Yankees -160One team from each of these Wild Card match-ups(Phillies, Astros, cubs & Yanks)were on a majority of people’s preseason lists to win their division. My have the mighty have fallen as I’m predicting 3 of these 4 teams to lose. Even though the Phillies have been playing lousy baseball of late, I see them catching fire and taking down the Braves and then defeating the Dodgers in the next round. The NL championship series promises to be a dandy with the Brewers squaring off with the Phillies. At this point I’d flip a coin as to which one of these teams will be moving on to the World Series.

Obviously Yankees-Red Sox is the prime time series, but I really want to see the White Stockings continue their turn around and win a series or two (or three…).
Weird how MLB does the seedings as you would think both the Yanks and Red Sox are better than either Houston or the Chicago Americans. But if you are going to seed by power rankings then make the leagues each one big conference and have the top six make the post season.
In the NL, I would like to see the Pads and Braves advance. Really, anyone but the Cubs. But I will say our local SABR group has an inordinate amount of Cub fans and they are all great guys, so I am happy for them that they have a good team this year as most of ‘em are older dudes who have seen a lot of bad baseball.
I echo the anti-cub sentiments expressed by our esteemed posters. But no Cardinal Nation cub hate speech is complete without Scotty’s post. Hopefully Scotty will be weighing in soon here. In a previous thread, one of our posters so eloquently proclaimed his dislike of the cubs by writing that if the cubs were in the world series playing the Russian national team coached by none other than Vladimir Putin, he would be rooting like heck for the Russians to be claimed world series champions. In most circles hate is a terrible terrible thing. There’s even a rather large segment of our present society that thrives on hate…..mainly to self justify where they personally have gone wrong. This is bad. But in sports hate can be a wonderful thing. It spices up and adds an enormous amount of excitement to the competition. Frankly, if I didn’t hate the cubs, Bears, Vikings and Celtics so much, I as a sports fan would be pretty darn bored.
Pugs, I have never fashioned myself as a big fan of the Padres but for the next three days I will be robustly rooting for the guys in brown and yellow. A repeat of the 1984 NLCS would be fine with me. I keep imagining the ball going through the legs of Leon Durham.
I honestly don’t know if there will be a bigger fan of the San Diego Padres this week than our very own Scotty? My educated guess is that there won’t be. Yesterday I had the wifey order me a Padres cap and she said it would be here on Tuesday (tomorrow) just in time for the WC series. And speaking of the “wifey”, this coming Saturday, I’ll be dropping her, two girl friends and her cranky mother off at the airport at 6:30a for an American flight to Dallas and then on to Maui for 9 days. I’ve not only been counting the days, but also the hours for this joyous journey. I’m literally going to party like it’s 2099 commencing at about 6:45a on Saturday. She doesn’t drink and totally hates my best drinking buddy (Wild Turkey). Well, me and the Wild Turkey will be arm & arm around the clock for a solid 8 days. Nothing but post season baseball and mass quantities of Popeye’s apple cinnamon pies with Wild Turkey chasers on my agenda for many moons.
When it comes to baseball, I measure my level of hate against my Don Denkinger hate. The Cubs are close up until the Cardinals are eliminated, then it drops off. I’d like to see the White Sox win it though, just because.
Insofar as the Padres go, I’m guessing they could be a team that could stir up some genuine trouble and make a nice run in the playoffs over here on the NL side. They’ve been stacking up W’s for 7 or 8 weeks and went 18-6 in Sept. so, they seem to have found the right formula at an ideal time. Over in the AL I’m guessing the Red Sox could create some havoc and advance to some of the deeper rounds. They’ve been extremely streaky all season, so they could be trouble if they catch the right gear. In any case, in my estimation, the AL doesn’t contain a solitary team that I would term elite, so it ought to be a free for all with the AL pennant up for grabs.
It’s just not right that the Braves win the NLE by 6 games and now have to play a best of 3 against the 2nd place division rival Phillies in order stave off elimination.
I doubt the braves have any trouble with the phillies. They handled em pretty good when they played during the season. Ill be rooting for the yankees to win, cubs to lose, astros to lose, dont care about the rest.Though a brewers/ rays world series would be cool to see. I might actually watch that.
The Astros/White Sox AL WC series is another extreme travesty of justice, Willie. Back at the AS break I guessed that the Astros would win the ALW, but it’s just not right that the White Sox have to travel to play the entire series in HOU against an Astro team that qualified for bonus baseball with a .500 record. Life ain’t fair…
If ever there was an illustration of a stark contrast it would be between the #2 seeds in each league. The Indians claim the #2 seed in AL at 8 games over even while the Dodgers hold the #2 NL seed at 38 games over even. You really don’t have be all that good and required to win a lot of baseball games anymore to be presented with a chance at fun and prizes…
The Brewers must feel like Rodney Dangerfield. Despite closing out the ’26 season leading all teams with 103 W’s, Vito and his handicappers have set the odds with the Dodgers as overwhelming favorites to win the WS.
Until the Brewers show they can translate regular season success to the post season they won’t get the love.
The Guardians do seem like a weak #2 seed, but they played their best ball the latter part of the season and might be trouble for anyone. Right now it seems the three East teams are the best the AL has to offer, but I am hoping the Guards or White Sox make it interesting. And I won’t complain if the Rays grab the pennant.
The Brewers did make it to the NLCS last year. Thankfully they vanquished the Cubs but could not get past the Dodgers. They need to take the next step this year.
If the World Series is the Brewers vs Rays or Guardians Manfred will be beside himself, which is what I am hoping for.
I like the Brewers chances. The way they are approaching hitting seems entirely sustainable and repeatable in tense playoff situations.
Anyone but the Cubs. And hopefully not the Yankees or Dodgers.
I’m hoping for either Brewers or Braves in the NL and Rays, Red Sox, or Guardians from the AL. If I had my pick, I think I’d like to see Brewers vs Red Sox.
Think my top choice would be Brewers-White Sox, closely followed by the Guardians as the AL rep.
I would also like a Brewers-Braves NLCS. The Braves playing some games in Milwaukee going for a pennant is kind of a cool time warp deal.
With the HFA format in these best of 3 WC series, it would be difficult to wager against the home team, but we all saw what happened to the Cardinals in ’22. After consulting with my baseball expert gypsy and his trusty little crystal ball, I’m guessing that the Phillies, Padres, Astros and Red Sox will emerge victorious when the dust settles in these 4 WC series.
One of the announcers for the Braves and Phillies broadcast just commented that, historically, whoever won the first game of this three game series has won 15 of the last 16 game series’s.
Braves and Phillies currently tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 4th.
