I had a lot of questions regarding some of the MiLB assignments and none was bigger than making Mike Hauschild, Williams Perez, and Harold Arauz starting pitchers. The only rationale behind these decisions was trying to limit the innings of others. I still don’t know why Lane Thomas isn’t being in CF over Robinson. And the piggyback philosophy is stupid imo. I understand the concept but why would you pull Helsley from a game he is cruising in, 52 pitches through 4 innings? Seems like Cabrera should have had Hauschild’s spot the entire time.
This doesn’t even begin to cover all of the questions I have for some of the in game decisions.
Ouch, Hauschild and Layne will have to carry those huge ERAs until they can successfully put up some 0-frames. Top of the order for the Cards in bottom-3. I bet the R-Birds make it a game.
I am less convinced it is about limiting injury than it is covering for a quality dip in the pipeline. I have an entire article going into this subject in depth scheduled to run for subscribers on Tuesday morning.
You seem to be upset a lot, BHC. My (clearly unsolicited) advice is to pace yourself. Don’t risk burnout early. It is a long season! 😉
Its frustration, Brian because I have no clue as to the rationale behind a lot of crappy decisions. If Hauschild, Arauz, and Perez are supposed to be guys that fill the dip in the pitching depth then the Cardinals pitching depth is in worse shape than I thought.
Though you don’t seem to think so, the guys running the system know what they are doing. We don’t have access to all the information they do. It doesn’t mean every move works out, of course.
Yes, I think the pitching depth is in worse shape than you (and many others) think. I have been writing about this for the last year. It is glossed over because the Memphis pitching and the young guns at St. Louis have been so good.
Brian: you seemed to indicate that Mendoza would have to fight for playing time at Springfield. I think between playing 1B, 3B and DH he’ll be in there every day. I’m remembering what John Vuch said to Ben Senturia, a backfield friend. Ben listed Gorman, Montero, Nunez as top prospects for 3B. John said “Don’t forget Evan Mendoza.
Mendoza had to fight for playing time at Memphis. It should be easier in his second year at Springfield, however at third base, Montero is the better prospect. Now they are on the same roster. It should be interesting to watch.
Rondon has been listed as today’s starter for Palm Beach and the rotation turning over to Oviedo tomorrow.
I never said that I think the St. Louis FO doesn’t know what they’re doing. And I was well aware of the gap in the Cardinals pitching. My point was that its worse than I realized.
I expect Mendoza to see action at 1B, 2B, and 3B whenever Montero needs an off day.
John Nogowski is pitching for Memphis. 21 pitches to get 3 outs. He loaded the bases but didn’t allow a run to score. He had a better game than Hauschild.
I all fairness Brian did write about the starting pitching depth in the minors being a concern last year and with all the promotions you could see it becoming an issue.
As far as the pitching fall off goes, I am guessing the hope is that they draft a couple promising pitchers in 2019, and several ex-DSL pitchers advance. ALso, has there been any news on when Walsh’s and Gingery’s rehab?
Brian: Think you missed my point. Mendoza is going to play. Of course Montero is going to play but so is Mendoza probably quite a bit of 1B. Only other guy there is Chinea—-not a priority prospect.
Good time for both Montero and Mendoza to get some work at first base as the former seems more likely to end up there long-term.
That’s a good point Derek. Only thing is Goldschmidt stands in the way but you never know what future holds.
I wonder if anyone here can tell me if Gorman is hitting good breaking balls in his torrid start so far, or is he doing his damage on fastballs primarily? From the little I saw of him in spring training, he could neither lay off a slider nor hit one. I realize he is off to a hot start, but I wouldn’t promote him until he has shown some ability to lay off breaking balls out of the strike zone and hit ones that are in it.
