ParticipantWhom do you have penciled in as the 6th infielder? Sosa?
Edman(not on 40 man)? Urias? And what do you do with your badly needed LH OF bat (who very well may be Robinson) if both Martinez and O’Neill are on the 25 man?

ParticipantAs it stands now, you would have to pencil in Munoz #6 INF and JoMartinez #4 OF, with Goldschmidt being the sole newcomer. But that’s why you use pencils with erasers. There’s still a month and a half of the off-season left plus the all important spring training competition, plus the menacing DL to contend with.
The rotation looks very much like what we ended ’18 with. There will be plenty of trimming to do to the list of bullpen candidates. CMartinez, starter or relief? Reyes in the MEM rotation or the DL?
If it were possible to see the opening day MEM roster now, the rest of the full season team’s rosters would become more evident. There will be a lot of arms for x amount of bullpen spots at STL and MEM. And that goes for the starters also, though on a smaller scale.
The FO seems to be depending on vast improvement from the guys that faltered last season to upgrade the ’19 version of this team. There is some added depth everywhere except the catching position where the club seems to be quite vulnerable.

ParticipantIf the outfield remains Ozuna/Bader/Fowler/Martinez/O’Neill, where do you fit Robinson in?
With an infield of Goldschmidt,
Wong, DeJong, Carpenter, Gyorko, and Munoz, are we all set?January 2, 2019 at 10:49 am #79083PadsFS
ParticipantMunoz may not make the team over Robinson.
January 2, 2019 at 12:42 pm #79087bccran
ParticipantCan you go to battle with Gyorko as your only backup at 3B/SS/2B?
January 2, 2019 at 2:19 pm #79091I saw enough of Munoz last season to realize that you cannot pencil him in to this year’s 25 man…….you can ink him in. His stick was a very pleasant surprise and his mediocre defense can be in large part attributed to him being shuffled around the diamond with such great frequency. He played all 3 outfield positions, SS, 2B & 3B. Yeah, I think he’s pretty much a mortal lock.
January 2, 2019 at 3:54 pm #79103Pugs, how can you be sure that moving around was why he had defensive problems? A lot of his errors appeared to me to be lack of concentration (which he may or may not improve upon). If it is from being moved around wont he have the same problem in 2019?

ParticipantRamon Urias could very well be another Munoz.

jj-cf-stlParticipantIm going to disagree with the idea of a LH outfield bat, at least for now. Even with a Bozo Martinez trade, we would have the three starters and O’Neill. There are another four outfielders already on the 40man as depth (Thomas, Robinson, Garcia and Williams).
Now I’m not a prospect guru like some of you are, but my concern is the weakness at the middle infield.
Munoz i like better at the four corners.
Gyorko wouldn’t get 13mil from me in 2020, so he’s a FA-to-be in my eyes, and he’s not a backup SS.
Wong draws over 10mil in 2020, guaranteed. If his bat disappears in 19′ that’s a hard sell. There’s also an over 12mil club option in 2021, that I don’t think he’ll ever be worth. He’s often injured. 400 PA’s is a good year for him but not at his 2020 & 21′ salaries.
So I’d like to acquire a true middle infielder this winter. If he bats lefty, even better. Pair him with Jedd, or Munoz if Jedd gets dealt.
January 2, 2019 at 4:45 pm #79108Playing 6 different positions as a rookie has to be an extremely difficult task, Carioca. I think it will be an almost certainty that Munoz will have fewer “lack of concentration” episodes as a sophomore.

