innings and Rajcic was charged with one run in three frames, including a 1-2-3 ninth inning Tuesday. Granillo yielded one run in one inning.

Gómez singled and struck out in five at-bats and Bernal drew a free pass in his only spring plate appearance.

With St. Louis having no game on Wednesday, the timing of these moves was planned to give the 10 players the customary extra day to change camps. Accordingly, minor league camp is growing from 115 to 125 players in the process.

Dave Vonderhaar Receives 2023 Cardinals George Kissell Award

Upon the opening of minor league camp each spring, the St. Louis Cardinals make special announcements and award presentations at the organization’s spring training orientation meeting in Jupiter, Florida.

A very important recognition disclosed late Monday is the George Kissell Award for excellence in player development across the Cardinals organization.

The selection for the 2023 season is a game changer in that the choice is as unknown as 2022 winner Jose Oquendo is famous. Minor League Equipment Manager Dave Vonderhaar was voted in by his Cardinals player development peers.

About the winner

Vonderhaar is the first non-uniformed, non-staff selection since athletic trainer Mark O’Neal in 1997. In his role, Vonderhaar regularly interacts with every single individual in Player Development.

As the Minor League Equipment Manager located in Jupiter, FL, Vonderhaar orders and distributes all minor league gear, equipment, and apparel to minor league players, coaches, and staff.

Vonderhaar has been in his current role for over 11 years, since the start of 2013. He spent the prior three years as Equipment Manager for the Class-A Palm Beach Cardinals.

Before joining the Cardinals organization in 2010, the Xavier University graduate in Sport Management served in related roles for eight years. He began with the Durham Bulls (TB, Triple-A), moved to the Marlins minor leagues, University of Miami, Lehigh Iron Pigs (Phillies Double-A) and the NCAA.

The George Kissell Award

The Kissell Award is the top recognition any member of the player development organization could receive and remains an annual reminder of the importance of George Kissell to generations of Cardinals.

Through his teaching, Kissell essentially wrote the book that was later labeled “The Cardinal Way” as a player, manager and teaching leader of the organization from 1940 until he passed away in the fall of 2008 due to injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

The Cardinals recognized Kissell’s importance long before his untimely passing, first establishing the Award in 1995 to recognize a member of the organizational staff for excellence in player development. In the most appropriate nod, Kissell himself received the first Award.

The winner is chosen through voting by the Cardinals minor league field staff, with the peer recognition making it especially meaningful.

More about George

Among Kissell’s many other honors is a plaque outside the Cardinals Jupiter clubhouse highlighting his numerous accomplishments as well as the naming of the team’s minor league quad in his honor.

The inscription on the plaque says it all.

“Every player in the Cardinal organization since 1940 has had contact with George Kissell and they all have been better for it. One of the most respected people in the game of baseball at any level, George has worked in all areas of the Cardinals’ baseball operations. He was a scout, minor league manager, major league coach, and, as senior field coordinator for player development, he has coordinated the team’s minor league affiliates.

“Well known for his emphasis on fundamentals, George taught several generations of Redbirds how to play baseball. In recognition of his teaching excellence and personal example, the George Kissell Award is presented annually to the Cardinals outstanding player development staff person.

“George Kissell is one of the true foundations of the Cardinals tradition.”

Though Kissell was not eligible in the fan voting for Modern Era players to the Cardinals Hall of Fame, he was chosen as an “owner’s selection” and entered the Hall in 2015.

In ongoing honor of his teaching impact of generations of players, the Cardinals dedicated their four primary minor league fields in Jupiter as the George Kissell Quad.

Two-time Kissell Award honorees include Steve Turco, Chris Maloney and Mark DeJohn, none of whom remain in the organization.

Turco is now retired but was a long-time manager and scout. Maloney was formerly St. Louis’ third-base coach and DeJohn retired four years ago as the organization’s minor league field coordinator.

Seven members of the current Cardinals staff are prior winners, down by one from last year due to the retirement of 2012 honoree Bryan Eversgerd.

The seven remaining prior Kissell Award winners are Oquendo, Senior Minor League Pitching Coordinator Tim Leveque, Director of Performance Dr. Robert Butler, St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol, Cardinals first base coach Stubby Clapp, Cards third base coach Ron “Pop” Warner and Assistant General Manager and Director of Player Development Gary LaRocque.

Cardinals Reach Contract Agreements with All 0-3 Year Players

All members of the St. Louis Cardinals 40-man roster are now officially under contract for the 2024 season.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today (Saturday, March 2) that they have signed all of their 0-3 service time players to contracts for the 2024 season.

Today’s announced signings include the following 22 players: 1B Luken Baker, OF Alec Burleson, INF/OF Brendan Donovan, INF José Fermín, RHP Ryan Fernandez, INF Nolan Gorman, C Iván Herrera, RHP Adam Kloffenstein, LHP Matthew Liberatore, OF Lars Nootbaar, RHP Riley O’Brien, C Pedro Pagés, RHP Andre Pallante, 1B/OF Alfonso Rivas III, RHP Sem Robberse, RHP Nick Robertson, LHP Drew Rom, OF Michael Siani, LHP Zack Thompson, OF Jordan Walker, SS Masyn Winn and 1B/OF Jared Young.

The Cardinals now have all players signed for 2024.

Brian Walton’s take

This is the annual spring rubber-stamp one-year contract announcement for the 40-man roster players not yet eligible for arbitration.

These players essentially have no choice but to take the salary as offered – if they want to play in 2024. The 22 named above, representing just over half of the 40-man roster, accepted what the Cards were willing to pay them, as expected.

However, there is a small positive, or perhaps more accurately, no obvious negatives. There were no renewals.

If any of the 22 did not agree to accept the amount the Cardinals offered (within the terms of the CBA negotiated between players and owners), the team could renew their contract, anyway. Because these players are not yet arbitration-eligible, they have no choice but to take their salary if they want to play, but renewals would send the clear signal they were not happy about it.

For example, in 2019, both Jack Flaherty and Jordan Hicks were renewed. In July 2023, just before they reached free agency, they were both traded away. In the case of Flaherty, there were no reports of long-term contract talks. The Cardinals and Hicks reportedly discussed the possibility, but nothing became of it.

As noted, all minimum salary amounts are defined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between players and owners. The minimum major league salary this season is $740,000, up from $720,000 in 2023.

All arbitration eligible players and six-year-plus players previously came to terms with the team.
