The St. Louis Cardinals have activated catcher Carson Kelly and LHP Tyler Lyons off the 10-day disabled list, placed right-handed pitcher Greg Holland on the 10-day disabled list with a right hip impingement and optioned catcher Steven Baron to Memphis (AAA).
Kelly, 23, returns from the 10-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain. He made two rehab starts in Memphis catching Alex Reyes’ 13-strikeout game vs. Oklahoma City on Thursday before going 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored on Friday.
Lyons, 30, made two rehab appearances in Springfield (AA) earning a save in his first appearance on May 19 and allowed two runs in his second relief appearance on May 21. Lyons leads the Cardinals with seven Holds this season.
Holland, 32, has appeared in 18 games for the Cardinals this season with an 0-2 record and a 9.45 ERA in 13.1 innings.
Baron, 27, made one start for the Cardinals and recorded his first Major League hit against Philadelphia on May 19.
Brian Walton’s take
Not much to say here, as three of the four transactions were expected. The other, with Holland, is making the best of a bad situation. With a DL stint, the struggling former closer can work on the side, and when deemed ready, can ramp up in the minors without the stigma of having been optioned out.
Coming into the day, Memphis was at 24 players on its active roster, so did not have to make another move to accommodate the return of Baron. At least for the short term, the Triple-A club is carrying three catchers, with Jeremy Martinez and Andrew Knizner also on the roster.
