This is insurance against facing the Dodgers in the playoffs.
It also creates another jam on the 40 man. But I’m happier with Adams and Martinez as pinch hitters than Garcia and Wisdom.

What are we going to do with Adams? Does he play 1stbase and Carp move to 3rd against certain righties? Or is he strictly a pinch-hitter only?
Will he be satisfied with his playing time in St. Louis? Wasn’t that the issue with him that eventually caused us to trade him? And how long is he under contract?

As Brian points out, Adams is a pending free agent thus will only be here for the next six weeks. Also, someone else from the active roster will have to sent out tomorrow when Adams is activated.
as a power lefty bat off the bench for September push i like it
for taking time from Carp or Gyorko…not so much
but combined with GGarcia on the bench we will now have two lefty pinch hitters with experience…add in Munoz returning soon and Wisdom coming back probably mean we will be able to have enough depth on the infield so as to not use Adams or GGarcia in the field and expressly for pinch hitting or late extra inning switches…meaning we can use them early for a pitcher spot if we want to go short outings with our pitching depth without losing our only lefty bench hitter early
Sad to see Wisdom go down, but i think he gets it…and Wisdom will be back in September IMO
Wisdom i think proved he belongs and will probably play more in the field in September than Adams will
Hope like hell it`s a pitcher going back to Memphis…..14 freakin g damn pitchers would be beyond dumb.13 is already stupid IMHO.The bench is neglected to keep a pitcher or two who might pitch a inning or two a week.Enough .
Matt’s uncle used to post here often and was a super guy. Hopefully this move results in not only his return, but also just one extra “W” in the win column…..which could be the difference. Wisdom should be very proud as he did a terrific job in his short stint up here.
Adams (at the right price) has always been part of my fantasy GM plan B for 2019. Plan A of course is Harper or Machado. One of my plan B’s is an Adams/Martinez platoon at first with Carpenter at 3rd. I dont know if this makes it more likely to happen though.
You do not want to go back to Carpenter at third, CC. This club is so much better with Gyorko in the lineup. The infield defense is tight, and Jedd is a solid bat. I have never understood the constant call for a third baseman, as all a manager has to do is play Gyorko. Finally we have a manager that understands that.
Adams is simply a strong lefty bat off the bench. As was pointed out in an earlier thread, a pitcher needs to be de-activated, and then you have Garcia and Adams available off the bench. And Matt is good insurance should Carp go down for a spell. But it is only a two-week issue for the roster, as once we get to September the club can carry 20 pitchers if they so desire.
On the TV broadcast last night they were talking about Adams playing some outfield, but that would only be in an emergency I would think. He should never play here over the guys we have, and not even over Martinez.
I am not a Gyrko fan. And certainly not at 13 million a year. Carpenter has been a plus defender at 3rd this year.
We disagree on that, CC. Carpenter does not have the arm to play third, and over the course of a season his weak arm would be a liability at third. If teams were so inclined these days, they could bunt all day long on him and have success. But no one plays the game that way anymore, so that would not be an issue with Carp.
However, an everyday Gyorko is a 25 homer/.800 OPS guy with solid defense.
Carpenter has been just fine at 3rd this year, and generally acceptable over his career. People just don’t like his throws, which is a factor on a few plays a year probably. Having Adams at 1B and Carpenter at 3B, at least against some righties is likely about a wash defensively and for sure an offensive upgrade.
I don’t dislike Gyorko, but he’s streaky, his power has declined and his salary is increasing. The best scenario for me is that he’s good the rest of the year and then we can trade him in the offseason.
As the team is winning right now, Adams is a known commodity and not likely to trigger any chemistry change. Adding Murphy, at this point, might be a detriment to what the Cards have going for them.
I dont think a lot of people dislike Gyorko i think what it comes from is the fact that people are wanting another upgrade to the offense and 3b/SS/1b is really the only potential place to get that in FA or trades.
I prefer Carp at 1b over 3b, but if we can find the big bat for 1b then fine i get it…
Wong should be at 2b unless you can upgrade the offense to make up for the defensive lapse…and there arent too many options for that so Wong stays…maybe a guy like LeMahieu might be an option…better offense and not too much of a dip in defense
Ozuna isnt going anywhere, Bader either at this point, and RF seems full with JMart, Oneill and Fowler taking up the spot
Yadi isnt going anywhere so we arent upgrading that..
DeJong will play SS or 3b and it isnt changing
Carp will play 1b or 3b so that is another spot gone
that leaves 1 spot in the field where one could look to upgrade..and 3b is the most logical as it doesnt displace Carp or DeJong from their best positions at the moment..
looking to upgrade 3b isnt an attack on Gyorko or his value but more a look at the players we have and seeing that only one spot coudl be upgraded if we are looking for an impact bat to help the offense going forward…(without shifting a lot of people or doing a bunch of other moves)
it is the path of least resistance…and as Gyorko has shown he can be a super utility type too he is the logical choice…and with all due respect to his better defense at 3b and his pretty good offense…they both could be better and more consistent especially the bat…he disappears for long stretches and it has been happening for his whole career….he has good value, but perhaps more as a bench utility

Gyorko has a $13.0M salary for 2019, but the Padres are responsible for $5.0M of it.
To put some numbers behind Carpenter’s 3B defense:
2018 DRS: +7, UZR/150: -1.8 (495 innings)
Career DRS: -1, UZR/150: -3.7
To put those numbers in perspective, here are Gyorko’s:
2018 DRS: +6, UZR/150: 4.1 (520 innings)
Career DRS: 21, UZR/150: 2.3
Adams1B/Carp 3B would not be my first choice. But I consider it an upgrade over Carp 1B/ Gyrko 3B. Certainly offensively, probably a push defensively. There are many other 1B/3B combos involving Carp (and/or possibly SS and Dejong) but I think Adams might be one of the ones that provides the most value.
