Unfortunate, but not unexpected. You can’t trust a pitching prospect until they are safely tucked away on another team following their 6 years of MLB control.
Really odd, my computer had me logged out, but I just realized I can’t see any threads started by gscottar if I’m logged out.
Anyway, terrible news about Roby. He was really showing promise this year. With the surgery so late, it’ll be 2027 before we will see him again.
If the surgery is successful, as expected, we should have him ready for the 2027 season, even if the 2027 season starts late because of negotiations for a new CBA.
But ready for what? To start over in Triple-A? 2027 will be his third option year and he’s not close to being ready for the majors yet. Tick, tick, tick…
I think he would be able to start pitching again in September next year and maybe pitch some in the AFL.
Ready to go by spring training of 2027 as a dark horse candidate for the ML bullpen or start the year in AAA if they want him to start. He could’ve made the ML bullpen this year if he wasn’t hurt.
A talent like him should be on the Tommy Pham plan at the least.
Having so many injured minor league pitchers on the 40 man could put a strain on adding players this offseason. Roby, Robberse, Thompson, and Hence will need to either be protected on the 40 man this winter or be exposed to other clubs since they can’t hide on the 60 day IL until opening day. Of course the team will probably be shedding some 40 man guys later this week but we don’t know how many 40 man players they will get in return.
There are plenty of other 40 man players they could shed this winter (Fernandez, King, Munoz, Roycroft, Pozo, Baker, Hampson, Koperniak, etc….) but still we can’t afford to have too many more players come up with long term injuries.
I think about have of players we need to make decisions on will be exposed.
I also think half of the guys who are on the 40 man currently will be let go as well at seasons end maybe 1-2 at the deadline to make room for additions and maybe someone to be added in Sept.
Robberse seems like an easy DFA candidate to me. Thompson should be an easy DFA as well.
Roby I expect to stay as it would be quite easy for another team by rule 5 him. They can take him and then leave him on their 60 day IL all year to then see in the 2027 offseason if he is ready to be on the MLB roster all year. Hjerpe is likely in the same situation with them both being out all next year. I’m guessing we will hear Hence need TJ surgery soon as well since he has been out a lot and will also be gone until 2027.

When he gets back I think Roby would be ready for an MLB bullpen at the start of 2027 after some rehab and maybe a month or 2 in the minors bullpen. You can move him up past AAA or quickly through if in the pen. At his point I think both Hence and Roby just need to be moved to the pen. Neither will ever be able to pitch 160 inning seasons. Both would have their stuff play up in the pen and you could focus on 60 innings from them out of the pen.
FWIW – Roby is only 23 years old. He turns 24 on Sept. 18. When he’s ready to pitch in 2027, he’ll be 25 years old and, probably, fully healed.
Agree that Roby and Hence will provide any value they can out of the pen, if anything. Shoulder injuries are a death knell for a long and successful career in today’s game.
This leaves Memphis with a rotation of Mathews-Rajcic-CTaylor-Wilkersson-Plesac. Only Mathews was part of the Opening Day starters. Bedell is rehabbing at Low-A Palm Beach and he pitched well on Sunday.
It looks like a 3-way race for Pitcher of the Month….. Hansen-Mautz and BDavis. I think it goes to Davis.
The AA Springfield rotation has been formidable all season. Hansen, Mautz and Henderson have been there for every one of their rotation spots. Rincon replaced Roby when he was promoted and Winquist has replaced the recently promoted Rajcic.

The report I saw suggested Roby may not be pitching in games until the start of 2027. Then he learns how to be a reliever in the minors pen and shakes off the TJS rust. Assuming they can do that in Memphis and not at lower levels, maybe is he ready for StL a third into or halfway through the season. And if it is his last option year, he will have to figure it out pretty quickly, as his time on the I55 shuttle would be short. He will turn 26 late in the 2027 season.
And this assumes his earlier shoulder problems and other setbacks do not occur.
Any suggestion that Roby will come back and be more resilient than he has been is absurd. The most likely thing is he won’t be able to stay on the mound enough to get anywhere and then he will be gone.
I sure hope Roby comes back healthy. He was just beginning to fulfill his promise when he got hurt.
1) will Roby be down to 1 option left next year?
2) will he play in the afl?
3) what is the program for post Tommy John players? It’s been a year now.
