LHP Matthew Liberatore (5-8, 5.26)vs. RHP Kevin Gausman (4-10, 4.51)
Cards.TV // KMOXThursday update: LHP Quinn Mathews will make his MLB debut in place of Liberatore.
He is starting Saturday booyah. And I expect he mostly will keep taking turns in the rotation with May’s spot being open after the trade deadline.
No I meant Liberatore. That is his spot in the rotation. Are they giving him extra rest or will they move him to the pen?
Will be interested to see how Quinn adjusts to the big leagues. I would be happy to see him get an extended run (along with Dobbins) and give Libby some time in the bullpen to reset. He could still eat some innings if needed, but limit him to 70ish pitches. I think he could be a decent lefty pen option in the longer term, but he would need work to regain any sort of starter form.
My guess is that Libby stays in the rotation and Mathews takes May’s spot.
Or they could bring Dobbins back up for the rotation and put Libby in the pen.
Well hopefully matthews can keep doing what hes been doing. I wouldnt give up on libby yet but bullpen may be where he is headed. Trade deadline may sort that out.
They will be needing better rotation depth going forward. With all the starter prospect injuries the last few years they ended up with a ML rotation staffed by the survivors. The guys durable enough to stay on the mound. So they have had healthy rotations and only needed depth for spot starts. But they want to improve performance by moving in some injury history guys. This is likely to create an expanded role for the depth starters.

After getting hit alot with the Red Sox this year Wilson Contreras got buzzed up near the head last night at Doyer Stadium. He spun around and went down. Two pitches later he got beaned in the head. The Red Sox took him out of the game after the half inning was over.Nothing happened, no benches cleared, no retaliation.
Its scary when a guy gets hit in the head. I remember an incident many, many years ago, and I do not remember the players involved, but it would likely have been a Cardinal game. A player had been hit in the head and afterwards that player’s manager made a statement that was very critical of the pitcher. The pitcher responded to the effect if he (the opposing manager) will guarantee that none of his players will line one back through the box and hit me, then I will guarantee I will never hit a batter. Or we can just agree that the game has risks that we all face out there.
Have a wedding to attend shortly and hate missing Quinny’s maiden ML start. I came THIS close to sending my daughter in my place, but this one promises to have tons of beautiful fair maidens prancing about, so I’m opting to attend. Not sure what my din-din there will consist of, but I’m sure it’ll be a smorgasbord of goodies like Rat din-dins on at his two Amash eateries.
I’m calling this one 5-3 Cards with Matthews spinning 5 2/3 innings of 5 hit baseball and Walker getting off the proverbial post HRD (that’s “Home Run Derby” to the layman) schneid by launching a majestic 2 run dinger high up into the center field rafters.

Matthew’s gave up a hit but no runs in the first.
I really dislike the full wrap around ad graphic behind home plate. It keeps glitching out and distracts from being able to enjoy watching the game.
Quinns changeup was looking really good. It has a lot of movement on it
I like the way Mathews works up and down in the zone. The high heat is effective, at least with guys not used to it. Misses high a lot but that may be effective too, being eye level and 95.
Not as good of start to the 3rd walking Schneider and getting behind the next guy before getting a hard hit liner to Walker and a hard hit ball from Guerrero for a hit.
Yeah, he likes to do that BB. High heat up and then a lot of breaking stuff down. He’s just a bit off this inning, which tends to happen to him sometimes.
He seems a bit jumpy which I guess is understandable in a debut. Especially while debuting for a team that scores 2 runs a game.

Yeah that is what it looks like to me. A few pitches he looks like he is trying to do a little extra with. He needs to just trust his stuff and relax a little. He could be a little more aggressive and throw some strikes with 2 strikes rather than wasting a few. Not bad though as the stuff looks good and he has done a good job working up, down, and inside.
He has shook off Crooks a lot. You would think him and Crooks would be more on the same page since Crooks has caught him this year.
Well, Mathews pitching line doesn’t look too good so far. 3 IP, 1 R, 3H, 3 BB, 2 K, 71 pitches. Not sure what his pitch count ceiling is.
I like the potential, though. The control is a problem, but I guess we knew that. Its likely to be a bigger problem in MLB than it was in the minors if he can’t correct it. Its an exciting addition to the rotation.