IMO, it is probably unfair to have any scenario other than only Gyorko as the backup infielder. He’s averaged about 450 PAs in his three years as a Cardinal so something would have to give.
Jose Martinez has averaged 450 PAs as well in his two (ML) years here and it’s pretty unfair to his bat that he would have to sit anymore than that also.
We will likely have 8 relievers again in 2019 and thus only 4 bench spots.
With the 4th spot on the bench, I think Drew Robinson (plays infield and outfield) has the best shot (over Munoz AND O’Neill) to make the team simply due to every other player being righthanded besides Carpenter and Wong (Fowler is a SW, but weak batting LH).
Unfortunately, it looks like we will have O’Neill and Munoz in AAA until an injury hit.
January 3, 2019 at 12:51 pm #79168Or the new LHH they don’t have yet makes the team and Robinson joins O’Neill and Munoz in Memphis…
January 3, 2019 at 1:28 pm #79174Munoz is not going to spend one minute in a minor league ballpark for the entire 2019 regular season….other than on a possible rehab assignment. He’s here to stay and anybody here who doesn’t see that is…….would totally shock me.
January 3, 2019 at 2:13 pm #79177I will be a non believer in Munoz’s defense (especially at SS) unti he makes me a believer. That is a lack of faith that he earned. Even when he was playing almost exclusively short while DeJong was out he did not improve. Maybe an off season of work will result in improvement but until I see it I am in Missouri “show me” mode.
January 3, 2019 at 6:32 pm #79210I’ve seen a heck of a lot worse. Munoz is a diamond in the rough. I thought he had a beautiful rookie campaign. Played 6 different positions and hit very well. His defense will come along just fine. Tell you what, Carioca. How about a friendly little wager. I say that Munoz will be with the Cards for the entire ’19 regular season. If he doesn’t, I’ll send you a $250 gift card to Red ( in honor of Red Schoendienst) Lobster. I win and you send me a $10 gift card to McDonald’s. Any kind of significant (out longer than a month) injury and nobody wins. Deal……or no deal?
January 3, 2019 at 6:39 pm #7921125 to one odds – I’m in!
January 3, 2019 at 8:14 pm #79214Game on……(easiest 10 clams I’ve ever won).
January 3, 2019 at 8:15 pm #79215UncleDenny
ParticipantI saw Munoz make some of the most spectacular plays all spring training while playing third and short. For some odd reason they never used him at second. He’ll be fine. Terrific arm and good hands.
January 3, 2019 at 9:29 pm #79216Pugs, they serve clams at McDonalds? I know they do at Red Lobster!

ParticipantRING RING
PUGS: hey Yairo its me Pugs.
MUNOZ: hola que tal.
PUGS: I made that bet that we talked about.
MUNOZ: Who did you say you were? I don’t remember any bet.
PUGS: you know, the one where if you stay with the Cards all season we’ll win $10 bucks for McDonald’s. If we lose we have to give Carioca $250 for Red Lobster.
MUNOZ: Carioca? who? what bet? Man, I don’t know. That’s putting a lot of pressure on me. Did you clear this with my agent?
PUGS: don’t worry about it. You, me and Moz will eat like kings. I already told him that we’d cut him in.January 20, 2019 at 8:36 am #80336
jj-cf-stlParticipantC Pena RHB
IF Gyorko RHB
OF Bozo Martinez RHBand the mystery LHB batter is…..
any new ideas Cardinals Nation?
January 20, 2019 at 9:03 am #80337It is Drew Robinson unless something changes.
Why not give the “Bozo” thing a rest, please?
January 20, 2019 at 9:28 am #80339Because it is easy to just make fun of somebody who was one of if not our best hitters last year…it is just stupid to call any of our players names, but he isn’t the only one here that does it, Rat is by far worst at it…it is childish at best.
January 20, 2019 at 10:16 am #80341
jj-cf-stlParticipantIt’s a nickname rewarding his joy displayed on the field, which he’s earned.
MLB says “let the kids play”. We’re now supposed to endorse, or at least endure, clown antics and “personality” on the playing field.
Since Jose Martinez seems to me the biggest clown in MLB, why not give him the most well known clowns name out of respect?
Try considering his nickname as a compliment, and you’re more aligned with the new MLB.
January 20, 2019 at 12:07 pm #80342I’d like to give the name ‘Bozo’ a rest, too. I get the frustration with a player who fails or does not meet expectations. But I don’t understand how anyone can take pleasure in continually insulting another person. Bozo is a clever name to come up with, but after a while it gets to be a drag. I don’t like DeWallet, either. Its disrespectful to a guy who has revived the franchise and brought immeasurable joy to so many fans. Then, add to that the free stadium that he gave the Lou. This guy is already in mudville’s HOF, and he belongs in at least two more HOF’s, IMO.
