    We’ve known for a long time MLB has a problem with renegade umpires. From Cowboy Joe West, to Angel Hernandez, to CB Bucknor. Too many times we’ve seen umpires stare down players and antagonize them to the point they get ejected. Check out this clip from last night’s Astros game where Ron Kulper thinks people are there to watch him.

    Umpires sometimes aren’t very good, but I NEVER want them replaced. The only ones I can’t stand are the Angel Hernandez’ of umping. Arrogant SOB if you ask me. He shouldn’t be part of the show.

    It looks like their union is thin-skinned.

    Wow. That’s pathetic. No wonder there are so many terrible umps nowadays.

    They can’t get laser balls and strikes into MLB soon enough. That one little thing will improve the game in so many ways, and get rid of garbage like that from garbage umpires. It will also get rid of a ton of the pathetic whining from players.

    Yeah and the umps know they are untouchable so they can do whatever they want, it is a JOKE how pathetic some are and the FACT they get away with being bullies!

    At least they are in better shape now. Back in the 1980’s it seemed like a majority of the umps weighed over 300 lbs.

    Saw an article this am on Ron Kulpa and his childish behavior during the Rangers/Astros game. He is in need of some kind of counseling or dismissal – has many examples of poor behavior. Article may have been on MLB.

    HPUs could easily be replaced by electronic calls of balls/strikes. But they would still be needed to make foul/safe or out calls so no money saved but a lot more accurate game would be called. Also, since the SCOTUS legalized sports betting in baseball and umpire on the take would not be unheard of. One call can change an entire game. We saw more than one in the last Pitt game.

    accuracy and integrity can both be addressed with an electronic system, ive heard others talk about it and i agree

    -an earpiece in the home plate umpire’s ear hooked to the K zone or whatever is accurate. If it is a strike they here 1 beep, if not, nothing. Or 1 beep for ball and 2 for strike i dont care. Simple. Only the umpire hears it and he makes his strike and ball calls based on it
    -everything else stays the same

    -umpires are already judged on their accuracy this way so if it is good enough to determine who can BE umpires and STAY umpires then it should be good enough to determine the pitches
    -players are evaluating themselves and coaches too on the tech that exists, identifying the strike zone is a tech thing now, it doesnt make sense to keep it a judgement call anymore

    -if the tech goes down then you go back to the old ways and make a reference to it in the log of the game, a manager could still protest the game over an improper decision if they so choose
    -umpires are not made to look bad, they are simply calling the balls and strikes fed to them,
    -they still have the authority
    -they can focus on the growing amount of true judgement calls that are a part of their job (determining clear path, obstruction, foul tips, even they could spend more time on looking at batters leaning over the plate on HBP’s not to mention the MLB desire to speed up the game

    -i am as big a proponent of keeping the game “pure” but this is something that could be integrated to fix a fundamental problem that before IF technology had existed to make it right from the beginning they would have done so IMO
    -it is no different than reviewing plays at any plate for safe or out, or catches orr no catches

    -we have the technology to get the calls right, knowingly and actively not doing so is much more problematic to the integrity to the game. Much more so than keeping the “human nature” a part of he game

    Nowhere in the rule manual do i see that the human nature should take precedence over other rules of the game. In fact protesting a game was there BECAUSE they recognized that the human element was fundamentally flawed and had to have means of correction.

    In the past the umpires were the best technology we had. now they aren’t. Change it and let them focus
    and be judge and evaluated on the parts of the game where they truly still are the best technology available. Where human judgement truly is needed.

    Totally agree thejager. Every game I can think of (at least the major spectator sports) has had changes incorporated into it to make it more exciting or more accurate and to eliminate nasty fights based solely on an opinion or judgement call. The NFL is a good example at the moment with their attempts to make pass inteference calls subject to review for either being called or not being called. I sure don’t support a review of ball/strike calls but the ability now exists to make them accurate nearly 100 percent of the time.

    Can anybody direct me to the explanation of the codes that appear above the reply box. B-I-Link-B-Quote,etc?

    Minuteman, the tweet with the video link is the game where Ron Kulpa acted immature and claimed “I can do whatever I want” after antagonizing the Astros bench.

    Minuteman,

    B = Bold
    I = Italics
    Link = to post a link to another site or article
    B-Quote = quoting another poster’s post

    The other ones I am not sure of.

    The other tag that some use is IMG, which allows you to easily post an IMaGe.

    UL is underline
    OL is ordered list
    LI is for items in a list
    CLOSE TAGS automatically closes (or ends) any of these tags, which are common HTML code

    If you see any weird posts from me you will know that an old codger is trying to use some of those codes in a post. Thanks Brian.

    Minuteman, the good news is that you get 10 minutes after posting to correct any wayward keystrokes. I often wonder how often Pugs uses this to cover his tracks. He can be quite unruly late at night sometimes. 😉
