I was looking on the MiLB app last night before bed to see how the minors teams were doing (after following the big league team as they finished up their extra innings win) and it was pleasing to peruse the box scores/gamecast results. Last night looks like what we would hope the farm could produce…winners who also happen to have enough talent to tantalize the prospect gurus. With the influx of guys we expect from the draft this summer, it is a good time to be a Cardinals prospect watcher.

A little concern…Lin still can’t seem to find the plate in Springfield. Hopefully it’s just early season jitters and he’ll find a touch more command as he settles in. I’m a fan of Wei-no and hope we have another tall presence on the mound at Busch in years to come with the Taiwanese giant.

I was worried overall about our position player prospect depth and upside. But the addition and development of Jesus Baez, Blaze Jordan, Tai Peete and to a lesser extent Colton Ledbetter are really filling our holes nicely. Combine that with the big leaps in development by Josh Baez, Cade McGee, and Raniel Rodriguez along with some exciting new DSL players who have come stateside and I’m suddenly feeling like a deficiency may be turning into a strength. There’s a lot to get excited about right now in the Cardinal Nation (and at The Cardinal Nation as well!).

When Dobbins has been built up, would Fitts or Dobbins be called up 1st?

I’d assume the SP call up order is:
    1A/1B : Fitts and Dobbins
    3: Mathews
    4: Mautz

    Fitts/Dobbins = $1.6M
    Mikolas/Feddee = $26+M

First option is better and cheaper, now win the draft please Bloom!

It’s nice to have options. Fitts and Dobbins seem more read though. Mathews has bouts of control issues.

If Mautz does well, he could be in front of Matthews simply because he has a 40-man spot already. I think right now it’s hard to guess. Performance over the next month likely dictates the order.

Mautz and Mathew’s have control issues. Fitts and Dobbins both have shown strikeout throwing capabilities.

Quinn Mathews had a solid start going, only to completely fall apart in the third inning. A walk, a single, a HBP and two HRs in just one third of an inning. He was replaced by Tink Hence who allowed a sixth earned run to score.

He’s sliding way down my prospect rankings, sadly. Another guy whose health gave out and will be lucky to be a MLB reliever, it looks like.

    Crap Crap crap.

Packy Naughton left the Memphis game holding his pitching elbow after throwing a pitch. At one point he was double over. The whole thing didn’t look good. Kyle tweeted a video of it.

Doyle got rocked in AA. He should’ve started in Peoria with Rodriguez. Earn his way to AAA not given it.

After a really positive day, yesterday was UGLY on the farm. Some of that was against our worst bullpen pitchers that were in the game because we were already losing badly. But a lot wasn’t. Doyle was great until everything went to pieces. Matthews was great until everything went to pieces. Packy got hurt and may be out a long time or be done entirely. And our offense looked sluggish across the board. Not a good day at all.

Mathews and Doyle were both pushed up aggressively, facing upper level hitters before having a chance to learn anything of the art facing pro hitters. At some point a pitcher can no longer throw it past everyone however hard they try. I think coming up as a pitcher the answer has always been ad a tick until finally it is one tick too much.

Mathews is 25 and should be at least facing AAA hitters. He had dominated lower levels and it wouldn’t have been productive to keep him there. He has hit a road block either health wise or command wise and best for him to do that in AAA. Fingers crossed he does as I think he is healthy and just needs to regain his command.

Doyle I do think they were too aggressive with although it was a single start so the results arent indicative of any problems. He went from college hitters to AA essentially and I assume he will have to make some adjustments to get them out. Hopefully they have him working on his off speed stuff. I would have let him do that in A+ instead.

At least for good news Van Dyke pitched very well for Palm Beach. I want to see him do it a few more times and then if he does if he can do it against more advanced hitters than A+.

I was surprised to see Sparks get the start for Peoria. I was expecting Dohm but maybe they have him working on things in practice and will get him game action soon.

Tanner Franklin having a nice start for Peoria tonight. Not very efficient at 60 pitches (which isn’t unexpected) but he’s filling the zone, mostly. He has 7 Ks in his three IP.

The Yankees DFA’d Winquest. Possibly coming back. Right now we need some healthy pitchers.

Winquest coming back would be nice. I would probably target him to the pen in AAA and see if can develop as a solid RP. Be got 2 weeks of big league pay but he still hasn’t made his official big league debut.

Franklin with another great game. He does need to be more efficient but batters don’t seem to be able to get what he is throwing at all. I imagine they have him on a fairly strict innings limit this year with him having been an RP in college so in guessing 3 or 4 innings is as long as he goes for a while.

Cjintje did not have a good start though but ups and downs happen.

Rainiel had a good day as well. They walked him the first 3 times up and he made them pay the next time with a HR.

There will be good and bad days for our prospects. Tuesday 4-0, Wednesday 1-3, and Thursday 3-1, with Springfield blowing a lead on the only loss.

It’s nice to see we had 3 consecutive days, with 4 very good starts by our prospects. Dobbins on Tuesday, Van Dyke on Wednesday, Fitts and Franklin on Thursday.
In fact, I’m curious if Franklin and Van Dyke wouldn’t move up a level if they keep up pitching like they have.

Gurevitch started off slow but he has been playing much better lately. Odle pitched very well as the piggyback off Hansen.
