Well well well….the weekend of reckoning is almost upon us. Trust me when I say these 3 games vs the cubs are going to tell us what our club is made of. Not just from a talent perspective, but more importantly from a mental one. A statement will be made this weekend. If we sweep these guys, watch out! They could be a much more cohesive unit than what most of us think. If our Birds take 2-3, I think 2018 is going to be a fun ride. Lose 2-3, and it’s going to be a very long season. Get swept and we are 100% sellers as the trade deadline approaches.

Once again with the lefty…let’s see if they’re smart enough to start Bader over Fowler with his 1 for 22 start hitting RH. I can’t say that I’m optimistic they’ll make the right call.

I agree Pugs that this series is important mentally. The Cubs punked us last by winning 14 of 19. We need to send the message that we aren’t going to be pushed around anymore.

Stl25, I am watching to see if Gyroko finally gets in the lineup. He needs to play EVERYDAY, and let Carp and JMart platoon at 1B.

Gyorko is the kind of guy who can be overexposed and probably should be a 400-500 PA guy. But while he’s hot, I agree that he needs to be in the lineup. I’d prob let Carpenter work through his slump while platooning Fowler and Wong for a bit.

The lineup I’d like to see tonight:

    CF Pham
    RF Bader
    1B Martinez
    LF Ozuna
    3B Gyorko
    C Molina
    SS Dejong
    2B Carpenter
    P Mikolas

    What I expect:

    Pham
    Carpenter
    Martinez
    Ozuna
    Molina
    Fowler
    Dejong
    Wong
    Mikolas

By golly, it’s the first game of the series, so you’ve gotta play your opening day lineup /mathenaging. Then they’ll be shocked when a lineup “anchored” by three sub-Mendoza hitters scores one run off 3 hits in 7 innings off Quintana.

Fairly big early-season series, as the Cardinals need to show they can compete and beat the better teams. So far the club is 9-0 against the Reds and White Sox (1919 World Series opponents who 99 years later are looking for better days), while going 8-12 against good clubs.

I like sltcard25’s preferred lineup, other than second base where I would keep Wong in there for defense and speed, and then have Carpenter available for a potential big moment later in the game against a righty reliever.

But I agree, that Matheny will most likely go with the second group.

Gyroko may get overexposed on offense but he won’t get overexposed on defense at 3B. Having Carp and JMart on the field at the same time is a huge defensive liability. We aren’t scoring many runs anyway so let’s at least shore up the defense.

Gyorko in for Wong…but otherwise pretty much exactly as predicted.

Fowler somehow hits Quintana very well so I won’t rail on MM for not starting Bader vs a LHP. But, Fowler does need to prove he can be productive vs lefties going forward, and here’s a golden opportunity based on previous results.

Whats the over/under for the Cubs scoring in the 1st?

No score for the Cubs in the first, although it was a bit of an adventure.

Let’s see them get to Quintana early now…

That one was on Oquendo, as he waved Carpenter in with one out. The trailing runner could not move up, either. Great throw by Schwarber from LF, who is not known for defense.

I agree that it was on Oquendo…one of those plays. I guess Yadi struck out after so no gimmes.

Baez gave one a ride but it stayed in the park. 0-0 after an inning and a half.

Excellent play by Gyorko to rob the base hit from Bryant. Now let’s keep pushing Quintana, guys!!

Was I the only one who wondered if the pudgy Jedd of yesteryear would have caught that ball?

Now would be a great time for Dexter’s second hit as a righty on the year.

Lots of base runners for the Cards but only the blast by Pham to bolster the scoreboard. Hope Mikolas can keep cruising.

    good point Brian.

Miles pitch count very low after 3 IP.
