Taking a gander at the meterological conditions for this one finds that, according to the Doppler Radar, there is no rain in sight in or around the greater metropolitan St. Louis area as of four hours before first pitch.
However, it is quite hot in the St. Louis area. And with the high humidity that lends itself to potential “pop up” thunderstorms. At least that’s what we call them here in Indiana. We have had two of those the last two nights.
And din-din today was a Subway Italian BMT sandwich, some baked beans, an ice cold slushy Mt. Dew, and a chocolate shake for dessert.

Alcantara has struggled in his return from TJ surgery. However, it just seems like he will shut us down tonight. 7 innings, three hits, no runs as the ‘Lins grab a 3-0 win. Rats will be lamenting our lack of offense, and Bob Reed will provide an in-depth look at why we are struggling based on advanced metrics. Meanwhile Pugs will be in line at Popeyes for not one, not two but three cinnamon pies.
The line for his last turn looks real good with 0 ER’s on 4 hits in 7 IP’ed against the Padres, but his prior 4 turns in the rotation say 22 ER’s in 23 innings of work…That’s a protracted sort of beating that could be termed savage.
Tonight could very well be Alcantara’s last start with the Marlins. Someone will take a chance on him. Hey if Fedde can be traded….
You see a lot, BicycleMike. At this stage it pretty much should go without saying that we are sellers. Heck, I urge any of you to do what I just did and look up the word “sellers” in any Webster unabridged dictionary……and you’ll see it’s definition as “2025 St. Louis Cardinals baseball team the week leading up to the July 31st,2025, 5pm(cst) trading deadline”. But with this being said, why not get Sandy back where he belongs……in a Cards uniform? He’s bound to be relatively cheap and when he works out the kinks from his surgery, watch out because he’s going to once again take on the look of a true-blue Ace. And speaking of “blue”, I pray to God that the cubbies don’t get him. They can have Keller or Gore, but not Sandy.

With the possible exception of the field boxes directly behind HP and surrounding the home team dugout, Busch Stadium looks like a real lonely ballpark. Last night’s box claimed about 20K which is obviously not nearly as desolate as the genuine gate count. In any event, these scant turnouts may be for the best in the sense that they have a chance at prodding Willie Jr. to either field a better product or offer his prized franchise up to the highest bidder, which is what his spawn will do anyway immediately after Willie Jr. says so long and moves on to the baseball team ownership fraternity in the sky.
Yeah, the Cardinal brand has really taken a hit. It seems no one has come along to generate the interest that Wainwright and Molina had. And bringing Albert the Great back in 2022 was a fortuitous decision.
I think if we could get a guy to really step up and become a star, something along the lines of what Pete Crow-Armstrong is doing in Chicago, the fans would come back and we would see the 35-40K crowds again.
Winn seems like the closest we have to creating that buzz. Perhaps Herrera can do that as well, and down the road a little perhaps Wetherholt. We need one or two of those, and then of course they need to be part of a winning club.
We talk a lot about Walker and Gorman, and rightly so as there are still fairly high expectations for those guys, or at least some hope they can get into a groove. But one guy kind of under the radar who seems to have lost it as well is Pedro Pages. He was not thought of as a big offensive guy, but he at least held his own. He is really down right now, well below the Mendoza line. I don’t know how long we can run him out there, as his defense is not so overwhelming that you can put up with an automatic out.
After being thoroughly run thru the ringer to the tune of 22 ER’s in 23 IP’ed, Alcantara has now featured 12 consecutive scoreless innings of work in his last 2 turns. All those contenders are undoubtedly salivating at the potential possibilities. Then again, let the buyer always beware…Haha!
Ha 1TD. I bet Alcantara in all seriousness has a bidding war on him going on. His stuff is really good and teams will be betting he can improve results wise as he shakes off the rust.
King had to leave the game in the ninth with an apparent injury. Probably means he won’t be traded. BTW – Cards down 5-0 with 3 outs left.
Shut out for 11th time this season. Given 109 games that translates to 10 percent of our games we have failed to score.

Oh yeah, they’re all on the brink of hysteria, KCB. And after seeing his last two pieces of work, I’d imagine they all reacted like an audience of teenage girls watching Elvis work his mid section…Haha!
Yeah, Rat most has without question proclaimed for quite some time that this team can’t hit. But that’s only a small part of the problem…This team can’t score!
In past years, this is about the time and situation where Mo might brilliantly fire some assistance coach.

This team could win 90 games with 175 homers and be top 5 in runs scored and he’d still find a way to complain about the .245 team average.
The Brewers and Cardinals are both batting .251, so why aren’t we contenders for the division? Is it our BA holding us back? God forbid anyone who tries to slug, the backlash gets even worse.

He may go down as one of the worst starting catchers we’ve ever had. Molina in ’06 and ’22 at least had good-to-elite defense to go with his batting lines. Marrero and Pagnozzi and company in the late 90s were pretty awful too.
I think Pages being the main catcher happened more by accident than anything else. Herrera just didn’t quite work out due to his defense and injuries.
