July 9, 2026 at 11:31 am #312402We really should win this one, if for no other reason than to slow our slippery slide toward sea level. I’ve been enjoying our creditable performance so far and while I entertain no hope of great things I’m rooting for a positive finish by this fun bunch.
For those interested in such things, the CiFs will be dining this evening on cornmeal pancakes and bacon with large doses of butter and maple syrup.
Rah Cardinals!
July 9, 2026 at 11:48 am #312404I don’t understand why this pitcher Henderson keeps bouncing up and down, this year and last. He seems perfectly capable of sticking. Are the Brewers that loaded?
July 9, 2026 at 12:04 pm #312405He’s been out with a back injury.
July 9, 2026 at 2:40 pm #312409For those interested in such things, the CiF’s will be din-dining it this evening on cornmeal pancakes and bacon with LARGE DOSES OF BUTTER AND MAPLE SYRUP.
I think only about 98% of us are interested, Cardinal in France. Mass quantities of butter and syrup are a must for french toast and pancakes. One of my ex-wives would use no butter and just a slight hint of syrup on her pancakes. I have no idea how she gulped those pancakes down the hatch? Furthermore, she used no butter with king crab legs or lobster, while I immerse them in melted butter for a good 30 seconds before eating them. She was also absolutely horrified with my common practice of dipping my prime rib into melted butter. The two of us were not exactly a match made in heaven. My din-din tonight will be 2 Oscar Meyer all beef bologna sandwiches with a slice of Kraft cheese in the middle….one with yellow mustard and the other with Duke’s mayo. I’ll gobble down some sweet Gerkin pickles and Ruffles potato chips dipped into sour cream. And for dessert a pint of Breyer’s vanilla bean ice cream with gobs of Jiff peanut butter.
This is a toughie to predict. I wouldn’t put money on this game even if I had a gun put to my head. So expect a very very close game…….something along the lines of 5-4 Birds.
July 9, 2026 at 3:20 pm #312411My din-din today almost got out of control.
I was about to grill a ribeye on the porch and squirted some gas on the coals so they would burn some more and get plenty hot. The gas shot back towards my little mustard bottle that I use to squirt gas on the coals. Next thing I knew I dropped it out of my hand and there were little bits of fire on the porch. And the mustard thing was burning about a foot high. I kicked it off the porch and then ran around the side of the house and turned the hose on. Disaster averted. Steak sure was good too..:)
And there are some scattered storms and rain in the St. Louis area as I type this. The guy on the Weather Channel said St. Louis and southern Illinois may very well see some storms tonight.
We will be lucky this one gets played tonight. I already consider myself lucky once today.

July 9, 2026 at 3:37 pm #312412Back in March I had strongly suspected that the ’26 rotation could quite possibly be bombed out of existence far prior to this point, but at a bit more than 90 games into the season it’s been entirely respectable, with 3 members of the 5 man featuring nice performances. In any event, the rotation’s been able to avoid the sort of collective failure that leads to an extended breakdown.
McGreevy 4-7 @ 3.01
Pallante 10-5 @ 3.60
Leahy 7-4 @ 3.86
May 5-6 @ 4.55
Liberatore 4-6 @ 5.34July 9, 2026 at 3:45 pm #312413A basic fire hazard safety rule…It’s always extremely dangerous to smoke in bed, but particularly so if it’s a waterbed filled with gasoline.

July 9, 2026 at 5:09 pm #312416LRLR top to bottom.
July 9, 2026 at 6:12 pm #312417Somebody else has probably flagged this, but Crooks has only 10 AB from June 25 onward. Pages has 16.
July 9, 2026 at 6:12 pm #312418You dealt with the emergency really well, Rat. Glad you didn’t quite panic even though it no doubt was a hair raising experience.
July 9, 2026 at 7:04 pm #312420It’s a shame anytime you can’t push a leadoff double across HP. Burleson and Walker both fail to put it into play and Herrera is now 2 for his last 19. The Cardinals need for the latter named player to start generating a lot more production.
July 9, 2026 at 7:14 pm #312421Maybe he doesn’t want to get traded
July 9, 2026 at 7:18 pm #312422This Brewers scoring in the top of the second started with Herrera allowing Pallante’s
outside pitch to get by him and that allowed the runner to advance.July 9, 2026 at 7:25 pm #312423The Cardinals are very good at making routine outs.
July 9, 2026 at 7:27 pm #312424The only thing worse than watching Herrera catch the ball is watching Herrera throw the ball.
July 9, 2026 at 7:51 pm #312426If you want some good news for the night, Mathews’ line is 7 ip, 2 h, 0 r, 2 bb, 7 K, 91 pitches. First time he’s gotten outs in the 7th this year.
Over his last 7 outings, he’s gone 39.1 ip, 16 h, 8 r, 8 er, 15 bb, 45 K. 1.83 ERA.
July 9, 2026 at 8:09 pm #312427Is Svanson available tonight?
July 9, 2026 at 8:31 pm #312428glad Henderson is out.
July 9, 2026 at 8:36 pm #312429And Walker just slammed a 3-run dong.
It’s 6-4 now.
July 9, 2026 at 8:37 pm #312430Walker is absolutely smashing the ball this month
July 9, 2026 at 10:24 pm #312437Herrera is slumping badly.
July 9, 2026 at 10:58 pm #312441Herrera is not good defensively, but they don’t want to have a dedicated DH, so we have to see him back there. If he can hit enough, and if we don’t have to be sound defensively at the up the middle positions, because we aren’t expecting to win, then fine, it works. Its not a path forward though. We need a catcher who is sound behind the plate, managing pitchers, and can hit enough to be in the lineup. So far, we come up empty with that. I have often said I refuse to hop on any catching prospect bandwagon, and its for good reason. They should probably try to move Herrera and not have to carry 3 catchers. We have other guys to cycle through DH.
July 9, 2026 at 11:22 pm #312442Oooof. The Brewers are really good; the Cardinals are really average.
I know the Cards are doing it differently this season but it all feels so familiar.
I still say the last really good team was 2015 before the All Star Break. That team faded badly down the stretch but still hung on to win 100 and the division but were stomped out of the playoffs by the Cubs.
The 2022 team was fun with Albert’s last ride and all that but it was never going to be sustainable or a season to build off of.
Maybe Chaim will have the answers and be able to build a great team that really contends for several years.
I guess we will find out in 2028.
