Elehuris Montero wins it for Springfield in the bottom of the 11th with a bases loaded walk-off double to score 2 runs. Springfield wins 4-3 and now have a winning streak lol. 3-7 record on the year.
Austin Warner also with a nice bounce back game. Struggled with his command but he battled, throwing 99 pitches through 5 innings. Gave up only 1 hit but issued 4 walks to 4 strike outs.
Peoria pitching was bombed in the opener of their double-header as they lost 9-3.
Springfield managed just four hits in 11 innings, but made them work.
Peoria dropped game 1 of their double header with a 0-9 score. Kane County blasted Cole Aker for 4 home runs and scored all 9 runs off him in just 3.1 innings.
I was confused because SPFD gave up 2 unearned runs with no errors and then I realized both were scored by the designated guys on 2nd in extra innings.
Sebastian Tabata gets called on in the 9th to save the game for Peoria with the tying run at 3B and 2 outs. He gets the save with throwing just 1 pitch.
I am not a fan of the extra innings rule, but it seems like Manfred is pushing it toward MLB (see spring training).
I guess since someone literally hijacked tonight’s game thread, I’ll log off and just watch the game.

…and that was indeed the final score, 1-0. Thanks, stormin’ Gorman! On a related note, here’s a fun early season micro-sample comparison.
Ivan Herrera and Nolan Gorman are Peoria Chiefs teammates.
Nolan Gorman is very young. Ivan Herrera is younger
Nolan is homering for 27% of his base hits. Ivan is homering for 33% of his hits.
Gorman is walking once every 13 AB’s, Herrera every 5 AB’s.
Gorman has struck out in 26% of his plate appearances. Herrera has whiffed in 32% of his.Conclusion: Ivan Herrera is more Gormanesque than Gorman himself.
This was not intended as serious analysis, of course. But Ivan — the only minor league backstop in any organization to post a 150 or better wRC+ in both 2017 and 2018 — is to my mind one of the overlooked potential gems of the Redbird system.
How overlooked? Fangraphs had Herrera 33rd in a Cardinal farm that they graded bottom five in baseball even when Reyes & Hudson still had eligibility. I rated the Panamanian 18-year-old roughly 140th among all prospects before the season began, and I feel at least 10% vindicated already due to the early evidence of a Herrera power increase. So far in his brief career he’s hit well enough for any position on the field. And if Ivan Herrera can remain at catcher, the Cards might really have something.

IHerrera has opened enough eyes to push passed both Ortega and JuRodriguez. Those two took turns being ahead of each other in rankings…. Herrera sneaked right by them. Ortega is hurt and in years past they shared catching duties as year by year they were placed on the same teams. Maybe the thought was to create a competition between the two.
Herrera is in his 3rd pro season but like Gorman is well above his age 18 in abilities. If his strong play continues I could see him closing in on the top-10 as early as the next TCN ranking. It will be exciting to watch him progress.
There’s room above for all three of these catchers with O’Keefe and Godoy sharing time at Springfield and both are marginal catchers but they do add experience in the dugout and valuable cogs for the organization. IMO both are backup players. And both could be excellent mentors for the younger guys. So there’s room at AA for the right prospect.
Herrera needs to spend some quality time with Yadi, so he can see firsthand what it takes to be a superior ML catcher. I bet Yadi would also enjoy the experience of taking his eventual replacement under his wings. Just keep the kid away from Fowler!
To clarify, Herrera has been ahead of the others for months here, though I cannot speak for other lists. In our off-season rankings, Herrera was substantially better ranked by all three voters (me, Derek and community) compared to Rodriguez/Ortega.
Rodriguez/Ortega have been paired because their experience levels are comparable and there is not a lot of flexibility with catching assignments (as evidenced by Francisco Pena currently in EST).
Pugs, I know you are joking, but one of the things I wrote about over the winter was wondering if Herrera as a teen coming out of the GCL, might get a big-league camp invite. It didn’t happen, but I felt it could.
It also should be noted that Montero seems to coming around to AA pitching. He hit his first AA homer, and drove in 4 runs in the last few games.
After reading all of the glowing comments about Herrera it got me to thinking about a potential scenario. I am going to assume that Yadi will change his mind about retiring after 2020 and I’m sure Mo will oblige him with a two year extension because it would be the path of least resistance thing to do. That would mean Knizer becomes trade bait just like Kelly was. Herrera would be ready by 2023 once Yadi finally hangs it up.
