Meisner pitched at AA last year. Starter, though I wonder if a move to the bullpen might be in his future.

Why did the A’s trade for Lucas? Couldn’t they have just added him to the 40 man roster. Or maybe I answered my own question.

Big tall guy who seemed to lose his mechanics, but he may be a better prospect than Lucas. It would appear we dodged the we’re gonna lose three more good prospect bullet completely.

Did Valera get picked up? I am thinking he won’t but he might be able to opt for free agency since he has more than 7 years in the minors.

According to DG, the Cardinals are looking to trade Valera like Lucas, if possible.

The likely reason the A’s traded for Lucas is that they were worried that Lucas would not reach them in waiver priority, instead claimed by a worse team than them.

The Cards had seven days (from Wednesday) to decide Valera’s fate. We don’t know yet what it will be. Of course, every team would prefer to trade every player they are removing from the 40-man. Always better to get something rather than risk getting nothing. However, it takes one other organization willing to give.

Further, in the case of Valera, they no longer need him with both Munoz and Schrock added to the system as well as other, younger infield prospects at Memphis and Springfield.

Personally, I was far more confident in demand for Lucas than Valera. My guess is that Valera is not traded, hits the waiver wire, with a 50-50 chance he clears. Just a guess, though.

Darren Serferina is a better prospect than Valera. I like him a lot. I think he was world’s better than Alvarez. He plays third well also. With Shrock and Sefarina, Valera is getting passed and doesn’t offer much. Wong, Carpenter, Goryko, Munoz,Shrock, Sefarina, Caldwell,Young, etc… Valera needs to be dealt.

It appears that Lucas would have been lost anyway. What we get back is an AA RH starter. Meisner was OAK’s #27 prospect (MLB). His best stats are 22 y.o. 6’7″ 3rd rd. NYM in 2013. He will be 2nd youngest starter in SFPD (Woodford).

Casey will fit in as #5 starter at Springfield. Best case scenario, if he pitches well early on he’ll secure his rotation spot there. He will probably get a handful of starts to prove his case. (There are several starters at PB that will be looking to advance.) Worst case, he goes into the SPFD pen. With so many starters ahead of him his upside would figure to be the Memphis bullpen.

Where does the OAK #27 prospect fit into the Card’s list… just looking at his #s what are others thinking on this?

I underestimated Valera’s value. The Dodgers gave up a high-A OF for him in trade, Johan Mieses. More coming soon…

Mieses is another CF, but has batted .247 in five seasons in the LAD organization. Only 45 SBs in 5 years, so not the speedy sort. He might get some playing time at PB, but Pinder will play CF. Mieses appears to be an OF depth guy at that level, best case.

It looks like Valera brought back very little value despite being our #30 prospect (MLB). Mieses was not among the Dodgers top-30 (MLB) prospects. Some of the degrading remarks about Valera were annoying, so that comes to an end.

I like both deals as the Cardinals acquired a couple of 22 year old prospects not on 40 man for two guys who were older and seemingly blocked. At least there’s time to develop the 2 we got.

I couldn’t help but chuckle over this line from the Dodgers blog article.

“The acquisition of the young Venezuelan second baseman…”

Two out of three, at least. Valera is the same age as Carlos Martinez and Michael Wacha.

BW… I hope that this is your last Valera dis. It had gotten stale. Did you get into someone’s ear down at ST and put the Kabosh on Breyvic. Dodgers are glad to have him on their 40-man roster so its the Cards loss. The guy we got is bargain basement lifetime minor leaguer. I doubt very much that we’ll hear a negative word about this new OFer. 😉 😉

Given the options remaining on the table. Valera was clearly the right one to go and it is great the Cards got a much younger player with more runway in return. If down the road, Mieses fails to live up to his potential, we will acknowledge that, just as with any other player. I would imagine everyone hopes Valera succeeds elsewhere, but it isn’t always going to be happy talk here.

Valera looks to have landed in a place where he will get a shot… Lucas too

Good to see them moving forward
and we got good items in return… “with more runway” like Brian said

without the Schrock and Munoz for Piscotty deal i think Valera is still a Cardinal…maybe not in place of Bader at MLB level but still at AAA on the 40man

The reason Valera is not a Cardinal anymore is the reason you want guys to not be on the team anymore…he got outplayed

Now Lucas being gone…well one could argue that that is not the best reason…bad planning nad asset management IMO…

Norris was a fine get in theory..IF you arent going to get Holland….but if you end up getting Holland I dont see the point of Norris (another option for a vet closer to bridge the gap to someone stepping up)…and now we have a vet taking a kid spot… Lucas outplayed Norris (and everyone else too) by leaps and bounds this spring…and yet he is gone…not because he didnt play well, but because a vet with a history of decent success signed a contract which we didnt end up needing to offer for a guy who kind of doesnt fit the team anymore who isnt really pitching well

I agree – the Cardinals have a recent curious trend of signing marginal veteran relievers rather than promoting their AAA relievers. All the more curious since last year, Mozeliak said the Cardinals put themselves in a box by not having the AAA shuttle going due to having so many relievers who were eventually released (Broxton, Siegrist, etc).

Norris was outplayed by Lucas, and is only on a one year deal. When we signed Holland, Norris should have been the casualty. Now, next year when Norris and Holland leave in FA, we will have to go sign another middling reliever rather than used the cost-controlled Lucas.

I cannot argue with the Lucas assessment, but it also seems premature to give up on Norris. He had a very good year in 2017 as a reliever. They just got in a box over the 40-man. In hindsight, it is too bad they couldn’t have gotten a non-40-man player in trade instead of Conner Greene.

Remember that they will need to do something more to the 40-man when Reyes is ready. Two months would be a fairer evaluation period for Norris.

P.S. Perhaps the Cards would not have signed Norris had they been able to see the future and know that Holland’s demands would drop to the point they could sign him. But us second guessing that sequence of events is Monday morning quarterbacking. (Well, I guess it IS Monday!)

Meisner is already in our top 30 prospect list.
