A very thorough analysis of first half results of former Cardinals now playing elsewhere.
The one that caught my eye was Stephen Piscotty having a better first half than Marcell Ozuna.

Trading Adams for a low level minor leaguer made no sense. One of Mo’s worst moves. Matt was just having trouble adjusting to the shift and the hitting instructors weren’t helping him.

Matt Adams was a free agent this past offseason and every single team had the option to sign him.

In the Piscotty vs Ozuna debate, I think we all know what they’re going for there. I like Stephen but he is what he is, a bit above average and not much more in the tank.

While we do know that Ozuna isn’t likely to put up last year’s numbers, a wRC+ in the 120s at minimum or mid 130s wasn’t too far out of the expected result. He just hasn’t performed yet. He’s hitting the ball hard, just not great luck. I suspect he will have better numbers by the end of the season.

As for the question raised by the writer of the KMOX article…I’d say that team wins 70ish games. The rotation is not inspiring at all, the offense is OK and the bullpen is pretty good.

Strange, Pads. In 2017 with the Braves, Matt had 19 HRs and 58 RBI in only 291 ABs. His OPS was .858.
Guess the Cards were happy with JM/MC combo and wanted more versatility in their bench players.

    Career wRC+:

    Martinez 133
    Carpenter 132
    Adams 115

The Cards made the right call on who to drop. I wouldn’t sleep on Yepez, either. He was tearing the cover off the ball at Peoria before his callup, and I wouldn’t expect him to struggle too much longer at Palm Beach either.

Thanks, 25. Does that factor in defense? I know the Cards assess a player based upon runs created and runs prevented.

No, that’s just hitting ability. We now know that Martinez is a poor defender, and Carpenter is around average.

I would also think that the Cards wanted some right handed pop and that would have factored in. There really was no one in the lineup at that time that looked good from the right side. Dejong wasn’t up yet, Pham was newly recalled, Ozuna was in Miami, Piscotty and Grichuk and Diaz were struggling, etc.

Matt Adams was given opportunities to become an everyday player here and he never could seize the job. I don’t blame the team for moving on. Sometimes a change of scenery helps.

It’s amazing how good that bullpen is. Neshek, Cishek, Duke, Oh, Ottavino, and Barraclough. Quite elite.

It’s sort of aggravating that Adams and Reynolds couldn’t put up 140+ OPS+’s when they were with the Cardinals.

The Cards had drafted right hand power hitters DeJong and Bader in 2015. They didn’t make a move for a LH bat this off season.
Just seems like they could have used Adams as a power LH bat off the bench in 2018. Seems like posters had brought it up in the winter. We probably still need a bat like that.

Having both Adams and JMart on the bench would have been difficult since Adams can only play one position and JMart can’t play any.

Probably a bad move also by Mo not to sign Oh. $1.75 million to see if he could rebound this season under Maddux. A lot better than bringing in unknowns like Gregerson.

I don’t think Adams is the kind of player this team needs. We have Carpenter for 1B who’s clearly a far superior player to him. Adams can’t play anywhere else so unless it’s as a pinch hitter, he’s just redundant.

Now, could we use a lefty in the outfield? I think so, just not sure who fits that mold.

Gregerson was drafted by the Cardinals and reached Double-A with them before being traded away, so I don’t think he was an unknown.

Oh looked like burnt toast at the end of last season. I did not go back and look, but I don’t recall anyone here expressing remorse that he was not retained.

Gregerson hadn’t been in the Cardinals organization since 2008. And never at the major league level. They hardly knew him at all in the winter of 2017/18. Oh was with the Cardinals in 2016 and 2017. The Cardinals knew Oh much better this past off season. He came very cheap. Again, they should have seen what he could do under Maddux.

We will just have to agree to disagree, bccran. MLB teams have extensive scouting reports on every player. Gregerson also pitched against them for years with San Diego.

There are some, myself included, who wondered if Oh’s heavy workload with the Cards at age 35 caught up with him. But he has pitched a lot for Toronto this year too – though not multiple innings. Perhaps he needed a change of scenery/leagues.

As far as that left-handed hitting outfielder, you mean not Adams? 😉

    Gregerson in 2017 – 4.57 ERA and 1.344 WHIP
Signed to a $5 million contract in 2018 and $5 million in 2019.

    Oh in 2017 – 4.10 ERA and 1.399 WHIP
Signed to a $1.75 million contract in 2018 with a team option at $2.5 million for 2019.

    Mo blew this one.

Adams played some in LF. Was he worse than Martinez in the RF?

Again, the point about Oh is that you had a new pitching coach, BW, which is like a change of scenery.

It is also fair to remember that Oh was a deposed closer, while Gregerson was signed to be the closer. Any closer will get paid more.

As we know, Gregerson got hurt and Norris stepped in. Then Holland was signed much later.

I wasn’t fired up about the Gregerson signing at the time, and he was a non-factor in the first half, but I still don’t wish Oh was back.

JMO, but I do not connect the two in any way.

Nothing against Maddux, but he sure hasn’t fixed Holland, Gregerson, or the other struggling relievers on the team now. No special reason to think he would work magic on Oh, who is 36 years old and has pitched for a looooong time.

Don’t forget that 2017 was Gregerson’s worst season, by far. He had quite a history of success for the 8 years prior to 2017.

They were pretty much equally bad, and Matt wasn’t hitting well. We brought up that guy Pham at the end of the experiment and he turned out alright last year, I think.
