7:15 p.m.
LHP Quinn Mathews (0-2, 6.43) vs. RHP Jared Jones (2-5, 4.76)
Cards.TV // KMOX // WIJRAugust 28, 2026 at 1:09 pm #317453Getting back to .500 is a worthy cause. Let us hope Ollie rolls out his win today lineup. Let us hope Quinn looks mighty.
August 28, 2026 at 2:14 pm #317456After the bullpen game is it thin out there for tonight’s game?
Matthews may do just fine or may go less than 3 innings.
August 28, 2026 at 2:17 pm #317457For one reason or another the 0-2 coupled with the 6.43 ERA doesn’t instill a lot of confidence.
August 28, 2026 at 3:45 pm #317458Check these stats out for Gassy’s last 9 appearances( 4 vs Philadelphia, 2 vs Cincy, 2 vs Baltimore & 1 vs the cubbies):
Innings – 10 2/3
Earned Runs – 1
Hits – 4
Strike outs – 20
Walks – 1What’s for Din-din tonight one may ask? I’ll follow Rat’s probable lead in feasting on some fabulous Fiddlers on this fine Friday. Joining these edible gems will be hush puppies, cole slaw and Hawaiian din-din rolls. Then on the way home, I’ll swing on by the drive-thru lane at Popeye’s to snag myself 3 scrumptious apple cinnamon pies.

C Jimmy Crooks LAugust 28, 2026 at 4:36 pm #317463Gassy has looked good. His delivery reminds me a bit of Jason Motte in the way he kind of “shot puts” the ball from his ear. A bit of a short-arm delivery.
Din-din here will be German fare, as we are hitting a local a brew pub after our gym work out for schnitzel and other such offerings and a pint or two from the German water wagon. 😁
August 28, 2026 at 5:32 pm #317464We’ve been encouraged not to expect much from this season and so far, armed with our rebuild excuse, that has been good advice, consequently we are left with what joy our top of the order can bring us while the rest struggle with Mr. Mendoza. If we should get lucky and finish at .500 this year, all can cry success!
Alas no catfish around here. Had to settle for a coupla trout.
August 28, 2026 at 6:14 pm #317465All clear weather wise for this one. At least according to the Doppler Radar.
And yes Pugs, today was a CCFF. Had some at the Amish restaurant out on the lake just north of town.
And on a good note……the Cubs had a 3-0 lead on the Reds today. And just like yesterday the Reds bats came alive and they walked out of the friendly confines with a 10-8 win over the Cubs.
And the Cubs and Brewers start a series on Monday night in Miller Park. This one will be a three game set in Milwaukee.
August 28, 2026 at 7:41 pm #317468Looks like the Quinnster is trying to grow a beard…….but it’s coming in a bit spotty. My frosh year in college I slapped on a fake mustache when going out on the town of Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, in an attempt to look older and thus dazzle the ladies. No score as the Birds bat in the bottom of the 2nd……oh and The Ferminator is granted new life as the catcher and 1st baseman let a routine popup fall in between themselves.
Birds don’t score.
August 28, 2026 at 7:48 pm #317469Bucs go down 1-2-3 in the 3rd and I don’t think this game has seen a hit yet. Matthews 1/3 of the way to tossing his first ML no-hitter…….stay tuned.
August 28, 2026 at 7:55 pm #317470Jones issuing a bit of chin music on his first pitch to Baez. Now this will be a good indicator as to what kind of a hitter Baez is going to be. If he puts solid wood on the ball in this at bat after nearly getting whacked, then that’s a good thing……….and he does as he lines out to center…….it’s an out, but an encouraging out.
Gorman with an extra base gapper for our first base runner.
Jimmy Lee Crooks hammers one deep to right and there’s no doubt about this one….long gone 2-0 Birds.
August 28, 2026 at 8:02 pm #317471Obviously, the lads have missed the inspired play by play. The Bucs might as well surrender now.
August 28, 2026 at 8:02 pm #317472Pirates looking a bit defensively challenged in the early going in this ballgame. Last inning the catcher and 1st baseman watch a lazy pop foul ball fall in between themselves untouched and this inning the SS boots a grounder hit right at him.
Cards get just the 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd
August 28, 2026 at 8:03 pm #317473Matthews looks far more comfortable tonight. It looks like he’s trying less hard to be perfect. I think those last 2 innings he had to pitch in his last outing where the pen was short and he was nearing 100 pitches helped him realize he can just pitch rather than be perfect.
August 28, 2026 at 8:16 pm #317475It’s interesting how we get a shot of Yadi in the dugout every 2 minutes.
August 28, 2026 at 8:16 pm #317476Triola atones for his defensive error…or “Das Boot” as the esteemed TD would say…..with a lead off line single to right, the Pirates first hit. But Matthews comes right back and sets down the next 2 Pirates before surrendering another base hit to right with Triola scampering around to 3rd. Soft line out to JJ to retire the side. ..2-0 Cards heading to the bottom of the 4th.
Matthews looking great……4 K’s and only the 2 hits…..pitch count a bit elevated at …..not sure….I think 65 give or take a pitch.
August 28, 2026 at 8:16 pm #317477
KeepComingBackParticipantAm I just nostalgic or is it a good thing seeing Yadi in the dugout?
August 28, 2026 at 8:23 pm #317478You’re totally nostalgic, KeepComingBack……like the rest of us around here. Looks like Yadi hasn’t missed many desserts lately as well…..I bet he could put away 5 Popeye’s apple cinnamon pies in the blink of an eye…..and Church with the sac fly to center scoring Walker….3-0 Good Guys. Now Baez blisters a line double to left. As we previously mentioned, Baez looks locked & loaded for going on a hitting rampage.
August 28, 2026 at 8:27 pm #317479Gorman made it on base to load them up. Happy to see that.
August 28, 2026 at 8:28 pm #317480Then Crooks couldn’t manage to put it in play with the sacks jammed and one out. I hate that.
August 28, 2026 at 8:34 pm #317481
KeepComingBackParticipantYea Pugs Yadi is definitely enjoying his retirement.
August 28, 2026 at 8:41 pm #317482Mathews did a good job stopping the bleeding in the 5th.
August 28, 2026 at 8:42 pm #317483Pirates pick up a run in the 5th. Matthews at 86 pitches…..just 1 more frame out of him should work. 3-1 Birds.
August 28, 2026 at 8:50 pm #317484Back-to-back 2 out singles by Walker and Fermin in the 5th will inspire a pitching change from the top step of the Pirates dugout. Sisk will enter as Jones exits.
