The Brew Crew continue to terrorize the Cubbies. Beat them again last night at Wrigley.

    1. Brewers 28-18
    2. Cards 28-19 (.5)
    3. Cubs 29-20 (.5)
    4. Reds 25-24 (4.5)
    5. Pirates 24-24 (5.0)

Pulling this comment over from a poster on VEB:

My favorite stat from this absolute bonkers season:

STL record when Ryne Stanek pitches: 19-4
STL record when Ryne Stanek gives up at least 2 baserunners: 10-1

We clearly know what we need to do to win! C’mon Stanek, let ’em on base! Those stats are so funny.

Will miss the early part of this one but should be home for the middle-to-late action. Working this afternoon’s Rockies-Rangers tilt from cool and damp Denver. We have been wicked in with overcast skies and off and on drizzle for a few days.

Man, that is some bizarre stat about winning despite Stanek being underwhelming. This club certainly does not fear trailing in a game. But they never seem to comfortably win either.

In the event anyone is keeping track of din-dins these days, chez les CiFs ce soir it was calves’ liver smothered in onions and cooked in butter, fried potatoes and Belgian endives. Dessert was fresh raspberries and the beverage was a couple glasses of Beaujolais.

I would like to sit back and enjoy a slugfest this evening, preferably with our birds doing the slugging.

    Rah Cardinals!

The weather appears as if it will cooperate in this one. Most of the wet stuff is now east of St. Louis. We are getting drenched here in SW Indiana. Tons and tons of rain. I am hoping I can get my yard mowed in the next 2-3 days. Over the years we’ve always wanted the yard mowed for the Indianapolis 500 weekend.

And this would not be the time to go into a slump. After the Pirates we have the Reds and Brewers, both on the road. Then the Cubs at Busch. Hopefully we can play .500 ball over the next ten days or so.

Din-din today is the weekly trip to the Gasthof, the Amish restaurant down in Montgomery. Late lunch today will be fried chicken, mashed potatoes/gravy, noodles, green beans, dressing, hopefully sweet potatoes, sweet iced tea, cherry cobbler, and some soft serve vanilla ice cream. Then afterwards a 7×50 Palma Real Presidente cigar out on the porch area. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for that.

The team’s 19-4 W/L record when Stanek works is interesting. I can only guess that quite a few of his appearances have been during games in which the score wasn’t resting on a knife’s edge when he was summoned from the BP. I also happened to notice that he recorded the first SV this season from a Redbird pitcher on opening day. The Cardinal W/L record when the Bogsider from Derry works is 21-2, but his ERA is less than half that of Stanek’s and he’s only allowed 3 BB’s all season which, in my estimation, is his longsuit. Stanek’s been really charitable with 17 BB’s on the season in 20 IP’ed. In any case, I’d have never guessed the team W/L numbers attached to Stanek.

I got curious. We are 19-4 in games in which Romero has appeared. (I wonder how many games have only had one or the other of Romero and Stanek.) We are 7-3 when he gives up at least two hits+walks.

We are 15-7 when Soriano appears, 15-4 since April 3. We’re 6-2 when he give up at least two hits+walks, and 6-1 wince April 3.

Screwball.com reports that we have blown saves in 8 games this year, but we’ve come back to win 4 of them anyway. So if we use these guys (almost) only when we are ahead, we’re going to have overwhelmingly winning records. Stanek just lives more dangerously (11 games with two runners) than Romero (10), Soriano (8), or O’Brien (5). And perhaps has been put in slightly more spots where a couple baserunners won’t matter.

Dinner tonight will be a baked chicken breast, rice with dill and parmesan, some green beans, and a scone for dessert.

Sweet back-to-back-to-back-to-back posts by BicycleMike. Having won last night’s Game Thread Din-Din of The Day honors, all anxiously await to see if BicycleMike can become The Cardinal Nation’s first back-to-back Din-Din of The Day winner. Rat’s Wednesday Amish restaurant din-din is always a tough act to beat.

Watching some replays from yesterday I saw the tarps off group in RF instead of left. Hmmm. Or were there some on both sides? I’m confused. It was kind of a skinny crowd maybe dampened down by the damp weather. Its been dry here this afternoon, but overcast and rather dreary. Might be a bit cool later on. Hope the boys whip up some more tater salad.

Milwaukee is only a 7 hour drive, so maybe The Herd will all be traveling to Milwaukee to rattle the opposition and root the men in red on to victory. So the Brewers crowd won’t be thinking the rowdy young men are rooting for their team, all will have to be wearing Cardinal caps. Who knows, with a little luck one of these fine young men may end up gaining favor with one, Front Row Amy.

Yeah, Bling, sometimes the camera angle makes it hard to determine exactly where those tarps off kids are situated. I initially thought the RF bleachers area was where they were headquartered, but they seem to have evolved into a roving band of rowdy baseball gypsies who practice their brand of wild and outlandish fanaticism all over the ballpark. That’s okay by me…It’s good to have the sort of exceptional range that covers all areas of the field…

If the pirates were the only team the cardinals had to play in regular season, we would be in playoffs every year.

I’m pretty sure that many can recall a time or two when the Pittsburgh, Pirates routinely thrashed the Cardinals to the extent that it could be termed as abuse.

Love those “tarps off” juvies. They definitely add a lot of enthusiasm to the contest, and last night’s walk-off was perfect drama for them.

Looks like jambalaya tonight, made by the Lovely Lady Bike with anjoulle (sp?) sausage. We will add a warm crescent roll to that with butter, some green beans, and little more of that fresh watermelon for dessert. Yours truly is going to wash it down with a cold, frosty one from a local brew pub – their Pilsner.

To be honest 1tough, i dont recall it. Even when the pirates were always in playoffs, i never felt we couldnt beat them even with inferior teams. It must really infuriate pirates long time fans. They have been rebuilding for almost 30 years, us maybe 1 or 2 depending on how you look at it. Yet here we are with a better record and we tend to dominate their best pitcher and we still tend to whip up on them.

I happened to notice that Cap Anson, who amassed 3435 hits, never played in over 86 games for the first 12 seasons of his career. I’m guessing that ballpalyers experienced a lot of travel and hotel issues back in those days that prevented them from playing on any given day. You know, hostile Indians, train robberies and highwaymen who routinely ambushed the chartered stage coach on the way to the ballpark…

I have vivid recollections of both the old NLE teams from PA routinely trouncing the Cardinals through the better part of the 70’s, Willie. And, in my estimation, the Pirates were the most abusive. That’s the primary reason I’ll never harbor any sympathy for those mean old Bucs. If you got past Clemente and Stargell, here comes, Parker, Oliver and Madlock. The Pirates were no bargain during the early to mid 90’s either. In any case, every time the Redbirds and Pujols traveled to Pittsburgh, I was able to avenge my many years of suffering…Haha!

It’s more than a little bit of relief to see Winn back in there and manned up at SS. He flashed the nice mitt for the 2nd out.

McGreevey’s taking his 10th turn of the season in the rotation this evening and for some reason I feel like tonight’s pitching performance from the young RH’er will give a clear indication as to whether or not he can maintain some genuine consistency in regards to maintaining the sort of nice work on the mound that he’s displayed thus far in ’26.
