After Thursday’s day off…

Pallante has looked solid so far.
Contreras needs to start hitting and the Cards need to start winning their share of close games.
I hope they figure things out.
The offense has been pretty good – six runs per game. But we need to shore up the pitching.
However, good point on Contreras as while he is struggling like this you can’t keep him at 2. He needs to move down in the order and you might go Scott, Donovan and Noot in the top three slots versus a righty.
I would give Baker a couple of starts and let him get 8 or 9 ABs in a couple of days and see if he can square up a few.
Now we get to watch them play a first division NL team. They’ll have a chance to show Stl. fans whether or not they’re capable of simply competing and keeping pace against a good team in their home ballpark. We’ll see what happens.
The Cubs go to LA to face the Dodgers this weekend. Then they go to San Diego for three. Here’s a chance to gain some ground on them over the next few days. Will be tough going though with us having to face the Phillies and the Astros.
Cubbies have less than zero chance against the Dodgers now that Little Eddie is the undisputed leader of that powerhouse organization.
Maybe off topic and maybe not, but do rules that outlaw hard-nosed and hair raising plays such as the bang-bang, all out, full throttle, score at any cost, collision at HP, or the barrel into 2B in a tough and determined, take no prisoners attempt to break up the GIDP in order to try to win a game once known as hardball seem like maybe these new rules were designed to be implemented as rules for a game played by 4th grade school girls? When did butterflies, lollipops, rainbows and daisies take the place of dust, dirt, spikes and spit in the game of baseball? And don’t even get me started on the make believe, fairy tale baserunner in extras…Baseball has always been a mirror image of America. Are we really that fragile and delicate?
Pitchers haven’t had a bat swang at them in awhile, of course, back then we didn’t wear seat belts either.
Sports have been protecting their stars with new rules to help protect them from injury, especially the NFL. We have the Posey rule, etc.

Phillies lost in 12 innings at Atlanta last night. Marcell Ozuna jacked a long dong in the last of the 12th for the 4-2 win. Maybe we can catch the Phillies at just the right time.

On the collisions, as was brought up I think the major injury to Buster Posey really did a lot to change the game.
I can see both sides of the change. We admire tough, gritty plays and players. Then again when the risk is fairly high of a major injury, and especially concussions which can be life altering, I can see why the powers that be try to tone it down. Football has done the same thing with the targeting rules and other measures. We don’t want another Daryl Stingley type injury.
I’m all for bubble wrap uniforms, but they’d probably pose a breathing or skin hazard…No one wants to see anyone get hurt, but the only way to eliminate injuries in sports is to eliminate sports.
The primary reason I was compelled to mention all of the rule changes has to do with a photograph that I happened to see on a web-site devoted to images taken from bygone eras of Big League baseball. The aforementioned photo is of Roberto Clemente coming in hard at 2B with nothing other than serious business on his mind during an all out attempt to take out SS Davey Concepcion and eliminate the possibility of completing a GIDP. The expressions on both players faces are clearly visible in the image and perfectly illustrate what the great Pirate RF’er has on his mind…which is to annihilate Concepcion…The photo contains nothing other than spikes, sparks, dust, dirt, grit and intense action as the two legendary players are both entirely airborne and at war with one another, and could be described as a frame taken from genuine battle footage. It’s the sort of baseball action that fascinated me as a youngster and gave rise to a lifetime as an ardent fan. It’s from a bygone era when Big League baseball players played the game for keeps.
The full speed contact has been watered down intentionally, whether it’s Pete Rose going into home, or the NFL eliminating full speed kickoffs.
Our awareness to concussions now reminds me of society adopting seatbelts as a law. We’ve grown to understand better.

I’ve never watched any UFC action, but someone told me the UFC was nothing more than a watered down cupcake version of Hagler/Hearns…
This will be a tough series. The Phillies are the clear 2nd best team in baseball in my view. Their rotation is full of #3’s at worst. They have 3 different pitchers that have been on Cy Young ballots. Their 4th best pitcher is Luzardo who was a steal of a deal as they realized he has ace upside. Ranger Suarez is their worst pitcher and most teams he is an easy #3 and many #2.
To make things more fun on their pitching side, they have the #1 pitching prospect who looks to be an ace when he gets healthy. Bling may have a heart attack knowing Painter is widely regarded as #1 or #2 in pitching prospects and he hasn’t pitched in a game since 2022. Reports are he looks very sharp while in the recovery phase.
Remember when independent local station KPLR channel 11 used to broadcast almost all of the Cardinal games that were televised for several seasons? Times sure have changed.
Yeah, we’ll get to see if they have the ability to compete with a first rate baseball team, Albert. The Cardinals should be amped up for these three games. Obviously, they’d like to avoid the embarrassment of being entirely outclassed on their home playing field in front of the folks that make it possible for them to earn a living. I wonder if Johnny will be perched up high in his lofty skybox? We’ll know a lot more about this year’s Redbird edition at the close of this weekend.
For those that don’t know, KPLR channel 11 is a local unaffiliated TV station that made it’s bones televising the sort of progamming that included stuff like The Three Stooges and old Gilligan’s Island and Hogan’s Heroes reruns….For several seasons during the late 80’s to mid 90’s, they were the primary number one source of televised Cardinal games…Haha!

Are there any new rules or regulations for tonight’s game? You know, imaginary baserunners or golden AB’s. Clever stuff like that to relegate the game to the state of something foreign and unrecognizable to the ordinary baseball fan. Something to speed it up and attract the attention of the in crowd. Everybody loves a gimmick…
