That Ponce de Leon will not start again is not surprising. The timing of this announcement is curious though. Is Mo really planning this or is it him telling prospective trade partners that he is not that desperate to acquire a starter?

I can’t imagine that other teams can’t figure out that the Cards are in a position that they almost have to upgrade the rotation. It’s amazing how quickly the depth they appeared to have at the beginning of the year evaporated.
I agree, stlcard25, but then why make the Wacha announcement now, other than to calm speculation?
As has been said many, many times over the years, you can never have too much pitching.

Gets taken deep for a granny and then gets promoted. Next thing you know he’ll be looking for a long extension. This promotion may have nothing to do with Wednesday night’s trading deadline, but rather the Cardinals trying positive reinforcement tactics with Wacha. I know for me, that has always got my performance revved up vs a kick in the keester.
Wacha was pretty good in Saturday night’s game after Ponce de Leon got taken out (4.2 IP, 5 hits, 1 ER, 5 SO), and that was against the Astros. If he can pitch that well with any kind of consistency, we honestly don’t need another starting pitcher.

well giving him another shot is another way of saying they aren’t going to try to get anyone in free agency. of course with stroman off the market, there aren’t that many great choices left. hopefully wacha can turn it around.
Wacha returning to the rotation makes sense for now. This could change if the Front Office is able to acquire a starter. I also wonder how Gomber and/or Reyes are being factored into roster plans for the stretch run.
Initially, I was concerned that demand for pitching would be far greater than supply At the trade deadline. That would drive asking prices up which would price the Cardinals out of the market (based on recent history). However, I was shocked that Toronto did not get more for Stroman. I wonder if the Cards were in the running?
It is almost August and neither Gomber nor Reyes are pitching in games. It seems unlikely either is going to be a factor down the stretch.

If the Cardinals don’t acquire a starter at the Deadline, don’t count on Reyes to fill that spot. St. Louis’ prized right-hander has faced setback after setback this year, and he’s currently on the injured list in Memphis with a right pectoral strain. Mozeliak said Reyes is scheduled to throw off the mound early next week. If all goes well, there’s a chance Reyes could make it back to St. Louis this year, but it would be in the bullpen, given the clock.
The same goes for Austin Gomber (biceps/shoulder), who is scheduled to start his throwing program next week. There is a chance he could be ready by September for the Cardinals, but his rehab is going to take some time.
I wish Woodford had not been blow up in his last start, otherwise he could have been an option. I really don’t want Wacha back in rotation. Been there, done that.
