From Jeff Passan:
Sources: Cardinals are among the teams in on Wade Davis. They’re prioritizing late-inning help to complement Luke Gregerson signing. Rockies are in on Davis as well as they hunt for a closer.
December 12, 2017 at 5:46 pm #39370Depends on price… Nothing wrong with kicking the tires and grabbing depth.
And making the cubs cry a bit doesnt hurt anybody’s feelings.
December 13, 2017 at 11:16 am #39451If we don’t land Colome we should be all over Davis. He is the best closer available. Colome may be cheaper but Davis is the best.
And yes, sticking it to the Cubs would be an added bonus.
December 13, 2017 at 11:30 am #39457Does it not bother anyone that despite their deep pockets, the Cubs aren’t pushing to get Davis back?
December 13, 2017 at 11:33 am #39460Good point Brian.maybe the Cards need to look another direction .Colome seems like the best option provided TB doesn`t want to hose the Cards .
December 13, 2017 at 12:14 pm #39470The Cubs haven’t said no to Davis yet. From what I understand they are still keeping tabs on him.

ParticipantI never really get that the team letting the FA goes has to go after them. We aren’t going after Lance Lynn, but it doesn’t mean we wouldn’t take him. Neither club wants to pay those guys. The Cubs are focused on high-end starters while we are focused on high-end relievers.
The Cubs did offer Davis the QO too. That’s a form of interest. I am worried about the long-term health of his arm.
December 13, 2017 at 12:58 pm #39479Greg Holland is returning to the Rockies so that narrows the closer list down a bit. Also saw Jim Bowden say Juan Nicasio close to a deal with Marlins (FWIW).That leaves Wade Davis,Steve Cishek,Brandon Kintzler as closers unless i forgot someone.Anthony Swarzak went to Mets 2 yrs 14 million total. He had been mentioned as a possible Cards bullpen setup guy.
December 13, 2017 at 1:57 pm #39492I’m hoping Colome is our closer next year. If not, then maybe Reyes. If Reyes is healthy, he’s got the mentality and the stuff to close. MO has already commented that Reyes will be in the BP to start the year. I still hope we get Colome, though, because I’d rather see Reyes as a number one starter eventually.
December 13, 2017 at 2:15 pm #39502I wouldn’t have a problem bringing Nicasio back. Would be cheaper than Davis which would allow us to get another starter or bat.
December 13, 2017 at 3:23 pm #39518PadsFS
ParticipantI don’t understand why they haven’t locked Nicasio in already. I’d rather have done that than get Gregerson.
December 13, 2017 at 3:27 pm #39520I don’t understand why they haven’t locked Nicasio in already. I’d rather have done that than get Gregerson.
I totally agree.
December 14, 2017 at 2:58 pm #39719I still think we are in the hunt for Davis. I would love to get him. At a minimum we should drive up the price because it is most likely going to be either us or the Cubs that sign him.
December 14, 2017 at 3:42 pm #39729I dont mind driving the price up for someone else, but i think i might be more interesting in trading for Colome than buying Davis.
December 14, 2017 at 5:12 pm #39741Colome would certainly be cheaper salary wise although I think Davis is one of the top 3 closers in the game. Colome probably ranks in the top 10.
December 29, 2017 at 10:51 am #40787Jeff Passan is first to report that Davis has come to terms on a deal with the Rockies.
December 29, 2017 at 10:59 am #40788More from Passan.
Source: Closer Wade Davis and the Colorado Rockies have agreed on a three-year, $52M deal. It’s the highest per-year salary ever for a reliever. The deal includes a fourth-year vesting option that could take the total to $66M. Full details at Yahoo Sports: yhoo.it/2CnGIO2
December 29, 2017 at 11:28 am #40790Dodged that bullet. Whew…
December 29, 2017 at 11:29 am #40792I would have loved to have gotten Davis. He is the best closer in MLB in my opinion, but not at that price. That is crazy money.
December 29, 2017 at 11:40 am #40796PadsFS
ParticipantWould any of you be ok with us giving that same deal to Holland? Maybe a team option on the 4th year rather than a vesting one?
December 29, 2017 at 11:44 am #40797WHy would they give that same deal to a lesser closer like Holland that would be utterly stupid
December 29, 2017 at 12:19 pm #40798No I would not be cool with that. Holland is not as good as Davis. I would offer Holland three years and $39M.
December 29, 2017 at 2:53 pm #40799Davis had forearm tightness in KC. He was ridden hard by Madden, and I was shocked he made it tbrough the year. All strains are tears, and I suspect a situstion similar to Reyes could develop where one day soon he id throwing 95 free and easy and the next thing you know, he is scheduling for Tommy John.
We will pay for future saves, and our FO knows just how many innings Holland’s repaired elbow has left and will offer a deal accordingly. We may be the dreaded bride’s maid, but we have at least four baby Rosenthals ready right now in Fui, Hudson, Hicks, and my choice…Reyes.
December 29, 2017 at 2:59 pm #40801That’s all well and dandy but we need someone to close in 2018. Relying on four guys who probably have never been in a 9th inning MLB game is not reassuring.
December 29, 2017 at 4:34 pm #40802NJ315
ParticipantDavis the best closer in the MLB? I think Mr. Jansen and Mr. Kimbrel would disagree with that opinion and their stats would back them up. Until the Cards decide to pay “crazy” money they won’t sign anybody of value.
