After Thursday’s day off in St. Louis…
7:15 p.m. RHP John Gant (7-6, 3.53) vs. LHP Madison Bumgarner (6-6, 3.14) FOX Sports Midwest/KMOXThree lefties in this series. Should be good for guys like Bader, Jmart and Ozuna but not so great for Carp and Wong. The Giants are scuffling so it’d be nice if they were defeated handily in these games.
Think about this. Every player that starts for the Cardinals will have an above-average batting line once Wong gets above 100 (he’s at 97 right now)

Bader ~ 108, DeJong ~ 102, Molina ~ 108, O’Neill ~ 110, Ozuna ~ 106, Munoz ~ 105, Gyorko ~ 115
I hope Garcia and Adams don’t get another start.
I don’t think Gyorko or Martinez should come out of the lineup the rest of the year.
I agree on Garcia and Adams not getting a start again. I would have no problem with O’Neill instead of Martinez a couple of times or late in games. No Munoz either.
Wong isn’t that bad against lefthanders (234). If you look at his splits, he should be at leadoff or #2. He is a really good hitter if he hits early in the count. He is horrible if he hits 1-2, 3-0, or 3-1. Hits well with men on base.
Don’t go deep in the count.
I feel the same about DeJong. He takes a ton of batting practice fastball in the zone on the first pitch. It is usually the best pitch he sees in the appearance.
I read somewhere that Matt Carpenter has more called strikes on pitches out of the zone than anyone in baseball. Usually guys who draw a lot of walks get the opposite kind of break. You almost have to groove one for Joey Votto to get a called strike. But Matt also seems to complain a lot on called strikes and several that are clearly in the zone. Maybe a little retaliation here.

If we get it handed to us again at home by another lame team, then our Birds do not deserve a playoff spot. Trying to think off the top of my head which home series’ we’ve lost to the lower echelon clubs…..Marlins…Royals….let us not forget the Reds….there’s others, but let’s think positive here. I’ll call this one 5-3 Birds with Jose administering a healthy dose of damage to Bumgarner & Co.
A bit unorthodox to bunt with Martinez, but he nearly ended up getting on. Longoria with two straight good plays (bunt, liner) to stifle the Cards bats.
Gyorko strokes a double that nearly gets the gap. Two on, two out. Yadi up. He grounds out to strand the pair.
I vividly recall the time in Yadi’s career where 18 homers in a season for the Cards receiver seemed like a total impossibility. The Birds settle for the one 1st inning tally.
I wonder if this Nick Hundley, who just doubled, is related in any fashion to ex-cubs catcher Randy Hundley….and Randy’s kid, who had a couple of big time HR campaigns as a member of the Dodgers….forget his first name….Todd maybe?
I remember Todd Hundley. He was pretty good at times.

It was “Todd”….thanks, stlcard25. Just googled Nick Hundley and he is 35 years old…and not related to Randy & Todd in the least.
As with many of these top flight pitchers, their only real inning of vulnerability is that 1st inning. Many times if you don’t tag them with a couple of runs or so right off the bat, your window of opportunity closes. We did hit Bumgarner with the one run, but with a little luck we could have scored a couple more. Runs will be at a premium from here on in.

Ross has done a quality job since coming over. Maybe he can poke us another dinger tonight too like he did vs LA.
