After Monday’s day off
6:45 p.m.
LHP Matthew Liberatore (5-11, 5.04) vs. RHP Chris Bassitt (4-4, 5.08)
Cards.TV // KMOX // WIJRAugust 25, 2026 at 7:33 am #317114Hopefully they left the habit of blowing late inning leagues in Philly.
August 25, 2026 at 9:42 am #317132The Cardinals are calling Nolan Gorman ahead of tonight’s series opener with the Orioles, a source says. Masyn Winn is expected to be placed on the IL as the corresponding move.

August 25, 2026 at 10:23 am #317134Oh Goody! We’re getting Nolan Gorman back.
Frankly, I like TBA’a chances tonight.
August 25, 2026 at 11:18 am #317137So, does Gorman play some 2B, given we are short a middle infielder?
August 25, 2026 at 11:22 am #317138I would suspect Gorman plays 3B tonight with Torres at 2B.
I really hope Gorman has made some changes that will help him. He should not have ever been as bad as he became. He’s better than that. On the plus side, this should improve the D at 3B.
Although I do want to note that Pages both has experience at 2B and an errorless streak there that extends throughput all his Minor and Major League experience. But, they may want to save him for late inning mound work again as he was our top performing pitcher in his last outing.

August 25, 2026 at 11:22 am #317139They could go a few different ways. They could go with a Gorman/Jordan combo at 3B while using Urias, Torres, and Fermin at 2B.
Or they might let Gorman and Jordan on the field at the same time, at 2B and 3B respectively.
I would prefer they keep Gorman at 3B and away from 2B. But who is the backup SS?
August 25, 2026 at 11:27 am #317143Fermin or Urías can both backup SS. Neither is all that good there, but both have experience.
I would expect Jordan and Gorman to rotate at 3B depending on pitcher handedness. I would expect the same with Urias and Torres at 2B. Fermin probably will mostly play in the OF with all the infielders around.

August 25, 2026 at 12:02 pm #317147In my opinion, Fermin should play the position he is the least bad at, which is 2B. At least he approaches average there. He is a below average defender everywhere else.
Winn can’t come back soon enough. JJ is a great defender at 2B. He can play shortstop, but he doesn’t have Winn’s arm.
I’d platoon Gorman and Urias at 3B. Jordan can play 1B against LHP. His offense in my opinion doesn’t warrant playing everyday.
None of it matters though, because Marmol is doing to do what he wants to do whether we like it or not. Many times I do not like it, but I don’t get to decide.
August 25, 2026 at 12:10 pm #317148Probably facing Christopher Michael Bassitt (aka “C-Bass”) tonight, who hauls down a cool 21MM per anum. Our young bats should be able to solve C-Bass’ offerings this evening. Let’s call it 7-3 Birds with Burly & Baez finding the cheap seats with bat in hand.
Din-din tonight will be breakfast for Din-din. Stepping up to the plate will be 3 medium poached eggs over 2 pieces of white toast, smothered in butter and salt & pepper. On deck will be all beef sausage links and baby red potatoes dipped into catsup. Then rounding 3rd and heading on home with be a huge piece of homemade coffee cake graced with extra brown sugar.
I vividly recall my excitement the first time Nolan Gorman was summoned to the bigs from Memphis. Unfortunately this recall today doesn’t move my emotional needle a smidgen.
August 25, 2026 at 12:14 pm #317149The last 2 1/2 months at Memphis, Gorman played zero games at 2B. Before that, in 62 games with StL, Gorman played zero games at 2B. That brings his 2026 grand total to zero games at 2B. My guess is that JJ stopped that experiment cold and I hope they don’t rekindle it now. That wouldn’t be fair to him or wise for the team.
August 25, 2026 at 12:19 pm #317150Let’s hope the Cards “hound” Bassitt! Moving on…

August 25, 2026 at 12:28 pm #317152Weather wise all looks fine at this point for tonight’s clash with the other birds. There is, however, a storm cell in central Kansas as I type this according to the Doppler Radar. But I don’t expect it to be a factor in the St. Louis area.
Then again, we are six hours from first pitch…….
August 25, 2026 at 1:13 pm #317153My guess is that JJ stopped that experiment cold and I hope they don’t rekindle it now.
I guess it depends on whether he comes back in a bench role and has to play himself into a regular spot or is just gifted it even though he made no progress fixing the problem he was sent down to fix.
August 25, 2026 at 3:06 pm #317156My point is that if he hasn’t played second for a year, he probably isn’t going to play there now. If the Cards had plans for him to be a utilityman, I would hope they would have prepared him for that in Memphis. But there, he was exclusively a third baseman and DH. That’s it.

Funny you should mention that. I have been delaying watching the new season because of baseball.

August 25, 2026 at 3:30 pm #317161Blaze has 3 option years left. He will be kept around and Gorman non-tendered first. I wouldn’t be surprised if in the off-season they are testing Herrera at 3B, already talk about getting Rainiel reps there to see if its an option. Jesus Baez probably doesn’t stick at SS and gets more time at 3B (where he started 7 A+ games and 5 AA games) Blaze kept around for depth at 3B and 1B and hopefully can get some pop back and be a viable option for back up 3B/1B some time at DH and be a RH power bench option.

cardsfan64ParticipantI thought Blaze was doing ok for a rookie. His ops is better than Gorman, Pages, Crooks, Urías, Scott and Saggese. Do I think we can do better at 3rd base, yes! But not sure why you are do down on him.
August 25, 2026 at 4:59 pm #317165Tyler O’Neill out tonight with shoulder soreness. Go figure.
August 25, 2026 at 5:06 pm #317166I thought Blaze was doing ok for a rookie.
I’ve been rooting for him, but the more I see, the more I think he could stand a solid year playing every day in AAA. Not sure that would happen though, with Raniel, Baez and others pushing up.
August 25, 2026 at 5:19 pm #317167Alright, the former Brownies return to the Midwest to play in front of the St. Louis fans. I hope we see a few “Paige”, “Sisler” and “”Wertz” Browns jerseys among the 15K or so faithful in the ball park.
Looking at those starter ERAs we could see some runs on the board. Gorman is back – how exciting….yawn…
August 25, 2026 at 5:23 pm #317168Regarding the Blazer, I don’t think this audition is a make or break situation for him. He’s only 23 – if he was 28 then yeah. But this was really a case where Gorman was so bad, let’s force feed Jordan and see how he does.
Like bling said, he could use more time in 3A.
